- Summary: An unknown explosion plunges three adventurers into the dark and wipes their short term memory. They seem to be underground in a dungeon or catacombs. A large amount of clicking preceeds a wave of giant roaches that enter the room and attack. Battle ensues, with Glasha casting disrupt undead, as Wu first shoots his crossbow then switches to a sword. Orenthal attacks with his quarterstaff. The rogue is the most successful bringing them down, and assists Wu as he is overwhelmed. Finally enough of the carapaces are destroyed that the group can concentrate and kill of Glasha's. In the aftermath, there are few answers. Retreating from where the roaches appeared, they find similar chambers to the one they started in, and finally a long corridor. Following that takes them to a mourner of Vardama who has been waiting for them. He says he can't explain their memory loss, but they were hired through the Explorer's Guild to check out some odd noises in the catacombs. These noises might have been the bugs they destroyed, but at this point the group just wants to go home, and does.

Something just exploded!
It's the first thought in your mind, a mind which is surprisingly empty. Questions immediately follow. What was that? Where am I? What am I doing? Thinking back, it's just a blank.
There's a sensation of a warm wave of air rushing by, air tinged with magical energy. A wave that blows out all light sources magical and mundance.
As the light fade there's a quick glimpse of the room. Stonework, ten feet wide, thirty feet long, with alcoves on the long walls. Three layers of them, containing coffins. There's a five foot wide corridor entering and leaving. The ceiling is low. The air is cool, clammy, it's a dungeon, or more likely, a crypt.
When the darkness becomes total, then the room echoes with rasping sounds, clicks and buzzing.
Orenthal is dazed ad in the dark. Where was he? What was he doing? Knowing these would help tell him where he is now, but he has no idea. A quick view of coffins and stonewor, then darkness. "What's going on?" he asks quietly, using his fine staff to feel his way around as he gets to his feet.
Wu blinks..and then a few more times. He knew this day would come. The total loss of sight rather then the half sight he had. He thought he'd be ready for it but the suddeness of it all. The strange surroundings. It's too much. "I'm Blind!", he calls out.

Glasha lets out a squeak of surprise. She huffs out some breaths. "Stay calm," she says. "I can see. Stay calm. Let me cast light real fast."
Glasha's hand is revealed atop the head of her axe as it begins to glow. The light pours out onto giant cockroaches worse for the wear, all missing bits with their carapaces in bad shape. "Are either of you two good in a fight? If not, get behind me," she says.
The giant roaches pour out of the far tunnel, a disturbing number of them, at least eight surge towards the party. They swarm and seem skittish of the light source, but everyone is rushed.

The light comes forth and Wu can see! Joy returns and he crows. "I can see!" And then theres huuuuge bugs and he yells again. "What the hell are they! Sick cats! loads of them!" He lifts his heavy crossbow and stares at the wall..while aiming at a ninty degree angle. THUN the bot flies and hits, going through one that still crawls towards them. "Missed.. damn it."

The roaches surround the party members, each biting away. Only Glasha escapes injury.

Orenthal says to Glasha, "I'm no warrior, but I'm not about to be a bug's lunch, either. Not if I can help it." He'll stand tall where he is and lay about him with the quarterstaff, spinning and smacking the bugs, who perhaps weren't expecting attack from that angle. If he's no warrior, he's at least fast, and he's no shrinking violet, he gives one a solid blow from his staff, then another, and it's good and splattered. "That's one down," he mutters.

Glasha raises her hand and speaks, trying hard to remember the basics of her necromancy as she draws her hand back and close to her side, a ball of energy forming in it. As she thrusts it forward, it passes through the roach's body, carving a path as it goes. She laughs and jumps. "Ha ha!" she says, gleefully, though quickly regains her composure as it doesn't go down.

With a rulctance Wu 'drops' his crossbow. More of a careful setting down of an old friend. Then he awkwardly pulls a blade from his hip and slashes out widely with it, cutting into the bug he hit before. "These damn cats! Bad kitty. Bad! Shoo! Away with you!"

The roaches swarm and circle, mandibles clacking and snapping away. Wu is crowded, the bugs surrounding him and getting in bites. Deep ones. Orenthal and Glasha are luckier, but still suffer damage from the mouldering vermin carapaces.

Orenthal swats at the pests as they swarm around him. Since he's in the middle, he's got a target rich environment, and there's more bugs on Wu than Glasha. He'll try to remedy that, twirling his staff and lashing out left and right, smacking a bug between them just as it lunges for Wu. The pair of blows shatters it, and there are no guts, just the shattered carapace. "Undead bugs?" he wonders aloud.

Glasha tries again with what she did before, but her success before makes her slightly more overconfident, and she curses herself as she feels the searing pain of a bite.

Wu is not feeling so well. The 'cats' have done a lot of chewing on his legs and ankles and then they're jumping around at his face no less. He strikes out and down at a jumper and misses but in turn all but crushes the one at his feet. "Take that you feline monster!"

Buzzing of decript wings and the clacking of the roach carapaces fill the air as they hover and bite. The one Wu struck earlier falls to pieces as it moves towards his head, the one at his back, clacks against the ceiling.
Likewise, the roaches on Orenthal bob about, but fail to connect. One on Glasha draws more blood.

Orenthal may not be a fierce warrior, but a gentleman does not abide bugs, and Orenthal certainly doesn't, moving to smash another one as it tries to track both him and Wu. His staff strikes hard and true, and there are only bits left when he is through.

Glasha is bumped by one the other side of her. With a quick movement of her hand and some eldritch words, she spins on her heels and fills the undead insect full of positive energy, its unholy guts sizzling as the blast tears through its thorax.

The older man swings his sword again and manages to shave away a few of the creatures legs. "Ha! Got your whiskers you feral feline! Run off now! Shoo! SHOO!" Yes. There is something wrong with this man.

The roaches are shattered, slashed and shot. Mildey carapaces lie in pieces around Wu, while two of the flying bugs crowd Orenthal. Despite the disruptive energry and a well placed sword-slash, one manages to land a bite.
Glasha is being menaced from her front and back, the roaches lunge, and miss.

Orenthal peers at Wu, puzzled, but an oruch casting spells instead of hitting things is pretty odd, too. He is confused, but also surrounded by bugs, and bugs he has a plan for. The plan involves smashing them with his staff, which he does the momemt it turns its attention to Glasha. He may not be a warrior, but he's putting paid to these bugs.

Glasha manages to angle the magical shield to deflect the pincers and such. Blood, gore, and viscera splatter her before rolling off her like water off a duck's back, her clothes still looking new. She repeats that gestures and words, but having a bug popped on you does tend to distract one, somewhat. With the blast completed successfully, she manages to blast a hole in one, but it doesn't feel powerful going out, and the one is looking like swiss cheese, now, but still not down!

Wu blinks.. tries to clear his eyes of the shadows he sees. Then pokes out at the one he struck before, grunting as muscles protest. "Damn getting older is a pain." He swings a boot after it as well but does nothing other then risk his own footing.

The roaches rasp their carapaces, clatter and attack. Their blind ugly heads bob unsettlingly close to Glasha, but it is Orenthal who is wounded in the onslaught.

Orenthal is out of targets to catch at unawares, he will have to fight on his own now. The one that bit him, that's the next one he focuses on, smashing it with two blows from his staff and leaving fragments of shell on the ground.

Glasha is quite tired of trying to force herself to go through the hard necromancy stuff, so she just lifts her axe-staff with both hands, Luna flapping up into the air as Glasha slams the greataxe into the bug's carapace, splitting the thing in two in a messy display. She lifts it and says, "Now you made me mess up my axe!" she insists at the other still near her, angrily.

Wu blinks again and rubs at his eyes with the back of a hand that holds his sword. A sword he drops as he notes the bug behind Glasha out of the cornor of his eye. Bending over he picks up his crossbow and again aims..while staring at the wall. The bow all but in the crook of his arm. "Alright lady.. Hold still now." Thun! The bolt smacks the tail endo the bug as it jumps. "Damn cats!"

Roaches are falling to pieces everywhere. The air is unpleasantly filled with particulate, smashed off their carapaces or released as they are crushed and destroyed.
The last remaining one is spun around by the blind archer's crossbolt, but even still it's snapping head strikes the half-oruch with its mandibles.

Orenthal finds only one bug left, and it takes a bit of movement to get into a favorable position. He's particular about that, but his care pays off, he chokes up on the staff and delivers a two-handed blow with the staff that smashes the bug to pieces.
The eerie clattering of the roach corpses dies away as the last one is shattered into pieces. There are shards of shell and bug pieces strewn about the chambre. The air remains dusty, the mouldering encrustations smashed free and dispersed, slowly filtering to the ground.
There's no further noise, only the strange shadows cast by Glasha's axe.
There are two exits to the room, the one originally to the party's back, and the one where the roaches emerged from. Neither looks familiar.
Susie casts a couple spells without speaking, cleaning her axe, then her hair. "Hi," she says. "I'm Glasha Meldado. I'm a wizard. Do either of you know how we got here? I just remember an explosion."
Orenthal looks around, looks to his erstwhile allies. "Er, well met," he offers. "Orenthal Keepman," he introduces himself. "I ... feel like I just woke up here," he admits. "No clue where we are or how we got here." He looks around at the exits, and suggests, "The bugs came from that way, so I'd suggest the other way."
Wu looks like he'd like to sit down. Instead he reaches dow nand picks up his sword and sheaths it and then reloads the crossbow. "I'm Wu. Soldier. Retired." He states in response and then looks about as if he could see well enough to tell. "I don't know this place. Was a big old flash of light. Thought I'd gone blind. Nice to meet you both. Wish it was a tavern we were meeting in rather the where ever this place is.."
It is quiet. As silent as a tomb.
"Alright, both of you, come here. I'm going to cast light on your swords. I don't need it. You two do." She approaches each of them to touch something they offer to cast light onto. After each has something glowing, she points at the passage opposite the roach entry point. "Way out?" she tries.
Orenthal sighs to Wu, and says, "I wish it were a tavern, too." But wishing won't make it so, so he'll head out through the non-bug passage after allowing Glasha to cast Light on his staff, which he'll hold aloft as needed to see.

Wu steps forward and offers his crossbow for Glasha to touch with her magics. "I'd like to have words with who ever got us in here. But that can wait. There a way we can follow airflow? A draft mayhap?" He works a sore shoulder and grunts. "I best.. stay towards the back." He says as if ashamed.
It's a short passage, it opens into another chamber almost exactly the same as the one the party found themselves in. Ten feet by thirty, small shelf alcoves on the long walls that hold coffins, a passage on the opposite side. A hard floor and no evidence of tracks, little dust too.
"Let's hurry, shall we," Glasha says. "This shield spell won't last forever." She continues moving driven by desire to exit more than anything else.
Orenthal nods, no arguement from him. He'll hustle a bit when there's no sign of bugs, he'd like to be out of here, too.
Wu finds himself in the back, searching for the two that were just there. "Wait for me.." He hisses and follows along at a wincing long legged pace and grumbling to himself.
The passage out of the second chamber leads to something different. A long corridor that it joins perpendicular in a + shape, as opposite is another passage. Beside it, is an X marked in chalk. Looking up and down there are further openings spaced along this long corridor, far enough apart that the geometry of the side passages could be duplicated.
There are chalk Xs further up, down, there aren't, and the passage the party is leaving doesn't have any markings beside it.
"Okay, so the people coming in or going out hadn't gotten to our passage, yet," Glasha says. "What was beyond that roach-room, I wonder?" she says, turning back toward it. "This is the only one without a mark on it. Did they not make it this far, or did they get out?" She runs a hand over her hair. "Were they making only left turns or only right?" she asks herself.
"Were they left-handed or right-handed," Luna tries to interject from the top of Glasha's greataxe.
Orenthal nods to Glasha, and agrees, "I don't think they got as far as our passage, but I think they came in from that way," he points, and will lead the way in that direction. "You doing okay, Wu?" he asks.
"What are we stopped for? What are you talking about..What marks?" Wu asks as Glasha and Orenthal speak. "Me? I'm fine." He thumps his chest and winces, taking a side step. "Ok.. Maybe not so fine, dang it. But I'm not about to lay down here and wait for help to come either."
Nothing moves in the long corridor, nothing emerges from the near side passages. It remains silent.
If the old man's going to complain about going slow, Orenthal will pick up the pace, hustling along the passage now. We're not going to surprise anyone, not with our lights, so there's not a lot of point to going slow. He won't go so fast as to lose anyone, but neither is he wasting time. It remains quiet. The air is still. There are no tracks. The long corridor is well constructed, precise. There is an unsettling feeling, but it remains peaceful. Side passage after side passage is passed, each with an X.
Up ahead is a light, either too dim to see at a distance or suddenly produced. A shadowy figure bears it, standing in a small room at the end of the corridor. He's facing the group, stooped with age. His clothes, vestments, are a grey that blends in with the surroundings and the low light. He watches everyone approach, unmoving.
Wu quits complaining as the pace picks up, too busy trying to breathe at an even pace. Obviously out of shape. Retirement must have been nice. When the figure is seen ahead he squints and grunts. "Odd place to put a statue. At least it acts like a lamp though."
Orenthal will pause as he gets to within about thirty feet of the figure, and he switches the staff to his left hand, palming a dagger from the belt at his waist. He watches the figure as it watches us, and will take maybe a step closer. To his allies, he whispers, "Should we rush him? Maybe get past? I don't think he can stop us all. He looks pretty old..." But then again, Wu, so maybe old doesn't mean slow?
The figure continues to peer at the group. His eyesight might be as bad as Wu's, but the party has a lot of light. Finally he calls out, "Did you find out what was causing the noise?"
Wu startles as the statue speaks and moves. "What?! What do you mean noise?! Good gods above, you talking statue! What are you talking about? Why'd you bring us here.. and how!?"
Orenthal peers skeptically at the figure, and counters with his own questions: "Who are you? You know us?" He sighs to Wu, and says, "It's not a statue, it's a man, and older than you. A bit."
"Oh dear, you look injured. Come closer." The old man hobbles forward, takes out a set of scales and whispers a prayer. A warm sensation flows through everyone. Wounds heal, pain eases. There is a sensation of peace, and perhaps final rest. Things like arthritis, cataracts and frustratingly the memory gap remain.
"You're in Alexandria, in the catacombs beneath the Temple of Vardama. You were hired through the Explorer's Guild to investigate some noises we were hearing. I don't know why you've forgotten that. You must have found something?"
Orenthal peers at the old man. He won't complain about healing, and since the fellow seems on the up and up, he'll slide his dagger back into it's scabbard. But he says, "We woke up in a crypt of some kind, no memories. So whatever's making the noise, unless it was a bunch of bugs, will still be a mystery."
Glasha rubs her head. "I want to go home. I need to stop signing up for these things," she says. She looks up to the person and says, "Can I please go home?"
