  • Summary: The adventuring group appears in front of the crashed Sky Island. Thurid approaches the great crack in the rock, and a dragon appears and breathes fire on her. Battle ensues! There are two more. They are false dragons, Fire Lizards, almost as dangerous as dragons but dumb and flightless. Still, very formidable. Firestarter, Thurid and Braelnoir enter melee and are heavily damages, while Lars and Zaxx remain back. Lars provides inspiration, Zaxx shoots crossbows. Firestarter lands some solid punches, but Braelnoir slices through the lizards in a rage, chasing them into their cave and killing them there. In the aftermath of the fight, Lars is smug and flirty, but no one has gone too far or betrayed someone... yet.

Moments ago...

Everyone was in the Explorer's guild, with a mission briefing completed. The team leader, Lars, was attempting to use a Teleport scroll with questionable success. It wasn't clear if he would succeed before others of his team re-organized it and his face for him. The spell completed, demonstrating that Lars is competent but not enough to accomplish this in an emergency, and everyone was yanked thousands of miles away.

To dry, oven-like heat of the Desolation, and the base of the crashed Sky Island, N'pacier Atol'ciel.

The large, boulder like island had cracked in half in a suggestive way. Thurid approached the darkness of the crevass, only to come face to face with the reason Lars hired bodyguards. A huge, reptilian head emerges from the deep shade. It's scales are grey, dappled in red and orange along the cheeks, and back. The throat and underbelly, what is visible, are a bright red. Eyes, black with yellow slit pupils. Its maw is open wide, and down the depths of its throat, blue-orange flames are churning, and building.

A dragon! A red dragon!

It breathes, spewing flame and adding to the searing heat.

The flame washes forth from the lizard's mouth, blackening the rocks, the flickering edges of it engulfing the Jotun. Temperatures rise instantly to blistering, and worse. It knows the limits of its fire breath.

Now so does the giantborn.

Thurid makes an attempt to shield herself from the encroaghing wave of flame, bringing her arm up to at least shield her eyes, but she is not quick enough to do more than that- it washes over her, blistering her skin and charring her hair. When the gout of flame settles, she grunts her pain through gritted teeth and cracked lips.

Thurid bellows and hefts her hammer into the sky after the wave of fire has settled, "Angoron, lend us your skill!" she bellows out to the heavens. A stormcloud answers her call with a peal of thunder, and her eyes flash bright for a moment to match her glowing hammer. She breaks into a run, across the scorched ground towards the approaching dragon-like beast.

The fiery lizard swats at the Jotun as she runs up, it's massive claws slamming into the ground, missing her.

With a fire-singed foe directly in front of it, the fiery red reptile screeches and snaps. Huge teeth rake across Thurids armour, finding purchase, biting through. It follows with a frenzy of slashes, both claws.

It's not constricted by the cave its emerging from, but its movement is limited, and this may have thrown off its aim. The Jotun sees wicked talons pass inches before her. But they pass, before her.

"Oh shit! Lars! Brae! What do I do?" Firestarter shouts.

She charges past the Merc and to get up beside Thurid.

The orange hobgoblin tightens her fist in her spiked guantlet, which sizzles and starts to smoke in an acrid way, "Lookout Brae!" She moves past her friend and charges the beast.

It snaps at her, huge teeth raking across her skin, drawing blood. She's strike back, a solid blow on the nose that rips free scales and leaves burning holes behind it. The beast snarls.

Lars shouts, "'Star, hang... no you're fine. Uh, something inspirational, only thing I can think of. Heard it from sketchy guys. Friendly enjoy while I was buying them drinks." He strums his lute.

The crack on the back says we're gonna fight

Zaxx is taken somewhat aback yet far enough to get into optimal range for himself and not look as toasty as others might. He loosens a pair of small crossbows from his sides, raises them in near unision and sends two blue lighted cocoons of spiralling bolts into between two chest plates of the incoming beast. He reloads right after, his moves nimble and true to his heritage while oddly minimal. The bolts cannot hold the magic and crumble, leaving open wounds. The mul goes quiet after these testing bolts.

The Korite's eyes track the subtle shift in the shadows and she shrugs the scythe from her shoulder as certain massive, reptillian details are revealed in Thurid's light.

She gets in enough breath to start to call the warning of, "Drag-!" and bring her spiked hand up in an otherwise pointless attept to protect her face as the red collossus's FWHOOSSSSHHHHHH! of fire engulfs the warrior, whose blessings from The Brother she feels suffusing her body.

Unsinged as the breath didn't get as near to Braelnoir as she expected from the stories brings her arm down in time for Firestarter's question, "Move ta hem it in!" eyes alight in the call to battle!

As the Hob merc starts trading wounds with the dragon, she cries, "Star!" and moves forward under the appropriate inspirationals from the dubious bard.

Scythe brought into a proper killing grip as she starts to move under the covering fire of the two-fisted shooter, she bellows a fierce, joyous invitation to, "KORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!" to watch the festivities. After a couple steps to get into a better line of engagement, she's leaned into a charge to come in past Thurid and there is a terrible sound, a ringing hiss woven under a bat striking mud, and muffled bassy pops as the ensorceled blade most uninitiated mock as being agricultural, hews through scale, sinew and bone like cheese and opening the red dragonling from shoulder nearly to hip and bathing her in it's humors.

The great beast, already injured by her comrades, cries out its last and collapses away from her to the dusty sand.

The great scaley beast goes down, split asunder, afforded only a single parting cry in death. No rage, no pain, no simpering. It slumps into a huge pile of meat, steaming and leaking. Dark ichors spreading out of the cavern mouth in sickly trails.

No respite is gained with this victory. From the depths another form is moving, shadows shift on scales. It rushes into the light, close to one wall of the crevass, landing on the corpse of its comrade. This second scaled menace roars its fury, mouth gaping, flames washing out to surround and flow around the merc, the Warrior and the barbarian.

Fire lizards are almost exactly like dragons except they don't have wings. Thats how they are told apart. This dragon, doesn't have wings, so it is a false dragon. The Dragon Preservation Society will not be upset if this is killed. Braelnoir doesn't care, Hell, it's trying to kill her. She's more worried about upsetting Cryo.

Firestarter is in the direct patch of the fire lizard's breath weapon. She screams, raising her arm to shield her face. Her furs catch. She's burnt badly, but still in the fight.

The silver haired merc and the Jotun are caught head on as well, fire all around. It's short, intense, over fast, as bad as it looks.

Out of the shadows, a third lizard appears. It can't maneuver fully into the cave mouth, remaining partially stuck behind the second. It bides its time, ready to strike, or do other things should it be approached. It snaps at the one blocking it, growling, 'move' clear even without language.

Thurid cries out once more as the creature bites deep into her, teeth pushing through armor plating to pierce the flesh beneath. She begins to lift her hammer up when she sees a flash of light reflecting on steel out of the corner of her eye, and Braelnoirs bellowing warcry fills her ears. IN almost the same instant, the creature goes limp. "Haha! Well struck!" she calls out to Braelnoir. "I'll not let you have all the-"

The Giantborn is interrupted as another gout of flame washes over all three of them. Blistering her already singed skin and searing her open wounds, THurid cries out and drops to a knee, taking a moment to collect herself. She forces herself back to her feet, and clutches her holy symbol, "Angoron, give us the strength to continue fighting..." she calls out, almost resigned as she calls upon him for healing energies.

A column of shimmering light engulfs her, and then washes outwards in a gentle wave which surges into the bodies of her allies, staunching bloodflow and knitting together broken skin.

"'Starter! Be careful, stick with your friends!" Lars shouts, still strumming away.

"Nah, I got this." The hobgoblin says stubbornly. As Angoron's healing washes over her, she decides she's taking the fight to it. Gotta impress the Merc, that was one damn good shot.

The orange hobgoblin roars with rage, a wild look coming into her eyes as she steps in front of the red scaled lizard. She's red also, in places, and orange, and yellow. She's flame, she's on fire. That's why she's the Firestarter!

She swings, a smoking spiked gauntlet that tears hissing streaks through the leathery hidescales, followed by a solid punch that forces the damage and acid deep. She screams.

As does the beast.

"Good one Babe!" Lars shouts, hitting a hard chord on his lute, continuing his chanting.

Zaxx has both crossbows ready within a heartbeat, he recocks right after bolts fly as new ones appear out of thin air to set themselves snugly into the bald man's tiny weapons. This time, he sends off a veritable barrage of shots. Three land and on drives the evaporating first bolt even deeper. It is not a pleasant sight!

In the wake of that tremendous blow, Brae breathes deeply through teeth gnashed in her wild grin, silver locks matted to her head like a crimson habit as the creature's blood drips from most of her frame.

She hasn't been so thoroughly annointed in quite the while, but she turns to the compliment with the beginings of a, "Thanks, lu-!" FFWHOOOOOOOOSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!
"-aaaaarrrrgggggh!"
Now smoking in caked on gore, her hairband crumbles to cinders as she calls, "Thurid! Star!" in alarm, red caked tresses unfurling to their full, unreasonable silver train in the sand, "Gonna try'n flank so they don't swarm!"

And she rushes forward to plug the gap between the two red false dragons, her throat reverberating a dreadful roar of, "YOUUUUU DIEEEE!!!!!!!!" as the Silver awakens again... wolflike amber become slit pupiled gold as her skin is awash in tiny sparkles that expand into a faintly pebbled mirror. <draconic>

As she moves, both of the creatures move to capitalize on their reach advantage, their claws spattering the sand with swaths of blood and tiny silver scales before she can close, but once she does, the scythe carves a telling slash through the new contender's hide and the silvermane roars again.

The second fire lizard vents its fury on Firestarter. Her punches hurt, crossbow bolts hurt more, but the creature in its rage blames all the aches on the hobgoblin in front of it.

Fiery, enflamed, its seeing her as some tiny, fire lizard challenger, and slashes, snaps and claws again. The barbarian brawler is nearly overwhelmed as shes punctured smashed backwards.

The third fire lizard retreats from Bralnoir's screaming advance. It wriggles backwards, squeezing itself into the crevass some more, gaining some space. With the improved room, it snaps and claws at the enraged merc.

Landing two telling, painfull blows.

Thurid grimaces as she sees Firestarter taking a heavy beating from her assailant, "Withdraw for now, I'll step in!" she calls out to the hobgoblin, and she lifts her hammer high to bound towards the beast. Its vicious claws catch her across the face as she dashes in towards the beast, tearing a row of paralell gashes across her face which passes her eye, nose and lips- and which bleed freely.

But the Giantborn is not detered, lowering her hammer in the last moments of her charge she swings it in a broad stroke which catches the beast suarely in the jaw, crunching bones beaneath and sending it reeling back- it crashes into the wall of the cavern, struggles for a moment to try and regain its footing, before slumping down as it succumbs to its injuries.

Thurid looks across to Braelnoir, one eye closed against the cascade of blood running down her face, "Another down!" she calls out.

The second lizard drops, its last breath wheezing out. Two huge carcasses fill the cave entrance, slippery to climb over, with barely a clear path around the edges.

For a second it seems the Warrior's words will go unheard, the fiery hobgoblin with take her rage into the darkness, and attack it. Yet, a moment passes, and with a snarl she shouts, "Leave their hearts for me!"

She turns and stalks back.

There's a fumble in the notes, as Lars faces his 'love' approaching with fire in her eyes, and parts of her still smoking from fire breath. "Good job 'Star, great work. Love ya!"

Zaxx finds some difficulty with the pile of dead lizards in the way. He lands only two magically ensconced bolts which crumple similarly. One of them strikes deep, but it is not enough to end the monster. He tsks with a click of his tongue and takes a step for better aiming possibilities.

Her primary goal accomplished, Braelnoir nonetheless endures a counteroffensive that almost completely bypasses her defenses. She roars in outrage at the ringing of violated steel within the Falselings maw. She then is half spun to the earth on the swipe of a massive claw, spraying the wall with more of her scales and blood and the goresoaked scythe chuffs into the sand.

Heedless of this development, jagged, red copper scales dotting her arm shining bright, the enraged human(?) moves in to respond, her fingertips capped with claws that gleam in the light and, like wolverine protecting her cubs, roaring in fury, with three slashes into it's belly scales, the Korite seems intent on -burrowing into- the creature, that dies mid retreat to slam into the stone walls of it's home and slumps to the earth.

Entwined, if unrestrained by sundered sinews, the bloodrager rakes at the sky with a victorious yowl, "WITNESS MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!" <Draconic>

There's a stumble in the bard's song. It isn't a lute string breaking, but it's close, a fumble and then his inspirational ditty trails off.

"Kor's balls!" Lars stares, jaw dropped, as the Korrite tears, literally, into the creature and rips its sides asudner and roars her rage, "I'm glad you only broke my nose."

"Wow." The music stops. Beside him, Firestarter slumps to one knee, supporting herself with a fist. She grins ferally, the rade fading from her eyes, "Good'un Brae, knew ya could."

Silence, the faint sizzle of the lizards' fluids as they drain out into the roasting sun. The creatures are all dead. Lars breaks it, "Good job girls! Great job! We make an excellent team. You can be one of the girls too Zaxx, even though you hung back here. Nice, everyone. Nice. Excellent leadership."

He has to congratulate himself for everyone else's hard work, after all.

Seeing the last of the beasts so thoroughly destroyed, Thurid laughs once more, "Magnificent! You've one up on me, for now." she calls out to the Korrite in good natured rivalry. She takes a deep breath as she lets her hammer slump to the ground, heavy haft burying itself in the soil. "If the area is safe now, we ought rest a while before attempting the climb." she calls back, mostly towards Lars.

She also takes a moment to stoop low, pulling out a small travel knife, she works it under and pries off one one of the beasts scales- the one she finished with her hammer blow, slipping it into a pouch once it's freed.

Once that is done, she will head back over towards Lars, brushing past him to examine Fire's wounds- hers seem the worst, after her own.

Once everyone is gathered near enough, Thurid will clutch her holy symbol once more and calls upon Angoron's aid again. The wounds on her face close, and cease their bleeding, but remain red and angry welts across her face- that will likely leave a scar. With that done, and the most severe wounds sealed up with magic, she will retrieve a healers kit from her belongings, preparing to see to more mundane treatment of burns and gouges that remain.

Lars is making a show of clapping and being all smiles. If he's nervous, it's not showing, if he's being subversive, he's good, all agendas seem hidden for now. He lets himself be shoved aside and leans back to bask as the divine power flows all around, and unnecessarily includes him. "Feels great! I love adventuring."

And then, he has a wand in hand. He's twirling it between his fingers like a large pencily, flip-flip-flip. He grins widely at Thurid, "I've got a cure-stick, it's better out of combat. Want me to use a few charges so you can save a few of your spells for the thick of it?"

"Aye, that'd be handy." Thurid offers the bard at his suggestion. She looks out towards the cave, "Not like any beasties will come this way, with the scent of death in the air, save for the odd vulture I'd reckon. We can take refuge in the cave, and I'll get us patched up." she suggests. She takes her hammer, holding it in one hand and dragging it in towards the cave- it still casts ample light, and will serve as a torch for some time.

Zaxx snarls, "You got something very confused, Maestro Lars, in too many ways. You are to be thanked for your assistance, of course. You two ladies make your entities of reverence very proud, and for good reason!" He stomps about and looks, if there is any help the mul might lend.

"I getchya, let them do all the work." Lars grins at Zaxx, deliberately misinterpreting and mis-stating his meaning. He leans to help the orange hobgoblin stand, "C'mon 'Star, lets get in some shade so the Warrior can bandage you."

Supporting her, he takes her into the shade, where the Jotun gets to work. He's quite interested in watching, and will, for 'educational purposes' unless someone drags him off.

The immediate area is clear, the Mul'niessa easily confirms that. The fire lizards have also taken care of any other nearby threats. Nothing comes out of their cave. It goes further back, seemingly all the way out to the other side of the cracked boulder. There's some more things to see, deeper in, but those are left for later.

After a few hours pass, Braelnoir, Thurid, and Firestarter are as bandaged as they'll be, and not fully restored. Lars hitches up his pants, flips the wand around and says, "Alight! Let me touch you with my magic rod and make you feel better. Say, 'thanks babe'." He flips it like a baton, then taps it on Firestarter's shoulder. Arcane energy flows, her wounds heal.

The bard grins at Thurid, another twirl of the stick, "Next? It works better if you kiss it."

"Pretty sure it'd work just fin if I ripped it off you, too." Thurid grumbles at the bard's attitude, which is gradually grating on her more and more. She sees full well why Brael punched him- though she isn't quite at the point of wanting him dead. Yet. She allows his clumsy double entendres to slide for now, as he uses the wand to help restore their wounds.

"You do like me!" Lars insists, misinterpreting Thurid's response as flirting. "We'll be best friends in no time, you'll see."

Ominous. The wand does work as advertized, even if he insists on being theatrical with it and making some conductor-like flourishes before finally touching the Jotun.

It's not the same as divine healings. It's colder, and taps into the universal song, adjusting the harmony for Thurid on a deep level. She feels better.

Finally, Lars makes sure Braelnoir isn't about to punch him inside out, then heals the merc.

The bloodsoaked merc looks up into Lars, her eyes their normal wolflike gleam, "Shhhhhhhh....!" she starts, then croons an almost gentle, "It's not yer moment, remf."

Remf is a merctalk word, not often delivered fondly, but she almost makes it sound too sweet. She fidgets with her collection of Fang and claw one each from both of her kills and stowed them in her pouches. She considers her allies and ponders the next steps.

Her deeds.

What is she becoming, truly...?

"Rare Exceptionally Musical Friend!" Lars says happily, "I've heard that one before. We're a great team. A great team. You'll see."

Oh. You'll see.
