- Characters: Paenitia, Aryia, Lillianath
- Place: A05: Warehouse District

- Summary: The adventurers attempt to bluff their way inside the warehouse. They are initially rebuffed, then allowed to enter. Ramirez, Paenitia's peacock-andalusian, reacts badly when the warehouse worker tries to close the door and lock them in. Battle ensues, Ramirez taking out an orc and menacing crossbowmen. Aryia spots the documents they are after in a boat, and grabs them. Lillianath injures a goblin and gets him to surrender. Paenitia gets a weapon too large for herself and clanks slowly to a relevant position in combat. Another thug and his dog arrive. The battle will continue...

The Tornwawr River cuts along the edge of this section, it's broad expanse creating the district's eastern border, making the river's west banks a series of small docks for the warehouses that crowd up to it. Ships and barges dot the river surface, making deliveries and putting in for repairs. No few bear a nod to Rada, their proud sails bearing Rada's symbol, or three, for luck's sake. They also fly the colours of many nations and city-states, all sending their trade to Alexandria.
After the row of warehouses, the district's street's house small offices dotted with the names of shipping companies and various industries. Tucked in between is the occasional sailor's tavern. Beyond that, simple townhouses in tight rows provide homes for the area's workers. The area is bustling, especially with some working the night shifts, but the rowdiness is low. There's hard work to be done, and that requires a good night's, or good day's, sleep and the warehousing is loud enough without any roughhousing, thank you kindly.
South, the Great Sea wall and the Port of Alexandria are visible.

Having received a tip off from one of Alexandria's beggars, the party have made their way to the warehouse district. Here, they have found the indicated warehouse, and thus far have been staking the place out. It is on an artificial waterfront, with a drawbridge in front as well as a pair of large, sturdy doors big enough to allow the passage of small rowboats or river cargo barges. It all seems to be locked up tight, and there are no signs of activity out front. The time is early evening, so the streets are beginning to quiet down here in the working districts, with many making their way further into the city to avail themselves of its pubs and inns.
Near to where they stand, there is a fairly low wall- it seems to seperate the main thoroughfare from the back alleys between the warehouses. While this entrance is walled off, further down the road and past the warehouse of intrest, there is an open alleyway.
Sneak, lie or both. Both is a good idea. There's also a low wall one could peek over and see what's in the back alley.

Noticing the low wall, Paenitia makes a soft clucking noise and squeezes with her knees. Ramirez knows to be quiet, they both shuffle sides up to the wall. The peacock is being extra fluffy, to increase his silence. Once close, the Red Knight stands on the saddle, stretching upwards on tip-toes to peek over.
She holds a hand back, in a 'wait' gesture to the elves, as she takes a look.
On the other side of the wall, Paenitia sees that there is another alley here- it extends away the length of the warehouse, and seems to adjoin to a path that runs behind it. As she stands higher on tiptoes and scans her eyes downwards, overcoming the blind spot of the wall, she's able to see the shiny bald pate of a muscular human man with olive skin sitting in a chair and whittling a piece of wood. Next to him is a large, and even more muscular, dog with a short snout and damaged ear, currently gnawing on a bone. Neither seems to have noticed her. Immediately adjacent to this pair is yet another door leading into the warehouse.
Paenitia shuffles Ramirez away, leans down from her saddle to whisper to Lillianath and Aryia, "This is man and dog. They guard the small door. All close the other side of the wall. Not alert. Alleyway goes around."
Aryia scribbles in her journal, moving the pen carefully, afraid to write too loud.
- "May b can go arownd and pre tend?" it reads, showing it to the two of them. "Hard to sneek in wit them right there."
"That does sound like the best idea so far," Lillianath murmurs, after giving the journal a look and Aryia a nod. "My one true concern is that our story may not hold up... but it doesn't need to for very long. So. Sera Paenitia, shall we go play a prank on the workers?"
"Of course." The Red Knight says with muted enthusiasm, keeping it down so she won't be overheard. She does nod vigorously, "We shall bring smiles."
Looking to Ayria, she says, "Be safe. Ye... bang loudly, if you have problems. We come."
With a pat on Ramirez's neck, she nods to Lillianath, "Lead the way."
Aryia nods, closing her book. Bring smiles? Weren't they probably going to...? Ah well. She puts her books away and cracks her calloused knuckles.
As the group arive to the door, their suspicions that the metal plate set in one of its two panels are some sort of peephole seem to hold true. It looks as though it can slide open to the side, though there is no handle on the outside to do so- it's likely operated from within.
Glancing over her shoulder at the mounted knight, Lillianath chuckles. "Perhaps you should do the talking, I think... I've not quite the head for fish-tales." And with that, she raises one fist, and raps hard three times on the side of the peephole, shifting aside to give Paenitia the floor.
A quiet chuckle leaves the shadow elf. A short breath, followed by an audible, "Fssh t-ls."
After the rapping on the door, there is a significant pause- at first, it seems as though there is no one home. Eventually, however, heavy footfalls can be heard on the other side before the slide opens up abruptly. On the other side is an Oruch, though only the bridge of his nose and his eyes can be seen. "Wot you want?" he asks, tone surly, as his eyes sweep left and right across the group.
She's too short on her feet, too tall on Ramirez, to easily see in that peep hole. Paenitia quickly orders, "Ramirez! Lie down."
He does so. It's remarkable how the peacock-andalusian stretches out his talons, drops his hindquarters, and lies on the flagstones, angled just enough that his mistress can peer in the slot when it opens.
Presenting a smiling, masked face to anyone looking out. They will be able to see only her eyes. When she sees eyes, Paenitia launches into a happy spiel, "Hola! I am here for the wares of the Merchant Carabas. He is delinquent. The Peacock Lord claims his storage in repayment. We come to take them. Let us in."

"Sod off." the Oruch answers, and then the peephole slams shut again just as aburptly as it opened.
Again, the door is rapped upon, and Lillianath awats the return of the Oruch.
There, once again, is a delay. The sound of rummaging on the other side of the door, and a click. When the peephole opens up again, the business end of a light crossbow is pressed up against the opening. "I sed sod off." the Oruch repeats himself, with a grunt of annoyance.
Aryia's brows raise from the weapon being brandished. She takes a single step near Lillianath to be right beside her.
Smoothly, the Seer lays a gold coin on the edge of the peephole, beaming at the face behind the crossbow. "It really is important, and that's just to make sure the shutter doesn't fall back. We understand you're very busy, but we simply want to ensure that everybody comes out smiling. The Peacock Lord gets his goods, you free up valuable storage space, *and* make a small bit of coin on the side. We know exactly what we're looking for, so I can promise we won't be long at all."
And just in case the peephole's door isn't getting too heavy, the Seer balances a second coin on the other side.
"Yes. The Peacock Lord, he is very firm. We do not return without the goods. You konw the Boss like that. We quickly get the wares, out of your hair." Paenitia adds, speaking as if it's a done deal where everyone wins, just like Lillianath described.
'Ruaaaah!' Ramirez adds triumphantly, believing he is the boss peacock they are all discussing.

The Oruch seems to consider things a while. Eventually the crossbow goes down, and a hand comes up to palm the coins on the edge of the peephole before they can change their mind and take them back. He pockets them, and lowers the weapon. "Fine. 'ope this lord peacock has deep pockets, though." he grunts. The peephole shuts, and there are a number of sounds from the other side of the door. A deadbolt sliding, a padlock opening, another deadbolt. And then the door opens inwards.
Inside the warehouse, directly across from the door is a raised platform, upon which a couple more thugs dressed in leathers and hempen cloaks watch the door caurtiously as the oruch pulls it open. The warehouse is decently lit, with lanterns, and has arrays of shelves loaded up with barrels and chests, and crates of various sizes stackes haphazardly. There is a pool for a boat to dock in, and at present there is a boat moored- a little shallow-bottomed skiff, which has a number of chests and crates loaded onto it.

As Paenitia tries to maneuver Ramirez inside, the Oruch shakes his head and holds out his hand. "Bird stays out there. Don' want it shitting on the floor." he grunts.
Aryia frowns, eyes narrowing at the Oruch and the other 'warehouse' workers as she sticks close to Lillianath.
"You'll get all you deserve and more, my friend," Lilli says with a smile, breezing past the Oruch. "Now then... Where is that consignment..." Making a show of looking among all the barrels and chests visible from the entryway, even so far as to tip her head back as if to better see, the Elunan slowly, casually begins to pace around the jetty, toward the warehouse shelving.
Aryia follows the fellow elf closely, focusing less on looking at the shelves and making sure there wasn't going to be an unexpected alteraction. She picks at her fingernails in worry.
"You are right. It is much better he go on the roof." Paenitia laughs closely in the Oruch's face, then calls out happily, "Ramirez! I dismount."
He extends a wing, and the little Lucht slides down it, landing on her feet. She squeezes her toes on the cobblestones, then pats her mount on the withers. "Ramirez! Guard."
Her shield is attached to his saddle, as is her sword and warhammer. Also her bill hook, her bec-de-corbin, her guisarm, her guisarm-glaive, her glaive, her glaive-voulge, her halberd and her bohemian-ear-spoon.
And a mighty, masterwork compound bow.
Taking one of these might seem... provocative. She pulls down a Lucht walking stick, that's a refined acoutrement for more civilized engagements. Also she can use it to point at things.
So equipped, she strides into the warehouse, "Look for his symbol. He say it is in Bee three."
As the group head further into the warehouse, one of the two on the raised platforms moves over to the railing, leaning on it and watching them closely- leering, even. His features are mostly hidden behind a bandanna that covers his lower face and a hood that covers the rest of his head, but he has a pair of hand crossbows hanging from his belt, and a scar runs across the part of his brow that is visible- though the eye seems undamaged.
Most of the barreels are closed up, though a few aren't. Notably, one which is full of weapons of various makes and qualities, on the near side of the shelves and second from the far end. They also spy a goblin, who is presently wandering around near the chests with a slate and chalk, opening up and peeking inside the chests and then making notes on the board.
"Can't 'ave nothin on the boat." the Oruch calls out then, "Theys already paid for." he adds.

"Okay!" Paenitia happily waves at the Oruch. Movely close to Aryia and Lillianath she whispers, "There is carrying case the sized right, on the boat." Her mask hides her mouth completely, concealing her communications.
The Dark Lucht makes a show of checking the items in storage, noteably looking for anything that might be construed as a peacock, or another such carrying case. Drawing near to the goblin, who is also right sized, she will cheerfully say, "Hola."
"Very well," says the Cleric, and with a small gesture beckons Aryia to join her as she wanders toward the crates, inspecting them for any sort of mark that would hold the ruse up. "We do appreciate your patience, good Ser, and promise to be out of your hair soon."
Aryia glances to the boat as they continue to 'search' as she nods. She bites her lip, glancing to the door closed to the waterway and how it opens.
The barrels Paenitia examines contain various goods in a frankly eclectic variety. Dyes, rum, flashpowder, spices. Meanwhile the large crate is stamped pretty clearly as being property of the Artificer's Guild, and has various warnings along the lines of 'fragile' and 'explosive'. A couple of the smaller crates nearby have similarly conspicuous markings on them, such as the names of various trading companies or vessels that frequent Alexandria.
The goblin is mid-counting some assortment of small crystaline objects in the chest when he is adressed, and he looks up, briefly, before going back to his counting- not particularly friendly, any of these folks.
The door opening to the walkway seems to open inwards- there are lengths of rope tied to metal brackets on the sturdy wooden doors, so they seem likely candidates to haul it open. There's also a stop bar across it at the moment, a hefty wooden sleeper that would likely take a large oruch to shift. The lower half of the doors, below the waterline, is not solid but a lattice of crossed wooden beams, slimy with algae.
While the group are examining the warehouse, the oruch by the door moves to begin closing the doors to the outside again, and the two on the raised walkway move across to keep watching the adventurers. They exchange brief whispered words. The other is a woman, with a striking resemblance to the shrouded man.
Aryia pulls out her journal, pretending to reference some notes before writing down:
- "Thees peopl are v bad. Murdururs and the lyke," she flashes to Lillianath.

'Ruaaaah!' Ramirez squawks. The peacock lord objects to the door closing and cutting off the sight of his mistress. She looks his way, seeing the danger, as well as the other warehouse occupants re-positionning themselves.
"No! Do not close the door. Ramirez! Keep it open." She orders firmly.
This is enough for the hippogryph. He shoves the oruch, knocking him flying and on his ass. Perhaps he understood the 'shitting' comment. The door is wrenched open. He crows triumpantly, 'Ruaaah!'
Among the peacock fighting circuits, this can also be understood as 'stand and die.'

As things swiftly turn violent, the Red Knight and her Ivory Steed leap into action. Or, creep, as the case may be. Ramirez squeezes through the double doors, advancing on the Oruch. So faint instincts of chivalry making him hesitate attacking a foe on the ground. He snorts derisively, and executes a half-hearted peck that snaps a very firm beak in the warehouse floor beside the Oruch's head.
It would be wise not to stand.
Paenitia meanwhile, quickly looks around. Explosives, property of the Artificer's Guild, and flash powder. Both are dangerous. The flash powder barrel is a little more excessive. "Beware archers! This is flash powder."
Her attempts to tip the barrel over, and roll it across the warehouse are ineffective. She's literally hanging off the top of it, attempting to tip the barrel, and it's going no-where.

"At least it started inside," Lilli murmurs, then glances at Aryia. "Think you can get what we're after on the boat, there?"
Spotting movement out of the corner of her eye, the Seer whips around, raising a finger and pointing it accusingly at one of the 'archers.' "STAY YOUR WEAPON," she calls, voice ringing like a silver bell.
As the command sinks into mind and soul, Lilli pelts around the crates, putting Artificer goods between her and a loaded crossbow.
...Which... may not have been the *best* idea, in hindsight.

The oruch starts to stand. This is what Ramirez was waiting for. The Peacock-Andalusian had warned him, stay down, in his own way. He is an ivory steed, but there is a splash of crimson on his feathers, like blood, well earned and a promise.
He is a dangerous beast. With one solid peck, the oruch is struck down. A dirty mess on the warehouse floor.

When Ramirez makes his displeasure at the closing door known, all hell breaks loose in the warehouse. The Oruch is sent sprawling by the force of the Andalusian's strike against the door, ending up on his arse and winded. When the first peck comes down, he rolls to the side, and begins to stand- but the second peck strikes true, and his legs give out before he makes it upright, falling back onto the warehouse floor. The crossbowmen on the raised platform each reach for the hand crossbows on their hips- but Lil's spell stays one of them, his hands freezing before he can reach it. After a moments struggle, he gives up on trying to disregard the clerics command, and reaches to pull his mask down and pinch thumb and forefinger at his lips. He emits a shrill, loud whistle.
The woman by his side is not so affected "That it is, good luck with that!" she retorts at the dangling lucht, and she whips out both hand crossbows- loosing a pair of bolts in Paenitia's direction while she struggles with the barrel. Neither strike true, one planting itself in the barrel, causing its dark granular contents to begin to leak, the other skitters against the warehouse floor.
And while all this is happening, the goblin drops his slate, and breaks out in a run for the boat and its precious cargo. He curses when he sees the Oruch fall, and is so fixated on reaching the boat that he doesn't give Lil a wide enough berth, and pays for it. Her strike catches him mid run, and he stumbles.
Everything suddenly exploding into a flurry of activity makes the shadow elf duck her head and swing around, eyes wide at everything going down. Heart racing, she gives a sharp nod to Lillianath and sprints over to the boat. Already one to have sea legs, she snatches up the scroll case that was pointed out and takes cover behind any other merchandise on the boat.
"Ramirez! The archers!" Paenitia orders. Her peacock andalusian surges forward.
And then gets stuck navigating the stairs.
Well, he is used to making delicate steps, and manages to do so, weaving through until he shares the platform with the crossbowers. He claws threatening with a talon.
Paenitia meanwhile, grabs something out of the nearby weapon barrel and jogs towards Lillianath. Armour clanking, she's weilding a shortspear now, a weapon too large for her and requiring both hands. "Outside guards will be coming. There may be more than the bald man and his dog."

Nodding to Paenitia, Lillianath breathes a quiet prayer over her weapon, causing the tines to sing with an ethereal, steely note. Looking up between the points of her starknife, she fixes her gaze on the goblin. "Stand down, ser, and on Eluna's word I will heal you. We don't want to kill if we don't have to."

The goblin slumps back at a crate, raising one hand to show it is empty while holding his bleeding side with the other, "Alright, I give, I give." he sputters to Lil. The side door bursts open from outside, the bald human and the dog come rushing into the room. The human comes to a stop, and lifts his crossbow once he's had a moment to take stock of the situation, loosing a bolt at Aryia while calling out to the guard dog, "Sic em!". The dog, meanwhile, keeps running until it reaches Lillianath, slathering jaws clamping around her leg which he wrenches back and forth, drawing blood.
Up on the platform, the two very surprised arches drop their crossbows in the face of the giant andalusian and draw curved single edged blades instead- swinging them ineffectively at the mass of blood-stained feathers before them.

The door slamming open from behind causes Aryia to gasp, the tip of a bolt growing larger by the fractions of a second. On reflex, she backhands the body of the bolt out of the air, it spinning off and clattering against a wall before plunking into the water.
"Fffffhhhaaaaa...." she groans, shaking her hand free of the pain as she hops up onto the dock, rushes forward and jumps atop the smallish crate. With a wide swing of her foot, she careens it down towards the dog. A solid and sickening CRACK coming from its skull.
