PRP: Adventure Time 2: The Second Try

Rumours of problems in the sewers of the city have begun circulating and the Adventurer's Guild has been brought in to investigate. Two workers have apparently gone missing and you have all agreed to check it out in exchange for the standard compensation. You find yourselves in the sewers, having just climbed down a wooden ladder to a long platform on eone side of a swiftly-flowing river. Styrner has been given precise directions.

Sploosh!

Namira probably comes down the loudest of all of them, and makes a face. "Ew." She says as she sinks to her ankles in filth. She looks around a bit, making sure nothing is around before the rest come down with her....

There is a dry walkway on one side of the flowing water, and the stream itself looks surprisingly clear right here.

Lorien steps his way and then settles about at the ladder. His fingers grip at it, as he flexes his fingers, and grunts. The youth sighs, and then leaps at the dry walkway. You know, fancy clothing and all.

Styrner shuffles around at the base of the ladder, holding a bright target lantern. "Welcome, Adventurers." He offers, quietly.

Corra doesn't like the sewers, she really doesn't but this is work was so she follows after. She seems to be taking up the rear. She has her bow out and is trying to help watch the rear as well. She does sing softly once they are in there and one end of her bow starts to glow as she casts a light spell.

Namira pointedly takes off her cloak and hangs it up on the ladder. She then looks to Styrner and nods her head. "Greetings." She says before she loosk behind her, and steps onto the dry platform. Seems she's not QUITE as worried about her armor....

The prescribed path leads upstream and then along a side path. The water is much slower once you branch off and the walkway grows mossy and a little slippery, but nothing you can't handle by being careful. Sounds echo all around, up and down the lon pasageways, and Styrner directs you through the maze of branches.

Lorien nods, and begins walking his way along the platform, gaze sweeping about, as he tucks his cloak about his form, fingers resting at the hilt of his blade about the belt, keeping quiet. He dosen't say much, and seems content with following, though his gaze does drift towards those gathered.

"Watch your step," Styrner gestures, pointing his lantern at a gap in the walk. "The paths can be treacherous. It is often, we find visitors floating."

Namira says, "I see it, thank you." She says stepping over the gap, even when the lantern isn't pointed at it. But her attention turns to Styrner. "Visitors? What sort? Any we should worry about?" She says starting to scan in front of them, moving at the same pace, but her eyes turn into a glare...."

Styrner shrugs, "The dark is filled with all manners of fears and spectres." He glances at Namira; "Most of them are imagined."

Namira smiles to Styrner. "And the rest are why I'm here." She says quietly as she lets Syrner tell her which way to go next.

As you travel along the moss grows thicker and the stench grows stronger. Up ahead is the area where workers have gone missing, it is a stretch of passageway with a side-spur leading to a holding pool for overflow during floods.

Corra keeps up the rear, trying to keep an eye out behind them as they go along.

Namira draws her sword and starts to scan the passageway with her sight before peeking around the corner for any sort of clue of what's going on.

Peeking around the corner shows that the pool is there as advertised, noting looks out of place. The stench from the side passage is foul.

Lorien blinks, and glances at everyone, as he simply keeps with the group, his gaze drifting about.

You paged (Styrner, Corra) with 'As you are following Namira down the passage you spot movement from the room, the water looks less watery than you'd expect and you are certain there is something in it.'

Corra frowns, "Ware the water, there...I think there is something in there." she shakes her head a bit nad readies and arrow, being a bit more wary.

Styrner hisses, "The water. This fear, it is not of my imagination..." The Sewer native; "That pool feels wrong."

Styrner has disconnected.

<Note: At this point Styrner disconnected and never made it back. We assumed that he was guarding the rear, and then went off to investigate elsewhere.>

Hearing the warnings from her Allies, Namira looks down towards the water and glares at it herself. After a second or two. "I do not see anything evil in there....."

Corra starts to sing as she hasn't seen anything yet. Her voice raises in a rousing song, meant to inspire her allies and give them a bit of a boost.

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay, don't pose, let me know when you want to jump back in."

Namira knows it's there, but she can't see anything evil. "There's definitely something there, but it's not evil."

From out of the surrounding slime a monstrous hulk rises up with thrashing tentacles that reach out fifteen feet but fail to find purchase on Namira. It stands there and opens a horrible mouth with sharp teeth.

Corra looses an arrow at the hulk and then follows it closely with a second. The first misses though the second strikes it soundly. Her voice keeps singing the words of inspiration as she does.

Lorien pages: I'd like him to use his death ray on it if possible.

Lorien glances at the pool of water, and considers, as he tilts his chin a bit, and blinks. The youth relaxes with his stance, "Huh," he muses aloud, then when the thing comes up, after it tries and hits Namira, he tries taking a shot with his ray... And hitting nothing. So he grunts.

Namira, after the tentacle bounces off her armor, trots her way in towards the monster, and chops with her longsword as hard as she can. Boy does it hurt.

The horrible beast rears up on three stumpy legs and closes its maw on Namira's leg, savaging it. The tentacles flail ineffectually.

Corra looses another two arrows at the beast as it attacks Namira again, the first fails to hit once more, but the second strikes and sinks into it as her voice continues echoing with her song.

Lorien grunts, as he shifts back, and then decides to take another clean shot. This time it strikes true and cleanly into the tentacled beast, as he pants a bit, sweat creasing his brow from the air of the sewers.

GAME: You remove the timestop.

The beast moans as electricity flows over it and collapses, going limp.

Corra stops singing as the beast falls and she looks around, making sure that it was the only one.

Namira watches as the beast falls, and she wipes off her sword. "as long as it's not an Otyguh. They're quite territorial, but they have a right to be down here....."

Lorien lowers with the ray, and then nods, as he glances about to those gathered, relaxing, blinking at Namira, scratching at his cheek, and adjusting his scarf.

Looking closely it does appear to be an Otyugh, once you scrape the muck off. You also spot a body lying on the walkway across the pool.

Namira trots her way around the monster to look at the body. She's slow as hell, but she'll make it over there.

Corra nods and then shakes her head to the side and moves over as well, looking for other signs too as she approaches the body.

The body looks to be one of the workers you are looking for, with marks that appear to match the tentacles of the otyugh you just killed. She has a heavy leather belt with large pouch.

Lorien frowns softly as he approaches the body, and leans on a knee, sighing a bit. The youth shakes with his head, tapping his fingers at his cloak, and considering.

Namira makes a bit of a face. "Well....I guess she was in the wrong place at the wrong time." She says looking at the pouch the woman has with her.

Corra nods her head, "There is probably something to identify her to her loved ones, probably want to keep track of where, so the body can be retrieved later. How many others are we looking for?" she asks and does look for other signs, other workers were by and such as that.

Opening the pouch reveals a few gold coins and a wax-sealed scroll. Opening the scroll you find writing detailing a smuggling route through the sewers. Apparently this worker was scouting it to make sure it was still clear after the other worker vanished/

Namira makes a bit of a face. "Smuggling route." She then looks to Corra and Lorien. "How about we shut it down?"

Corra cocks her head to the side, "So that is what..." she shakes her head a bit, "So that explains a lot."

Lorien seems confused, and rolls his shoulders, "Someone mind explaining to me?" he asks, head tilting as he glances about curiously, and steps lightly on his feet.

Namira says, "Seems there's a smuggling route in the sewers, and this one was checking to see if it was clear when the Otyguh killed her." She then stands up. "And, if this one is a worker, then there's going to be more workers down here, not all of them dead.""

You are confident that with the information in hand you can backtrack to the dock where the smugglers land.

Corra nods, "Well lets do that." she says and then looks at Lorien, "It seems the sewer worker was working with some smugglers and was down here checking to make sure the route was clear." she shakes her head, "I think anyway."

Lorien nods, "Okay," he says, and then sighs, as he rolls his shoulders, and shifts so he can follow with the group, "Lead the way, wherever you go I'll follow," he adds.

<OOC> Namira says, "All we have is the smuggling route and where to shut it down. Burn the foundation and the rest shall fall."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay, I'll fast-forward and emit the location. Can I get Stealth from you all please? :)"

You trudge through the stinky sewers for perhaps an hour, covering a lot of ground. Eventually you come to a break in the wall of the tunnel, opening to a makeshift dock that has a boat moored to it and three tough-looking men lounging around. They do not appear to have noticed you.

Corra takes a deep breath and then moves out. She still has her bow in one hand and then cocks her head to the side as she looks at the three men, "Hello and well met. I have come to ask you to cease and desist your smuggling. It is wrong, and at the moment it is quiet dangerous. If you would like we could escort you safely out of here where you can surrender."

Lorien blinks slightly a bit, and shakes his head, furrowing a brow, "That's... What?" he muses, as he aside glances at Corra, and then Namira, and then simply facepalms.

The three men get to their feet and eye you suspiciously. One speaks up. "You and what army? We can just sail away if we want to. I suggest that you turn around and forget you ever saw us, and everyone will be happier."

The three men look upset at the singing and one speaks. "Hey! She's trying to cloud our minds! Get them!" They run forward, one attacking Corra and drawing blood.

"I KNEW IT!!" Namira yells, and mutters a prayer to Vardama. Her Sword glows a bright blue just as her attack strikes the smuggler in front of her. The blade not only cuts deep from the sheer force of her swing, but the holy power causes the blade to cut deeper into the smuggler's body.....

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay, as you step back, one steps forward to where you were. He must have the Step Up feat. Only one threatens you now though."

Corra pulls back and looses and arrow at the one that attacked her the first time, but one of the others steps up and swings his sword at her. As her arrow sinks into the guy she shot at, she crumbles to the ground unconscious.

Lorien seems a bit frantic and then points up the weapon, but, he then flinches and sends it wild, biting his lip. The youth backs up, and waves his hands a bit, "We ain't gotta fight!"

Of the three smugglers the one that Namira smote takes one look at the massive wound in his torso and runs right off the dock, diving underwater. The second one cuts into Namira from behind, dealing her a wound. The third one steps up to Lorien and points his sword at the man. "Put down the weapon and you don't have to get hurt. Much."

<OOC> Namira says, "If you're an Acanian, then you have +8. Aura of Courage from me."

<OOC> Ssylrath says, "Okay, so you aren't Shaken then. :)"

"DON'T LET HIM SCARE YOU!" Namira yells to Lorien just as the greatsword digs into her shoulder. She grunts, but she notes the one she hit initially ran off. She lets him go, for it isn't in her code to kill someone who is fleeing. She growls at the one who attacked her, muttering a prayer to Vardama, to heal her wounds, which some of her wound patches up, but it's the glowing sword that cuts the second guy in half that makes the whole deal. "Hmph." It should be noted that she has her cloak off....showing herself as the Mul'niessa she is.

Lorien blinks over at Namira, and then growls when the smuggler comes at him. The youth backs up, and then hefts to ready his weapon, but as he does he gives out a growl of pain at the hit, nearly opening him up as the blood from the gash begins to drip and soak onto his cloak, but he manages to take the shot off right against the smuggler, as he winces, staggering a bit.

The one remaining smuggler, smoking slightly from the death ray, looks back at his companion in two pieces and forward at the man with the alchemical gun and drops his sword, raising his hands. "It's not worth it, please don't kill me? We were just trying to make a profit, honest!"

When Namira sees the smuggler drop his weapon, she kneels over Corra and sighs. "Grey harpist.....if it is not her time, please restore her health....." Her hand then glows with a blue light, mending Corra's wounds on the spot.

Corra looks around a bit as she stirrs, "Did we get them?" she asks and then cocks her head to the side some, "Well.." she says softly. "Anyone need healing?" she asks, strangely.

Lorien groans, as he settles back a bit, and then slumps about towards the ground, bringing a hand to his stomache, coughing a bit, and then wincing. The youth pants, heaving his breath, as he glances about, and then lays back to look up at the sky, "Ow..."

Namira chuckles a little bit. "I think we all do. We were all hurt pretty bad." She says before standing up and walking over towards the smuggler. "You should've surrendered in the first place. Your comrade over there would still be in one piece." Cruel joke from the Mul'niessa, as she pushes the smuggler to the side, and presses a hand onto Lorien's stomach, her hand glowing as well.....

The smuggler eyes his weapon on the ground longingly and then looks back at the paladin and apparently decides on the wiser course of action. "We didn't mean to hurt anyone, we was just moving goods through, untaxed-like." He seems plaintive.

Lorien blinks at the glowing hand on his stomache, and furrows his brow a bit. The youth heaves a sigh, trying to relax, as his eyes gently lid, and then glances at the smuggler, grunting a bit, then back upwards, "Wish we didn't have to take them out..." he muses idly.

Corra nods her head a bit, "It was wrong." she says softly and moves the greatsword so the temptation is gone. "Do we tie you up or will you behave?" she asks. She looks around, "We should get back and get the guard here to clean up."

The smuggler keeps his hands out. "No need to tie me, not with that zappy-gun thing there able to shoot me. I know better than to try to outrun magic." He seems resigned. "I'm glad I don't have to break the news to Mitty, she won't be best pleased that Jonan's dead."

Namira smiles at Lorien's look to her hand. "I wish we didn't either." She then tilts her head. "I imagine you've never met one of the Grey Harpist's Absolution before, hm? You're talking to one. I am Namira Aldor." She then stands and looks to the Smuggler as he speaks. 'Who's Mitty?"

The man points at the body bits with his foot. "Jonan's wife."

Namira says, "Is she part of this smuggling operation as well?"

The man shakes his head, then pauses to think. "Well, not exactly. No. It was just us three. That's it."

Lorien glances askance at Namira when a woman is mentioned, "Is she?" he asks, furrowing his brow as he frowns, then adds, thoughtfully, "Anyways, ah nice to meet you, Lorien," he greets, and then lays back a bit more, chewing his lip.

Namira puts her sword at the throat of the smuggler. "How about you tell the truth? Considering we found one of your allies in the sewers after an Otyguh killed her. Plus, it might put you in good standing with Vardama when you do pass away, if you tell the truth."

The man gurgles. "Ak! Okay, there was others too, we paid them good money and until you showed up and Varda didn't come back a couple of days ago, and Mitty'll be upset, and everything went wrong. I wish we never tried this at all!"

Namira says, "Didn't you ever think of honest work?" She then looks to Lorien and Corra. "Even we have side jobs." She then ponders. "You're coming with us to the watch. And don't do anything stupid, you'll end up like your companion over there." She sahs before starting to wipe down her sword. "Get up. We're taking you to the watch.""

Lorien stands up, and then adjusts his cloak, as he huffs a bit. And frowns at the bodies. Quietly, he seems to make a prayer, and then relaxes, as he regards the others, and simply follows with them wherever they make their way.

You take the hapless man back to the Watch, and also explain to the city workers what was happening in their sewers. Everyone is happy to have both problems resolved and you are well paid for your troubles. The dock is destroyed and the break in the sewer is repaired, and the otyugh room gets mucked out so it'll be a proper overflow pool again.
