- Summary: Lily is playing with paper soldiers in a small paper town, all prestidigitated into existence by Cryosanthia. She's reading a book in the Storefront of Mithralla's Merchandise. Seldan arrives, seeking Mikilos, and Braelnoir arrives seeking peace. Both are somewhat to be found. Seldan wants an enchantment that allows him to summon armour like some weapons can. Braelnoir is troubled at how she nearly killed Merek, and how he seems oblivious to all threats. Seldan and Cryo share their concerns about him, he was mentally suffering before he was taken to the Iron Hells and one usually doesn't improve there. The three catch Mikilos up on the events with the devils, and try to determine their purpose, reaching the conclusion that Merek may have obtained an Animus Shard and they were after it. Braelnoir gets angrier with herself, Cryo attempting to console her. Sharing advice Mikilos gave her, there should be no guilt to losing to someone stronger. The whitescale was overwhelmed by the Fae Queen, Cesran was nearly overwhelmed by the same woman that controlled Braelnoir's mind. Kol controlled everyone. Lily gets angry and destroys all her toys, telling Braelnoir to stop thinking 'Ssassa thoughts!'. Seldan has to leave, so they switch to other topics, mostly how to abuse Polymorph before retiring for bed.

Here, a large wooden structure has been built. Its somewhat eccentric yet elegant design suggests its owner may be of the arcane persuasion. To the side of the main structure is a small corral to for horses or wagons. Before the central building, a massive sword emerges from the earth. A sign upon it reads: "MITHRALA MERCHANDISE."
Inside is a small seating area with several comfortable chairs. To the back, an unobtrusive but businesslike sales counter, and two large signs. One asks patrons to please wait here and not disrupt those inside the lab. The other offers a lab rental at a very reasonable rate.
To the left and right are a large set of doors. The doors on the right lead to a large room which takes up most of the building. Several long tables are scattered about, many with small tool racks. A small forge sits off to the side. Unlike the average workshop, maps of celestial bodies and guides to the elemental planes line the walls. Large frameworks of brass, silver, and crystal occupy space between the tables. A large shelf dominates the far wall, the containers upon it sporting such labels as "wyvern bile," "sulfur," "tiger's tears," and other exotic items. A glass-covered hole in the roof, set with mirrors, offers direct sunlight, or moonlight, to shine upon various projects.
The doors to the left lead towards the direction of the mountains and what is reported to be a sildanyari-style ball room. Wizards.
During regular store hours, a young Llyranesi man, Belhan Mithralla, keeps an eye on the shop and the lab. When not cleaning or helping a customer, he can usually be found reading some book from the library.

It's late afternoon at Mithrala Merchandise, after normal business hours, even though it isn't a normal business and doesn't keep them. Belhan is keeping an eye on the shop and reading a book.
Cryosanthia is also reading a book. There's a tea-set nearby with some cooling tea. The whitescale has managed to find a position where she can lean back on a bench and remain propped up by her wing-spars, jammed against a shelf behind her. Presumably, it doesn't hurt, although it doesn't appear comfortable.
Lily is playing nearby. She's set out a small town's worth of rough paper houses, with paper soldiers on either side. A small battle arrangement. She looks over at Cryo, "Ssassa. Need more. Howsss. Ssolderrs."
Her tradespeak is improving. Cryo moves her hand gracefully, her gloves glow, and some simple origami paper forms appear. Boxes. People-ish. "Here you go Lily."
Late hours and late evening suit Seldan just fine. His prayers concluded for the day, it is time to see about some personal errands of the magical variety, errands that take the place of more mundane pursuits seen to during the day. As a nod to the gray and misty weather, he has chosen a simply cut midnight-blue robe, with his usual arcane open robe over it and a pair of trousers and sturdy, new-looking adventuring boots on his feet. Reunion is at his hip, of course, but any looking at him with magical eyes suspect that there is more to the matter than than the simple appearance. He has thrown a light cloak over all, less a matter of warmth than not getting wet.
The door bells jingle warningly as he pushes at the door and peers inside. "Peace upon your nest, Cryosanthia. Is Master Mithralla about?"
"He stepped out to run an errand, but I expect him back soon." Cryosanthia says, kipping up from her seat to stand and make a small bow. The acrobatic maneuver seems hampered by her wing-spars, but also assisted as she pushes off the shelves with them. "Peace on your Nest."
Eventually entering with a knock is a rather withdrawn Brae, shrouded in what might be construed as an Opera cloak of a dark red, trimmed in silver, with a long tailed hood obscuring her hair and the higher regions of her face. After a quick look at the population, including the Silver Guard newly arrived himself, there's a look sidelong out a window for a moment before she unfastens a traveller's day pack that had previously thrown some suggestion that she was hunchbacked to the layman's eye, and she sets it aside with a quiet, "Hey."
From the back room comes a bit of muttering and the sound of things moving around a few moments before Mikilos emerges in his regular Grey robes, carrying a large silver bowl. Setting the bowl on the counter, the elf smiles nodding to everyone present. "Good evening. How may i be of assistance?"
Cryo moves carefully around Lily's action diorama to give her scale-sister a hug. "Glad you made it back safe."
She stares into the Merc's eyes, snout close and inhaling her. A glance at Seldan, a glance back, "Do you want to talk yet? About things?"
Then a longer one at Mikilos. Well, he has ways of getting back she doesn't know about.
"Of course." Seldan answers Cryosanthia first, but then Mikilos walks through the door, and he is at once distr acted."Master Mithralla, good evening, and Her light upon your path," he begins, although he inclines his head to Braelnoir as well, studying her with some concern. "I know not if this is possible ... can one enchant armor such that it may be summoned at will, to appear on one's person? I could have made use of it a few evenings past."
He is only half-watching Mikilos, though - the interaction between Cryosanthia an Braelnoir seems to be an item of some concern.
Braelnoir returns the hug with more fervor than she normally does, and there is a certain disquiet yet about the merc, but she clap-claps Cryo's back before letting go, forcing a smile. She shrugs a bit and, "He's fishin' again..." A spike of ire glides through her, though she's trying to bottle up her expressions. She got whammied. AGAIN.
She notes the look she gets from Seldan and she shoots him a grin, "Sounds like a right handy thing t'ave, now doesn't it?"
She does, however, look down and consider her pendant, letting the Anygarments shift back to her usual attire, "Broke th'pendant Morg made fer me"
Then there's a long stride over to look over the kobold's project, "Whatchoo doin'ere, missy!" she greets, trying to brighten her mood.
Mikilos sometimes teleports to the front yard, sometimes to the backrooms, occasionally into one of the sealed labs dug into the mountain rock. today was a backroom day. He hesitates, frowning thoughtfully at Seldan's question. "I... don't think so. Are weapon that can be called to your hand, and armors that disguise themselves as other things, but I don't think I know of armor that dons itself when needed."
Lily is popping up and down to check on her paper soldiers. Hands and legs splayed wide so she's low to the ground and can look past the heads to see line of sight. She springs up, and keeping her tail high, steps around to another position where she drops. Sometimes, while low, she lifts a hand to adjust a soldier. Often, she'll raise her opposite leg to counterbalance. She looks up from one such balanced position, "Redss fightss bluess.
"There's tea." Cryo says, looking at the teapot, "I can warm it up. Make more."
Her gaze follows Braelnoir as she moves around, "It was a nice pendant. I'm sorry." A slow exhale of air, "Fishing again."
"If what happens to him doesn't bother him, it shouldn't bother you more Brae."
A flash of disappointment registers on Seldan's boyish features, but it is a fleeting thing, and retreats swiftly enough into his usual quiet composure. He does, however, lift a hand as if to snap his fingers, then doesn't try it. "I see. I had hoped not to have to wear armor in the city forever, but if such is needful, then it is my duty to do so." A deep, steadying breath. "My thanks for the insight."
He turns his attention back to the conversation. "You speak of Merek?" he inquires of the other two.
Braelnoir braces with her hands on her knees as she looms over the tiny tableau, "Blue's got some good placement, there." she notes. One hand releases her knee and she dips into a three-point over her niece to kiss her atop the head, "Good work, sweetie." she whispers before pushing herself back up to her full height.
As Cryo makes her remarks, she shakes her head a little, "He's got's head stuff up'n the Planes, somewhere... he don't unnerstand what happened. What coulda happened."
She, however, does snap her fingers as she whirls on her heel, "They didn't want me t'dust him!" she exclaims, then brings her hands, fingers lightly splayed against her temples, "She's in m'head... till I got close ta Merek an' suddenly I's in m'right mind again, Sh'wanted'm on the sunny side'a dead, Mouser" taste the venom in that word, "skank was probly gonna do'm ugly, squeeze'm some 'fore killin'im."
Mikilos nods to Seldan. "There is a brooch that turns into platemail." He considers. "And i seem to recall an enchanted wardrobe that lets one change outfits in an instant. Not sure if it would work with armor." He looks between Brae and Cryo, not entirely following
Cryosanthia nods wordlessly at Seldan, eyes returning to Braelnoir. She faces her intently, focused, listening. "That's... interesting. And possible, her plans..."
Then the Dawn Elf's confusion registers, she turns fully towards him, hands open but low as she explains, "Devils attacked Merek at the South Banks of the Tornmawr, and... an Enchantress who dominated Braelnoir's mind."
The whitescale looks at Seldan, "The soldiers too, that's why they shot her? Seldan was there for it all, Mikilos, and Braelnoir. It didn't go well for her, or Seyardu. Or Aryia. Merek..."
She shrugs, exhaling. "He's fishing. Maybe that's how he's coping. Maybe it's Thursday."
"Yes, that enchantment is known to me, but it proved too slow to unfold in times of need." Seldan smile, a bemused thing. "It is no matter. Wearing it is not so bad as all that." He dismisses the matter, then, and turns his attention to the other evening. "She did. She was casting, and I was too late to disrupt her spell. I would not have had her slain," he sighs. "I would know who it is she looks to, and how it is that she manages to control multiple devils, and at least one of sufficient power to rule a small principality in the Iron Hells. Our foes were of some consequence, of that much am I certain, and too am I certain that they will make another attempt."
He moves to leave carefully against the counter, and absently murmurs a word in sildanyari. Instantly, the image of the robe and trousers vanishes, to reveal his full armor panoply, and he pulls his gauntlets off, to set them on the counter. "I cannot say if this is in any way tied to Salina, although I am quite certain that the Duke has naught to do with this. Devils and demons are seldom indeed in league. I would also learn how they came to be here. Their bodies did not vanish when they were slain, save for the bearded devil, which means that they are here of their own will."
"Which means there's a road in we gonna slam shut." Brae observes to Seldan and she sighs, "One of'em said soemthing about the Iron Hells, which could be shit talk'r it could be she came from there t'drag him back."
Her arms fold at her midriff, fingers curling in enough to make the leather creak...
Mikilos frowns mildly. "Well, it means they were not conjured. Bringing a devil to another plane against it's will is possible, but I wouldn't care to try it. Not with anything more than an imp." The wizard considers a moment. "Well, no, even a minor devil I have no intrest in bringing across planes."
"This one is concerned how easily they seem to pop in and out." Cryosanthia says, sitting carefully on her bench, leaning forward. A glance at Lily, who is crawling around, adjusting another soldier's position and line of sight. "Though, that thought is a comfort."
She looks over at Mikilos, her neck stretching out, "This one hopes never to see him again, nor any of us."
The whitescale lowers her head, vision fixed on a spot on the floor. "She's better, isn't She? She promised. This one would think Her mind would stay fixed, it was so hard to change. This wouldn't be some Daydream where She comes back to her toys..." And pet.
Cryosanthia shakes her head, "No. You're right. She would come after this one. She had no interest in Merek. You both saved Her. She wouldn't send anything after him. My wings may be Her, but not this."
She shifts on her bench, pats beside it, stares up at Braelnoir, "Something after him them. Do you remember anything else said." Up at Seldan, "Either of you?"
GAME: Seldan rolls intelligence: (12)+4: 16
Seldan's eyes drift to the floor. The truth is that the whole thing was something of a blur, and he _had_ been more than a little busy at the time, and he goes silent as he searches through the still frames and pictures in his mind. One thing stands out, though, coming to him after several seconds. "I believe that they asked him about the location of his Shard."
Cryosanthia sits up straight, her neck stiff. Her wing-spars flex outwards, inwards. Her head moves, Mikilos, Braelnoir, back to Seldan. Her words are wary, "Merek has an Animus shard."
Another glance at Mikilos, only to stare at Seldan once more, "This one thought Griva had them all locked down."
Braelnoir blinks, "Wait, he's got a -what-?" she snaps as she whirls to face her sister, "When the hell'd he get a shard?"
Mikilos frowns, but shrugs. "Has it even been firmly established how many shards there are? Possible, though unlikely, are new ones forming."
"I know not." Seldan shakes his head, looking up finally and from face to face, deep concern etched in his demeanor and bearing. "I mislike the idea that such a thing may be true. The Seer should know better, and I fear the consequences if he does not, given his state of mind." Merek, a man that in Seldan's eyes is stark raving nuts, with the power of a shard of a god in his hands? And he is a target for all manner of things? _That is a disaster waiting to happen._
He straightens, looking at the others and lowering both elbows off of the counter. "We should first ascertain if he holds one."
Lily stands up straight, hands clasped in front of her. A mini-version of her Ssassa's formal body language. She surveys her battle field. She pops down again, once more her belly inches off the floor. "Sshoo. Sshoo. Sshoo. Red iss high ground. Behind Huts. Blue climbss hill. Sshoo. Shoo." She knocks over her paper soldiers on both sides. <draconic>
"It hasn't. No firm count, no." Cryo shakes her head, "that was why Griva didn't want us spreading rumours, we might accidentally guess correct."
She looks at Braelnoir, shrugs her shoulders, "I have no idea. If he did, or when. I know he wants one. I know he's said what he'd do if he got one."
"I'd hate to think new ones are forming. Maybe they were always there and have grown strong enough to find."
Cryo looks at Seldan and nods, "Yes. Maybe they were wrong. Maybe they know something we don't."
Braelnoir gives that a few to percolate and shakes her head, "Yeah, I'd rather have a set number than worry about th'damned things just squirting lil'ns all over the place." She turns then to watch Lily hew down the fallen on both sides, before the talk about Merek goes into a potential bad direction, "I won't do Merek dirty." she says over her shoulder, "I promised."
Mikilos sighs, and nods. "far, far too much we just don't know, and have no clear way to find out."
"Nor I, Braelnoir, no matter my concerns. I have not spoken of doing so, but do you think it not a fair question to put to him, if he has a Shard that they seek? If he does, how did they learn of it?" He straightens finally, bearing fully erect and commanding where he was self-deprecating just moments ago. "Your friendship is a great thing, but a friend will also tell a friend when they are wrong. If He does hold a Shard outside protections, where such s they may sense it, he places all of Alexandria in gravest danger."
"Not asking that, Brae. Seldan is right. Whatever is up with Merek it will be worse if his friends abandon him." Cryo says, turning to fiddle with the tea set, her gloves glowing as she warms the water again and places some leaves in the pot. This takes a few moments, after which she stares at the floor and Lily's War.
She looks up at Mikilos, then starts laughing. She does so for a quite a few seconds before shaking her head and saying, "Do you think Griva would let us try the Polymorph idea. Would it say more than 'Renew the Pact' that the Death Orb does?"
She bobs her head towards Seldan, "Unprotected Shards are a great risk. Hm. You know some Resurrectionists caught fire trying to scry for one? Enchanters can't scry, or Devils, all that well right? Merek's divination didn't work well at the Death Orb. Cesran was trying to find them, by looking at the Ley Lines."
"That's how he found out about the Ley Line we're going to go look at."
"Yeah... thought his face popped off when he tried..." Brae says, shifting uncomfortably before drifting over for a cup of tea. She thinks for a few, then, "I never knew how t'andle him after he come back from th'Hells. He's.... too much like some o'my brothers back in the Stride, ones been at it too long an' they ain't anythin' left in'm. When the work comes back to'm in their sleep."
As they sometimes do.
"I failed t'elp everyone too many times an... I've had t'turn m'blades against friends too often already... I.... don't know what to do..."
"I would ask such of her, for I do not know her mind. For now, though, I should return."
Seldan stops, though, at Braelnoir's words, eyes lowering. "Never have you done so, when your mind was yours." He says that as a statement of fact. "I know not what shall be done with the Seer, either. But, in this do I permit Eluna's will to guide me, and she has not yet turned from him. Does She do so...." He trails off.
"I should go." He reaches for his gauntlets.
Mikilos frowns mildly, returning to the silver bowl he first brought in, absently wiping off the metal.
"Brae, it's Ok. It's Ok. Nothing happened, you didn't. They had plans that weren't killing him, you said so. The spells, there was nothing you could do." Cryo rests her hand on Braelnoir's thigh, "You're trying to do all you can, with that cloak, that pendant from Morgan."
"This one knows... this one has been twisted too." Cryo's hands clench up, "I can't believe I'm not evil after all Salina made me do, but you're not."
She hesitates, inhales sharply, exhales. Her breath visible as two misty streams, "You can't save everyone Brae. It's his mistake to believe he can, that if he gets powerful enough he'll be able to. He doesn't see when he makes mistakes. I've talked with him, he appears to agree but then he doesn't behave differently. You might not be able to."
"And he might pull you down with him. Be careful."
She fixes her scale-sister, "Cesran. Cesran encountered her, and nearly lost to her. Cesran is an incredibly accomplished mage. She almost got into his head, didn't because he ... backed off, I think. Something. Point is, you aren't going to beat a mountain giant in an arm wrestle and shouldn't feel bad if you lose."
Braelnoir makes a face on Seldan's reassurances she hasn't made since the crossbow to the boob, and then it collapses to something rueful between the curtains of her head as her head bows.
Steel clinks, leather creaks, but the woman herself is silent until the Silver Guard is slipping out the door.
"...yes, I have..." she breathes.
Stomp! Stomp! Stomp!
"Then God dragonss kill all!" Lily shouts. Paper houses are crushed. Paper soldiers are crushed. The little Kobold angrily flattens everything under her small feet. She stands with balled fists, glaring at Braelnoir. "Ssstop thinking Ssassa thoussss Tiass Braaaess!"
Hissss! She means it.
Cryo startles a little. "Lily... wants us to think about happier things...." She rubs at Braelnoir's back.
Braelnoir brings an unshod knuckle up to dab at her eyes, feeling what her hair is partially obscuring, then she nods, "Yeah... yeah....." Deep breath, and her hand opens and reaches down to gently stroke Lily's head, "Sorry, luv."
Happy toughts, happy thoughts.... no, she's too young for those stories.
And that one.
No, no... ah... wai... no- forgot about that part, definately no.
Ahem.
"I'm ok, now, sorry 'bout that." Another deep breath, then, "So... 'bout this polymorph thing... kinda things can it do?" she wonders, just to change the subject. Of course.
Mikilos sighs, and shrugs. "Very briefly, it can turn almost anything into almost anything else. Just a question of how long it stays that way. But, artifacts follow thier own rules, so hard to say what might happen."
Cryosanthia laughs a little, leaning to stroke Lily's head also, "Thank you, my little mind guardian. Yes, Ssassa's thoughts are the worst thoughts."
The whitescale tilts her head, gazing at Braelnoir, her eyes sparkling. She looks over at Mikilos, head tilting the other way. "This one thinks it may not be artifact related."
"Could it add scales, and a tail?"
Braelnoir shrugs a bit... to adjust the lay of her armor and equipment.
Yeah.
She turns a quizzical eye to Cryo, then turns the rest of the way to Mikilos, "How familiar does someone gotta be with the to an' from?"
Mikilos shrugs again. "To be changed? Not at all. Can be cast on unwilling and even inanimate objects. As a caster, certainly helps, but the spell defaults a lot of the changes.. Which in some ways limits options, but does make casting slightly easier." Cryosanthia picks up Lily and holds her in her lap, "Like Alter Self, but it lasts longer? Could you fix voices with it, or bring back limbs?"
"Bigger!" Lily says.
"No, you're right sized, just like Tia Farans." Cryo replies.
Braelnoir nods a bit, consider the information put forward on the subject. She glances back to Cryo on her addendums, then, "Aryia?" she wonders aloud.
She shrugs, then, a glance at Lily, then back to Cryo, "Sure ya don't want her a bit bigger for a spell?" There's a slightly playful note in her voice.
Anyway, she looks to Mikilos then and, "Seen some trippy transformations before... just kinda wondering about... seein'em again." Mikilos shakes his head. "It's not healing, not properly, and it doesn't last. Not usually. Turning something into better than it was, stronger, smarter, bigger, cuts back on how long the spell lasts. But making something worse, turning a person into a frog, those versions can last until broken."
Cryo grins, nose dipped, "This one has been right sized. It's a trip. Lily has been larger. We have spells. It's fun for play but she doesn't need to be something she isn't. She's fine as she is, there's nothing wrong with her."
Then a slod nod, where she keeps nodding. "Aryia. Yes. She is Warrior-Caste and proudly wears her scars, this one would not take the stories they tell from her. There are still uses for a voice in combat and she may come to miss it, so I'm curious if she asks."
She looks over at Mikilos, "Ah, so not real healing and only worse. That seems less useful."
Trippy Transformations does get agreement.
Braelnoir shrugs it off and nods. Well, that's another off the list. There's a nod to Mikilos and she says, "Thanks, luv."
Then, it's back to Cryo and Lily, "Wasn't sure ya managed that kinda spell, yet." she notes, then, "finally got'm figgered out myself."
Mikilos nods. "Still a handy spell that allows some powerful changes, they just don't last.
Cryo nods, placing her hands to the side of her chest and arching forward, "My corset helps me remember a scroll and I can cast it instead of my regular spells, long as I've looked them over in the morning."
She grins at Mikilos, "like a real wizard with a spell book."
"I only get the one, but I've got a lot of scrolls. Reduce Person, Enlarge Person. Share Memory." She laughs, "I've got a LOT of scrolls. I save it though, or sometimes use it for Endure Elements for Lily in the winter."
The whitescale relaxes into a more normal posture, holding Lily again and looking Braelnoir over before facing Mikilos. "Too bad, there were a few things..."
"Over and done." Brae comments softly, then nods. "Anywho..."
She takes up a teacup for a sip, then, "Back ta figgerin' out Merek an' these damned shards, I guess."
Mikilos nods. "I still feel like there's something about the Shards we're missing. Something vital, but so basic we've been oblivious."
Cryo glances in the direction of the Mansion's invisible door, over at the travelling pack, Mikilos again then upwards at nothing in particular. She rubs at the back of her left hand. "The ones we know about for sure are well protected."
She wobbles her head, "Or like the Death Orb, protecting themselves. There's also the rope."
Her head bobs again, "That's why I wanted to ask one, somehow. That said more than 'Renew the Pact'."
"I'm not sure I want to be there when that happens. What Baz and Tae said, and everything with Salina. I'm worried we'll be stepping stones and nothing else."
"An' there's no way o'knowin' one way or another. Hell, Griva could be makin' a log cabin outta these things once folks trip over them for'r." Brae notes before opting to wisk the kobold up in her arms and blow raspberries against her belly.
The little kobold hiss, tail wagging in surprise before Tia Brayssss starts to blow her wierd noisy kiss against her belly, which tickles the carnationscale to squealing. This, seems to be the goal as she lets up after a couple of seconds, then cradles her to her shoulder and looks to Cryo, "Cain't say yer wrong, but things're rolling an' it's fast oming time we hafta act."
She looks down at the array of scattered and smashed army men, laid low with the ferver and wild abandon of a giant child and the Korite considers the strong possibility that Cryo's fears are valid and the endgame for their world will stand much in parallel.
"We should check on Junior...."
