- Summary: Even more things from Am'shere are desired by the Mictlan nest-mothers-to-be. A hunting party is sent with the directive: find something big and make sure it dies in a fight. So instructed, Jinks, Aryia and Seyardu venture to Am'shere. Immediately they are attacked by an acid beetle, which does more damage dying than it does directly. Explaining their needs, the local shamans direct them deep into the jungle where larger dinosaurs are. The group fails to find them, and find quicksand instead. While they are contemplating this, several small deinonychus dinosaurs attack them, concentrating on Jinks. They are killed or driven off, but the little man has had enough and wants to go home. Aryia agrees, and Seyardu manages to convince some local hunters to give them some meat from their hunting. All of this is delivered to Cryo, who is quite happy and trying out an ilusionary terrain spell.

"Big. It should be something big, and strong." Cryosanthia said, her arms held wide. The white-scaled sith'makari was looming large herself. She would be nesting soon, and egg-laden was an apt term. She also had recently developed a limp, which remained unexplained.
"Something to give strength, for the last meal, and it would help if it had been in a fight or surprised, so the meat has some adrenaline left." She explained. All the expectant nest-mothers-to-be had become more random. Not illogical or irrational, but some requests were bordering on the superstitious, even with an explanation.
"So, y'know, I'd be really happy if you could do that." Cryo clasped her hands together.
Thus...
... Am'shere.
The heat of the jungle hits like a wet leather blanket and wraps around just as tight. The elderly shaman stands outside the gate, holding onto his staff and leaning on it. He lugubriously gazes at the travelers, asks, "Sssaaaaaa. Even more thingssss. For the nessst motherssss?"
Jinks pauses long enough to splash water from his skin up onto his face, trying something different to ease with the transition of Alexandria-in-winter to the tropics. He caps the soft-sided bottle and loops it back to his belt opposite his quivers, then wipes what little cool water remains on his hand against the back of his neck. "A safe bet," he finally answers.
The gnome adjusts the straps on his new buckler and makes some practice gestures with his arm. He's still getting used to the extra weight. Glancing left, then right, at the tallmen and nods his head; he's ready. "Big game, today. Something we can stalk."
Aryia bit her tongue as Cryo explained what they needed this time around. The reasoning made no sense to her, and was going to protest such an excursion. But Lily gave her *that* look of 'you-signed-up-for-this.'
So, duty bound, she was back in that hot as hell jungle once more. This time more prepared for the excursion, covered in a thin layer of clothes that could hold any masking for scent better than last time. And could be easily cleaned away. Or, disposed of.
She does carry a sign that she asked her goldscale friend to make for her. It's a small thing, one that fits in the strap of her bag. But it easily reads in Draconic:
"Sniff me and I break your snout."
It seemed like she was on her wits end about that.
The mute nods to the shaman, her jabbing a thumbs towards Jinks.
Seyardu had taken to hitting up the markets whenever she could.
Well, they did not sell freshly killed in a fight so the adrenaline was there. There was not much of that in cows or fowl. So they were back in Am'shere. It was a much easier transition for her, butt there was still concern from the prior visit.
"Are you sure it is wise to have such a threatening message?" she asks Aryia. "It really is not that bad, and many may be concerned of your presence already."
"Sssaaaa." The shaman answers Jinks, nodding slowly. The hiss trailing off for a long time, resembling a snickering laugh. Especially after the mul'niessa's sign is read and enjoyed.
He turns, he points down the eastern path opposite the portal. "There isss. The Quesssalcoalusss nesssts. Ssmall ssouth. Large sssouth, the sswawmp. Bigger prey. Ssstrong group."
He is interrupted by a loud buzzing. A beetle that's easily the size of a medium sized dog, which hangs in the air the way dogs don't. In flight, it's more like a bumblebee, a buzz and blur of wings as it tumbles through the air.

Aryia looks to Seyardu, scowling. "Last time I was here, everyone kept sniffing me, and one licked me. And despite the NUMEROUS TIMES I told them to stop, it kept happening. The mothers already have me strained enough as is, so I've lost my patience with it. If they're concerned with it, they can tell me to fuck off. My headache is already enough to deal with."
There's a buzzing coming from the side, and the mute vents her frustration by striding up to it, grabbing the bug from the air, grounding it, and stamping her booted foot on it. <Handspeech>
The bottle-shaped beetle is stomped into the ground. Its shell thoroughly cracked.
It explodes in a fizzy ball of acid as its internal juices mix in ways they weren't meant to.
The mul'niessa easily leaps clear. The sprayed droplets don't reach quite as far at the gnome, but he still feels a spot burning on his cheek.
The shaman, closer to the bug is hit by a larger volume. He was already moving, recognizing the likely outcome, but is still sizzling afterwards.
With a glow, he wips down his smoking scales. "More patienesssss. Egg Watchingsss will teach. patienesssss."
He also gestures to the south of the portal, "Sssticky wood sssap. For your ssscentsss." He's looking at Jinks.

Jinks flinches back but the water splashed on his face-- and new buckler!-- minimizes the damage. He drags a gloved hand down his face with a quiet his and flicks away the diluted by of offending substance. "I'm not even wearing my lavender musk today," sighs the gnome as he quits the portal and makes for the sticky sap.
"The pollen. The lizards were were acting like minddust addicts and provoking Aryia," explains the minstrel, glancing back at Seyardu. "The sign is a better option than actually having to break their nose, I'd imagine."
He comes up short in front of the leaky tree, sighs, and sets to stickifying himself. It might just be his revulsion but it looks like the gnome might be a bit too dainty with his smearing. What a dandy.
"Coyote laughs," he groans, "it smells even worse today... somehow."
"It is like being offended when people ask your name upon meeting you, but I understand. It makes you uncomfortable." Seyardu sighs. Then a large beetle is floating into view, only to be crushed by Aryia. She blinks when it explodes into a spray of acid, and looks around, but no one seems to be harmed badly.
"Ah. Scents are covered, then we go? Very well. Thank you for your guidance shaman, we will be on our way shortly." She waves to the sith-makar before she joins the others.
The lavender musk may have been skipped, but there is no shortage of intriguing, and most importantly, unique scents wafting off the gnome. His hair gel, mustache wax, clothes softener, three different types of tobacco, smelling salts, potpourri snifter, camphor leather wax and mithril blade polish all seep into the jungle alerting the denizens; Dinner is served.
The silver-scale isn't able to find much sap, but also doesn't need much. She belongs.
Aryia jabs a thumbs towards Jinks once more at his explanation. "Acted less like guards and more like the addicts he says," she adds with a gesture. "Though, I am dead serious about the sign. Last time was a warning bap. This time I will break a snout if it happens any more than necessary. I get that's how it works Seyardu, but I have this thing called p e r s o n a l s p a c e." She sweeps the signs through the air before groaning.
The subject was exhausted at last, and she goes over to the tree where she used once before. Dressed for the occasion, this lathers it over everything, even donning a bonnet to cover her hair before getting it over that as well. <Handspeech>
"She said she wanted something big... so further south?" Wonders the gnome, concentrating a moment so his illusion erases the unflattering smearing of sap from his person. Not that he has to suffer the tackiness of it any less. He unslings his bow and tests the draw a few times as he hums, warming his throat and trunk-muscles up just before head down the path indicated by the elder.
"If the giant bird returns my vote is to just knock the bastard out of the sky permanently..." the gnome grumbles about the previous cat-and-mouse game.

Aryia doesn't like this jungle. And to be honest, wishes for this to be over with as soon as she can. She's trailblazing, sort of, but is constantly getting thwacked in the face from branches and stepping in... something or another. She does point out tracks to her friends, but isn't able to make heads or tails of its heading.
Jinks is so surprised he's found tracks that he's not paying any sort of real attention to where he's walking. When the ground proves to be especially soft under his step he tries to jump clear but that causes only causes a deep slurping noise and his foot to sink deeper. The dark earth around him shifts like a thick pudding and his feet have already sucked down and out of view.
"Huh," grunts the gnome as mild alarm creeps into his voice.

Seyardu was following along through the jungle easily enough, but she really wasn't much help in terms of actually finding where they needed to go. So Aryia took the lead it seemed, and she would just have to trust that she could see where they were going. She does manage to see Jinks getting sucked into a bog, and she stops to help pull them out, only to realize that he had gotten so far due to his weight, when she herself is sinking up to her ankles in the process.
'Huh,' echoes the jungle, a head popping out of the foliage to stare at the gnome, frills spreading to either side like some odd blossom. Is it a brightly coloured kobold? No. its head is far to small. It mimics sounds without understanding. This is clear as it repeats itself. 'Huh.'
There are several answers in the bush, 'Huh.', 'Huh', 'Huh', 'Huh," all with that hint of faint alarm. The gnome is surrounded.

Deinoonychus Dinosaurs. Small pack hunters, mimic like parrots, brightly coloured, not very tough or poisonous
"Ah." Seyardu sighs when the quicksand is getting worse, and noises are coming from the forest around them. "Those may be waiting for those such as ourselves to wander into this quicksand, or it is an unlucky coincidence. "They are pack hunters, and mimic other creatures. I will pull you out when I can!" She shouts, trudging slowly, but managing to make progress.

'HSSSSSS!' The brightly coloured lizard explodes out of the leaves, landing on the gnome's head. Talons rip into his hair, there's a solid bite on his ear, and a scraping of foreclaws.
Followed by the painful scrape of those talons as it is knocked off by a second lizard, which ravages his head in a similar fashion.
The silver-scale is ignored. Bigger eats smaller, after all, and she's much bigger than these reptiles.
The Mul'nessia is right on the edge. She easily spots the lizard before it leaps, but it's fast, this is its native environment. She's scraped, but not nearly as badly as the small fellow.

Aryia grits her teeth as she's scraped, her attention more on the gnome in the center of the pit. 'Ah, sh-t,' she mouths to herself before turning and dashing towards the edge of pit. Hopping over a talon, she slides to a halt, ready to get rid of this raptor-like creature.

Knee-deep in muck and savaged by aggressive reptiles. This is how Jinks is repaid for his recent attempts to be a generally kinder and more accepting gnome. Blood flows freely from his various headwounds and he's forced to squint through one smeared eye as he tries to ward off the sniping critters. He doesn't lose himself to panic, though, and manages to push his leg through the sludge and find a thick root to stand on, bracing himself and keeping from sinking further for the moment.

Seyardu manages to mostly pull herself out of the muck, but Jinks is not nearly as lucky, and seems badly injured. She reaches for her holy symbol, and holds it aloft, letting the healing magics emanate, and mend many of his wounds. "Aryia, I will keep us up, but I can not do much while doing so. Clear a path for Jinks if you can!" She shouts.

The little lizards are flashy and fast. One orients on Seyardu, immediately pouncing and scrabbling at her. While it's attacks are weak, and it is small, it still manages to scrape her, blood wells up from her scales.
Jinks is luckier this time around. His wounds closing as the blessing of Althea washes over hi, just in time for more bites and slashes from the Deinos. They aren't impeded by the quicksand in the least, treading water, swimming in it as easily as he does.

Aryia reaches out with a hand as the dino tears into Jinks further. She grabs one by the neck, her driving a knee into it twice before yanking backwards and giving her wrist a flick. Just like a chicken's neck.
She throws the body further into the jungle behind them, planning a path to get around to the other one.

The little dino chirps in surprise as its neck breaks, falls to the jungle floor, unmoving.
'Huh,', 'huh,', 'Huh,', 'Huh,', are answering cries, from the ones in the quicksand, and deeper in the jungle.
The gnome starts an impromptu song as he treads quicksand and ducks defensively, "this little light of mine, oh I'm gonna let it shine!"

Seyardu sees the ongoing fighting, and while she wished to help, she needed to pull herself out of the bog first. Only problem, she could not discern where the solid ground was. And trying to pull oneself out onto more bog. The silver makari flails a bit, barely managing to stay above now.

As the silverscale attempts to pull herself out of the quicksand, she is not helped by the little Deino Dino, who snaps and scrapes at her head and shoulders.
The gnome hardly fares any better, despite his careful dodging and maintaining his balance on the submerged branch, another blow lands.

Aryia runs around the boggy sandpit, bursting through the underbrush to get to the other side. Just barely able to reach in, a foot swoops out from the side and clocks the little dino on the side of the skull, dazing them into inaction for the time being so Jinks could have some breathing room.

He's ad-libbing, badly. Inspiring though.

Seyardu's floundering continues, until she manages to sink a claw into solid ground. With a grunt, she manages to drag herself onto the grass, and spends a moment catching her breath.

As the silver-scale slithers her way up the quicksand's mudbank, the little Deinonychus realizes its error.
The gnome is a far safer target to attack. It pounces at him, talons-first to land and hook into his body, followed by a bite, and the flailing of its small claws.
The small man is once again injured.
The lizard however, does end up missing with one of it's feet, becoming tangled with Jinks.

Aryia yoinks this dino out of the quicksand as well, her slamming it against a tree and bringing it along with her. She raises it, and throws it against the last one, a fist coming down to expedite an expiration so they could delay their own.
Jinks flails and splashes mud at the little dino coming after him, and keeps singing.

Seyardu is trying to catch her breath on the solid ground, but the small dinosaurs are giving her very little time to do so. She holds out her holy symbol, but caked in mud as it is, and tired as she was, what healing she can offer for the moment is much weaker than usual. The cleric sighs and pulls herself to her feet at least, and readies her polearm should any approach.
'Huh,' the small dinosaur says, after it's smacked around by the mul'niessa a bit. It sinks in the quicksand.
It's not obvious if it did this deliberately, or accidentally.

Aryia is about to bring the end to the dino assailing the party, but it seems Ea had its own plans. She shakes her head, uncoiling some rope around her bag strap and tosses one end towards the gnome. She whistles loudly at him to get his attention.
So used to furling sails, she turns and yanks with her back and arms, gritting her teeth as she feet sink into the muck of the jungle grounds. Slowly, she pulls free the bard, and breaths a sigh of relief once he's free.
She gestures as an off comment, panting, "The more I come here, the more I hate this place. I don't know how you like it here, Seyardu." <Handspeech>
Jinks wraps the rope around his forearms. He's dragged into a horizontal position, sliding up the bank of the quicksand hole. Rescued, he still successfully held onto the rope, so he was helping.
"Thanks tallman." He stands, flicking the watery mud from his clothes, wiping himself down. He points at one of the dead lizards bobbing in the muck, about to sink out of sight, "Can anyone grab that?"
"I'll tell the impending mommas it's the best I can do." Another tug, adjusting his clothes. He smells like swamp at least, "I rather run around underfoot, seems safer."
Seyardu was busy collecting herself to help pull Jinks out of the quicksand, but Aryia manages herself, and they are no longer under attack for the time being. The silver cleric sighs as she uses the hooked end of her polearm to pull the body to her.
"It is not usually this bad, normally you can at least go a while without being attacked." She replies. "But, it is home, and where my people live."
"It's given me insights." The gnome grumps, feeling his hair and picking small leaves out of it.
Aryia shrugs. "Home can still suck." Double meaning there, as she was was one to not hesitate to throw her homeland under the wagon.
Thinking it was a good idea, Aryia fishes out a dino before it could be reclaimed by Ea, her slinging it over a shoulder by the neck. "I'm sure the mothers were expecting something bigger. So..." a slightly devious expression crosses her features, one that was more fitting for mul'neissa in general. "... let's get some meats from Mictlan, mix it in with these, and say we got a large feast. They're nursing children, not fucking dragons. Don't need all this complicated reasoning for just food. The nest stuff I get. This?" She shakes the dino. "It's just meat. <Handspeech>
"Sounds good!" Jinks says, satisfied with the plan, "Well least they died excited right?"
He almost died, that was fairly exciting. The lizards should be happy. "When you're ready, Tallman."
Seyardu looks to Aryia, and her head tilts just a bit. "They likely were, yes. But meats from Mictlan? It will be obvious once we even step foot in there. Just as I can tell who you are just by the scent, so too would it immediately be clear that this meat is not from Am'shere."
"That being said, I do not feel safe wandering just the two of use further. If we are to get more meat, there should be some hunters near this side of the portal. We can speak to them if they have any to spare."
Aryia rubs at her temple, trying to massage out the constant headache that was there. She huffs out a gout of air as she ambles back to the portal. "Guess it's just some kind of weird ass craving, like, pickled deep fried rats or something."
The mute shakes her head to discard errant thoughts. "Fine. Let's see if they'll spare any here." <Handspeech>
Backtracking through the jungle is a chore. It's hot, wet, the ground is soft. Roots and vines are everywhere. A few times large bugs come buzzing out of the underbrush or canopy.
They almost always go for the gnome. They never last more than one onslaught of fists.

Seyardu treks back through the jungle with the others, and thankfully they are not attacked by anything particularly dangerous. They reach the guarded portal again, which has a few people coming and going. The cleric manages to wave down a few travelling hunters, and after she explains their situation, they agree to part with some of their catch with little concern.
"This is why I like it here." She states to the Mul'niessa as she stows the meat away. "That they would share what they have without thinking how it benefits themselves. Because it is the right thing to do."
Aryia isn't very good at helping Seyardu. Her headache coupled with the inane task sets a permanent glower on her features. Coupled with the sign on her bag, the only thing keeping her from getting kicked out was her reputation.
The elf shrugs lightly. "I guess that makes sense. Guess I can't judge the place, never having grown up in something like that. People helping another. Save for my parents."
Her headache worsened slightly, her setting down the game to scribble something down in her journal before picking it back up. "Let's head back." <Handspeech>
The hunters are generous. It is the silver scaled's appeals which get results. The mul'niessa gets several glances, then none, after her sign is examined. The sith'makar are not the most expressive of people's, the 'cold-shoulder' is difficult to discern from uninterested acceptance.
The gnome is all for heading back. A familiar buzzing noise prompting him to state, "that looks good, let's go."
The group transits through the portal, endures the druidic examination on the other side, and soon is back within Mictlan proper.
Cryosanthia is located outside of the Nesting Grounds, which appear to have vanished. The pyramid, the living palisade, the warmth fire have been replaced by a heavily forested hillock.
"What do you think?" She asks, launching into an explanation as she stands in place and executes some awkward, reciprocating, dance move, "I'm trying out a new illusion spell."
The whitescale notices the food, "Oh! You were successful! Oh wow! Oh that's so much. That will be great! Thank you! Thanks so much."
"Everyone we got the special food!"

Quicksand Rules

Characters in quicksand must make a DC 10 Swim check every round to simply tread water in place, or a DC 15 Swim check to move 5 feet in whatever direction is desired. If a trapped character fails this check by 5 or more, he sinks below the surface and begins to drown whenever he can no longer hold his breath"

A rescuer needs a branch, spear haft, rope, or similar tool that enables him to reach the victim with one end of it. Then he must make a DC 15 Strength check to successfully pull the victim, and the victim must make a DC 10 Strength check to hold onto the branch, pole, or rope. If both checks succeed, the victim is pulled 5 feet closer to safety. If the victim fails to hold on, he must make a DC 15 Swim check immediately to stay above the surface."
