Issue at Hand
SUMMARY: On their way to guard the Spell Cannon the party is attacked by Fel-tainted boars. (Whirlpool DM)
Local tales of the Demon Binder, Asumit, who dwells in the land of Skald in the Desolation, has long had an interest in Alexandria. To this effect, there have been periodic attacks on the defensive installation known as the Planar Disjunction Cannon. A Kulthian fortress in the mountains near Alexandria houses the cannon, which has from time to time, been unleashed on Alexandria's enemies to devestating effect.. devestating to Alexandria's environment, to its enemies, and to the fabric fo the planes themselves.
These occasdional sightings of demons and elementals near to it are enough to keep the ALexandrians in a stae of perpetual guard over the cannon for its own protection, and it is to this guard you've been today assigned. The previous crew, the crew slotted to guard it today act ually, has come down with a case of food poisoning, like you do, from eating too much gnomish short bread.
Damn gnomes.
This is why you're on the road to the cannon, even now.
On Patrol.
Sevanon isn't often one to pick up guard duty on the fly, but it beats drinking delicious hooch and playing beautiful music with gorgeous people- oh wait no it doesn't. Still, it's a good way to sober up cold turkey, and maybe a chance to extract some inspiration from a moment of bone-chilling terror. Asumit the Demon Binder is scary, and so are his presumed bound demons!
Erakirak is, admittedly, not strictly speaking ON the road. Rather, he is flying over it. He moves a bit faster than the rest of the group that way, and perches in tree-branches to wait for them to catch up, and is just so insufferably PROUD of himself right now that you kind of want to punch him. But, what can you do... his wings only just got strong enough to bear his weight. And like adolescents of all races, especially adolescent boys... well, he feels like he's the first one to ever figure out what they're _for_.
A hawk flies along with him, landing on his shoulder when he lands, and padding along on foot below him is a griffon, who seems to be perpetually rolling her eyes at his airborne antics.
It's not clear he even remembers where they're going or why.
Darius, fresh off his victory in the bare knuckles tournament earlier, is here because the pay is good. He is a mercenary after all, and mercenaries work for pay, he glances at his companions and raises an eyebrow at Erakirak, "You still have that thing?" as he points to the griffon.
Valadhiel walks along near the lead of the group, keeping a wary eye out since she's been taking more of the patrols of late. Not really many better ways to get a feel for the city since she's only recently returned, after all... though one could argue there's many that are /safer/. She then arches a brow at Darius' comment, tilting her head towards him, "What thing?"
Erakirak gives Darius an indignant squawk and does not otherwise dignify his question with a response.
Deak walks along, too, but is so far content to let the others do the talking and squawking.
Darius glances over at Valadhiel and says, "He's had that griffon since I first adventured with him, it's not exactly inconspicious."
Erakirak humphs. "SHE is no more conspicuous than you are."
"I'd rather have a griffon on our side out here than not," Sevanon adds to the conversation. "Anyone seen anything, by the way?"
Darius smirks at Erakirak, "I rest my case..." He then turns to Sevanon and says, "Other than the mountain and the forest and road that leads to our destination? ... ... ... No."
Erakirak shakes his head to Sevanon. "Nothing that doesn't belong." He gives a whistling trill and his hawk flies out ahead of them, and back. "Redwing doesn't see anything either."
Valadhiel hrms, "Does seem rather convenient that the prior patrol would have food poisoning hit them, though." She shakes her head slightly towards Erakirak, "Haven't seen anything down here, anyway... aside from what should be there."
Deak nods. "Considering what's at stake, food poisoning seems like a pretty tame form of attack, assuming it was deliberate."
"Well, they might be trying to be sneaky," Rak considers. "If they'd done something obvious, the Guild might have sent heavy hitters instead."
"Or they just ate a bad batch of rations," Sevanon offers, his eyes roving the horizon. "It happens sometimes. No less inconvenient for us though."
Darius shakes his head, "Rations are the lifeblood of the Guard, they'd have dysentry on their hands if they weren't careful. That sort of thing can destroy armies, but I also think that it's convenient that they and only they were hit with food poisoning."
Valadhiel glances towards Sevanon, "Perhaps. But it's pretty easy to write it off, if someone was trying to be subtle about it." She shrugs slightly, keeping a wary eye out despite the discussion.

Fabris strides along as he goes, trying not to look like he's rushing with his dwarf-legs to keep up. Chin up, looking bold!
Valadhiel pauses, and frowns, looking over towards the underbrush, "Hold up. Something was moving there." She reaches back for her bow, preferring that to her spells... at least until she knows what exactly is there, anyway.
Erakirak draws his bow as well, and signals Silverwing to hold back until he knows what they're facing.
Darius draws his greatsword and says, "Where?" He glances in that same direction, alert for trouble, he's not going to try and bumble into the bush though.
"Wonder what we're dealing with," Sevanon asks, looking around to his companions before going up next to Darius and clutching his holy symbol. "I'll stick by you, if that's okay. I can support you this way."
Deak looks at the underbrush, then moves to position himself in the approximate middle of the party, preparing to cast a spell.
Fabris pulls out his rapier, and turns, palming a dart. "Where?" He echoes Darius.
Erakirak 's wings bear him up above the road, both in the hopes of getting a better view and of avoiding a charge by whatever might be lurking.
There's a snort.
A gutteral snort, now, and you all hear it.
Eyes staring at you from the underbrush, and then something bursts forth into the night. Low, squat, and running on four legs.
And not alone. It's joined by two others, rushing in.
Boars.
Outrageously large boars.

One moves in aft er the other, intending to also gore Sevanon like the first.. but the magic afflicting it put a stop to that.
