  • Summary: The party has tracked the villagers, finding several prisoner and others completely under control of the mold. They discuss tactics and move closer. The prisoners definitely can be saved, and effort will be made for the others, but the battle will be complicated and that might not be possible. Ashlee gives the command to fire, and Rumbo sets off his Dragonspitter. Rocky moves to a bottleneck position. The mold and hosts return fire, running up against the sith'makar and discovering he is hard to hit and impossible to move out of the way. The mold itself turns out to be very lively, often peeling away from incoming strikes to allow the host to be hit. Ash heals her compatriots, but Lysos and Burai enter the prisoner pen and take significant damage doing so. Also, the attacking sentinels are harmed more often than the mold that is controlling them is. The fight goes slowly, but the party might prevail!

Previously...

After a village near the Felwood sent a request for aid for a bizarre, rapid onset madness, the Guild tapped the group to investigate and resolve the situation. Easy enough to say.

Harder in practice, when the village in question is a ghost town by the time the they arrive. Aside from some frightened, and relatively well fed field mice, one of whom currently dwells in Ashley's pocket, there were no signs of life. Further investigation discovered a body, dessicated, but dead of battle wounds, caked in the dried remains of some kind of mold.

Mindslaver Mold.

After a quick impulse check to leave the forest untorched, the crew managed to track down the victoms and captives of the Mold, slowly cycling through hosts within their defensive perimeter. From their overlook some distance away, it comes time to decide the next move....

Rumbo spends a few moments loading the Dragonspitter he carries. Powder is poured into the muzzle, a patch is placed on and then a lead ball is rammed in with the aid of a thin rod. "Are we ready?" The gobber asks, glancing first to the somber Arvek Nar before looking to the others. <goblin-talk>

Ash rechecks her count from her concealed vantage point, and repeats the numbers in her usual monotone. "Confirmed, eight prisoners, ten sentries." She examines the bushes and the area some more, finally pointing, "They might come that way when they attack. Rocky should block, ranged for the rest of us."

She pauses, then repeats Rumbo's question, "Are we ready? I'll command fire."

Rocky nods in agreement. "This One would favor getting betten captives and infected, tehn fight, but sees no way to get there. Lureing may be best."

Rumbo nods his head as he speaks, "Alright. Two simple spells before I shoot. At your word Master..." He trails off the gobber as eldritch words are chanted. As he murmurs the Dragonspitter is waved around and taps himself on his body in various places and... is that oil leaking from the barrel to stain his clothes where the muzzle touches? <goblin-talk>

GAME: Rumbo casts True Strike. Caster Level: 1 DC: 15

Burai changes back into a half-orc. He exhales. "I don't see a way to sneak the captives out. Should we deal with their captives first?" He squints in the direction of the sentries and then looks up at the sky. "If we can seperate then we'll stand a better chance."

Rumbo shakes his head after tapping himself with the dragonspitter a few times and gestures out with it. Speaking roughly in tradespeak he says "Prisoners bad. Forget now. Shoot soldiers... there!" He points with the dragonspitter at the sentry with a longbow before continuing, "They come, we kill. THEN Prisoners saved. Many kisses. Lots treasures!" A smile at these last words. Rumbo then nods to Ashes and begins chanting as he aims the Dragonspitter at the archer, squinting along it's length as he stretches it out in one hand.

The overlook originally is a quarter mile off when we ended last time. The party moves up to a more favorable position, about one hundred feet out. Rocky is taking point as melee tank while others hang back with ranged weapons. The intent is to draw the sentries away from the prisoners, who are currently surrounded.

GAME: Burai casts Barkskin. Caster Level: 6 DC: 15

'Get closer so we're in range.' Ash suggestes in monotone, pointing out the locations that Rumbo has suggested to her. It will put the party within one hundred feet of the sentries. The mourner will position herself close enough to be able to channel heals for the sith'makar. She looks around to ensure everyone is in position, ready to launch their attacks and with their spells up.

Everyone seems to be. She raises a hand, hand-gestures are useful. Her commander used them all the time. She drops it, 'Fire' and repeats for Rumbo, "Fire." <goblin-talk>

Rumbo continues to chant under his breath as he moves up with the others, one eye sighting along the barrel until the command is given in gobber-talk. As soon as the word is spoken the dragonspitter barks like a loud kobold yipping, smoke bellows from the muzzle and a flash sends a ball of lead flying out to strike at the archer. The gobber smiles broadly but as soon as he can after Rumbo is already working to reload the firearm!

Rocky really is a bit of a teddy bear. Large, but good with children and prefering peaceful solution. He is, however, a quarter ton of heavily armored teddy bear, making him almost as dangerous as the Teddy Rocksbin from the 1980s that would eat your child's hair. With a roar, the sith hurries forward to the choke point, making himself, at least for the moment, the center of attention... and hopefully of attacks.

As the granite-scale sith lumbers forward, Ashlee moves to keep up. She wants to stay close, but not too close. She brings out her holy symbol.

Burai chants a spell under his breath. His skin thickens and grows rough, accompanied by the creak of a great tree swaying. He breaks into a trot, following after Rocky.

GAME: Lysos casts Shield. Caster Level: 5 DC: 16

"Defendarius!" Lysos lowers her hand after summoning her briefly visible shield, then glances at the others. "Are the... uh... ones guarding too late to save?" she asks, not quite desperate sounding.. but clearly hesitant. "Is there no other way?"

"The host can be saved, but the mold has to be torn off first. It's traumatic." Ash advises.

GAME: Rocky rolls intimidate: (20)+7: 27

Rocky is over 400 pounds of primal lizard charging forward. That's before we get into the heavy layers of armor and rather large sword. In short, he's -scary-, and having moved into position, the sith lets out a roar to make that concept very clear.

As the bowman staggers from the shot that creases his skull, the sentinels start to move. Foremost being the ones in armor, who's blank stares bely their intent as they run toward the fearsome Sith warrior calling them out.

Ash participates in battle the way she normally does, by standing there and staring at things. She picks out a likely target approaching Rocky. She contemplates all the events which might have brought it here, which sadly is a fairly short list. A villager, infected early by mold, then overcome. Mold, that should die. A lucky hit from the sith might smash a lot of it off. Perhaps the villager could be saved then. As these thoughts drift through her head, her eyes bore and burn into the host, and she thinks of dire consequences.

Still bleeding, if sluggishly, from the wound on it's head, the blank staring bowman turns, deftly nocking and loosing an arrow to sink into the gungoblin's body.

Still giddy from shooting the archer Rumbo busies himself with reloading the dragonspitter. Powder is poured into the barrel and a leather patch is placed over the muzzle. Before a lead ball can be rammed down though an arrow finds Rumbo and skewers him through the chest with it's tip emerging from his back! Blood spurts from his mouth as Rumbo tries to say something but nothing else emerges and he collapses to the ground.

Burai whips his head around to follow the path of the arrow before it strikes down Rumbo. The druid nods gravely. Bow beats firearm. But fire beats both. Or so he always thinks. As he moves back towards the fallen Gobber, Burai chants again. A small ball of flame appears above his open palm, and he slings this in an arc back at the archer.

The rest of the gang, looking a little worse for wear, turn and half of them move up to reinforce the line stopped in front of Rocky, while the rest maintain position, including the one watching the whimpering prisoners.

GAME: Lysos casts Invisibility. Caster Level: 5 DC: 17

Lysos takes a half step towards Rumbo as the arrow takes the gobber gunner down... the sitation being a little bit terrifying for someone unable to see all that far ahead at the moment. But she /does/ see Burai pulling back to rush to Rumbo's side, and it's not like she has much experience with healing people anyways.. So instead, she raises her hand, traces a rough eye in front of her.. then jabs her finger through it as she says, "Poof!" And she's suddenly out of sight.

Rocky stands his ground, content enough to face multiple foes, but quietly glad there isn't room for them to all come at him at once. The siths large blade flashes, attacking one of the guards, to minor effect.

With the imposing draconid actively attacking the mold instead of the host, the three infected men redouble their efforts to attack him, though only one, a woman sunken enough to seem in her 50's despite the vibrancy of her skin and hair placing her in her early 20's manages to land a blow.

Ash sees Rumbo fall, and hears her drill seargent lecturing her about being responsibe for goblins again, and how they'll fall down often. 'Heal 'em up, iff'n there's no hobos about!'. The mourner is a hobgoblin, but she decides she'd be exempt from that rule. Marvelling at just how well Rocky is being a rock, she moves over to Rumbo and shakes her readied scales. Her words, once more, are unhurried and monotone, "She forbids you to die."

The hunter, it's new brain smarting after being burned(Fire BAAD) nocks and looses an arrow that sinks into the druid.

Rumbo groans as he pushes up from the ground and, arrow still piercing his chest, continue to load the dragonspitter. More powder, another patch and then the ball rammed down the barrel. "Thank you!" He calls out as he begins to hobble forward with the assistance of the broken-hoe crutch. <goblin-talk>

GAME: Burai rolls ranged: (4)+6: 10

Burai skids to a stop as Rumbo is revived. Then an arrow strikes Burai himself. Frowning darkly he turns. He gives the archer a glare. Then he begins walking towards the well-chosen position where Rocky is holding off the enemies. His fire appears in his hand again, and he immediately slings it again, this time missing wide. Once more the flame appears above his palm but now it begins to flicker, clearly losing intensity.

Some climbing will be involved. The little cul du sac they're holed up in has some sheer drop offs hemmming it in like a bowl.

Lysos does her best to control her breathing as she tries to find a balance between rushing and stepping softly. She trusts her magic to keep her out of sight... but who knows if these things can smell her. Or sense her. Or... a rough shake of her head has her dispelling that rabbit hole of thinking. Then she gets far enough around that she comes face to face with the cut away rock dropping down into the bowl. "Great.." she mutters. "You're going to regret this, Lysos," she tells herself.. but proceeds to crouch down, then push out over the edge.. carefully climbing down to the floor of the bowl. Not falling is the priority, of course, so she's not super quiet about it.. pebbles fall, boots scrape. But since falling would probably involve screaming, it's probably the best she can do.

The mold doesn't seem to hear the subtle scrap of pebbles and dirt as she makes her way down.

With the Rocky road before them, unable to help their enslaved kinsmen, the less armored hosts shift toward one of the walls of the fatal funnel, two of them capably assume boosting positions, which makes the last one's failure to get up even more laughable.

Meanwhile, the three holding back seems intent to remain on standby, looking about.

Rocky hisses at the pain of his own wound, but carries on, attacking again to try and whittle down the foes before him. Thus far, it's slow going.

The armoured hosts, distressed that their secret is so plainly known, continue to flail doggedly at Rocky, for all the good it does them.

The ashen Arvec looks around, scanning the ones she needs to assist. Rumbo is up, Rocky is a little bit injured but healing can wait. Lysos... has vanished, but hopefully knows what she's doing. Burai's fire is effective but getting low.

The best thing she can think of doing is to glare at the sentinels, specifically the mold that covers them. If something happens to that, maybe there's a chance. So she stares at it, like an unlucky battle totem.

The hunter manages to evade a fireball, and replies with another arrow that manages to land in Burai once more.

Rumbo mutters as he hobbles forward with the help of a broken hoe. "Stupid Myrrish archers! Pox on you pinkskin." Then he begins to chant quietly as he stretches out the dragonspitter and aims at the hunter and their longbow, squinting with one eye along the dragonspitter. <goblin-talk>

GAME: Burai casts Stone Call. Caster Level: 6 DC: 15

Burai chants again. It is more louder this time, revealing that he is in fact speaking the secret language of the Druids. As his words reach a crescendo he throws up a hand. A hail of tiny pebbles patters down. Where they strike armor they rattle and bounce off. Against stone they clatter, before collecting in a layer of debris and gravel. And when they strike against exposed flesh, which is admittedly somewhat infrequent...they thud alarmingly.

Lysos maneuvers as best she can to be as far from trouble as she can... while still being close enough to help, if she can. So it is that she finds a bit of a nook within the wall of the bowl. She raises her hand, then declares, "Flambo!" As the line of fire blinks into existance, briefly connecting her to her target, she becomes visible...

Now that the rain of stone has abated, even though the debris makes footing difficult, the burly pair more awkwardly boost the last up onto the ledge overlooking the fatal funnel and he shamles closer to the Sith.

The back two turn the instant the remaining watcher is blasted, and they run toward Lysos with their clubs.

The watcher, himself, his puppet master still smoking, steps closer to the caster, when a tendril slurps up off of the man's shoulder to disgorge an acorn sized spore at her that erupts on impact into a grey/green cloud of dust. That can't be good.

Rocky mintains his attack, though things goes slightly south as the evil mold stuff manages to dodge adn he hits a real person... a sentence which may upset the Pro Spore Collective-'Molds Are People Too!'

The armored ones, still trying to break through continue to hack at the armoured sith, though they may as well be swinging at butterflies.

Ash adjusts her position, she's unaware of the danger Lysos might be in, so she concentrates on the fighting surrounding Rocky, Rumbo and Burai. The mold moves, she wasn't expecting it to be so lively. She focuses on a patch, glaring, willing it to stand still long enough for someone to smash it off.

It also might be time to do some leadership things. That's a thing commanding officers do, inspire moral. She decides, she's not going to cheer. In her usual monotone she says, 'Good work everyone. Keep swinging.' She decides to add, 'Is anyone in trouble?'

And just for Rumbo, she repeats herself even though she is loathe to do so, "Good work soldier. Keep shooting." <goblin-talk>

There. Leadership!

The hunter, knowing what the others know, doesn't even spare the situation a survey as he instead sends another arrow at the druid, barely winging him.

KABLOOM! The dragonspitter barks in Rumbo's hand launching smoke, flame and a ball of lead at the archer (whose arrow is still skewered all the way through Rumbo's body) "Up yours Pinkskin!" He roars out in Gobber and then works to reload the artifice weapon, grabbing the horn full of powder from his belt. <goblin-talk>

GAME: Burai rolls intimidate: (17)+3: 20

Burai glances around, gauging the party and their different situations. A moment later he shudders and then changes, into a jaguar. Claws extend from each finger and he runs down the wall. A low growl emits as he lands behind the guards that were moving towards Lysos. "Poof!" Lysos says one again after some frantic hand gestures and backpedalling... If the word carries a little more panic in it than it did the first time, can she truly be blamed? Thankfully, despite the sudden fog in her mind and the almost impossible to resist compulsion to sneeze, she manages to get the spell off and vanish from sight.

GAME: Lysos casts Invisibility. Caster Level: 5 DC: 17

Lysos backpedals, waving her hands quickly and vanishing again leaving her mold-stricken opponents to flail about blindly trying to hit her.

Now things are jupin! Suddenly, as there is an angry janguar behind the two pressing Lysos, one turn to take a swip at him with her club to no effect, while her partner, steps in after the vanishing spellweaver and swings wildly, making contact with his own truncheon.

The watcher's moss peels up a tendril on the opposing shoulder and spews another little acorn sized projectile at the cat, but it splatters uselessly against the sheer wall instead.

Similarly inspired, the peasant atop their barricade lobs a pod at the nimble sith, but misses.

And lastly, not to be left out, the last two peasants try to work out getting up top with their buddy, but managed to fail.

Rocky attacks again, cutting a bit more moss, but not nearly so much as he might like.

Perhaps feeling the press of mortality coming along, the battered moss decides to sic it's host on a potentially suicidal lunge at grabbing the Sith, but manages only to sieze disappointment, while of his two compatriots, one of them manages to connect with his hammer.

GAME: Ashes casts Sanctuary. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 (As CLW)

The ashen Arvec has lost track of Burai, and Lysos, this could mean bad things. She calls out, louder than usual, but still lacking all emotion. "Burai, Lysos, do you need help?"

In the meantime, she advances up behind Rocky, taking care to not step on his tail, or get hit by it when he does some attack. For a big guy, he's quick, and usually unstoppable. She clinks her holy symbol, then rests her hand on his back. "Feiu of the Tears, strengthen this one." A chill flows from her touch, and his wounds heal.

The hunter firest again, arrow striking solidly.

Rumbo pours a measure of powder from the horn flask into his dragonspitter, covers the muzzle with a leather patch and then rams a lead ball down the barrel. "Suck a goat you Myrrish son of a pig!" He mutters as he hobbles forward, struggling over the rough ground with that broken hoe as a crutch. <goblin-talk>

Burai surges forward, fixated on the truncheon-wielder. One paw swats at the figure, trying to scrape off mold. It's hard to tell if his attempts are successful. Unlikely, some inner voice tells him.

Lysos does hear Ashes calling.. she hesitates to respond, however, hoping to try and avoid impending physical trauma. Unfortunately, the swinging truncheon gets lucky.. or maybe she made some sound its wielder clued in on.. either way she's sent stumbling when the weapon smashes into her. She follows her stumble through, however, trying to remember some of the things she's been taught.. and scrambles past the Moldy Man and his buddy and Burai, revealing herself some ten paces beyond with another beam of fire. "Flambo!" Unfortunately it doesn't strike the moldy bits like she'd hoped, the uncannily intelligent vegitation managing to pull away and leave the scorching beam to strike its host instead, sending him to the ground.

Bound and determined to get around the Rockyblock, the two hapless hosts manage to slip, with many roostertailing pebbles and flailing of limbs, to end up stacked prone on the ground.

Their friend fairs less well, for, as he tries to give teh indominatble Sith some Death from Above, he misses completely and there are muffled wet crunches in various places, and the poor sap wobbles unsteadily on his feet.

The last standing peasant whistle a club past the Jaguardruid's head.

The moss at the his paws, however, manages to spit a spore up into his fur, engulfing him in another grey/green cloud of dust

And te mold from Lysos' last target, with a sickening sclurtchy noise, peels out of the dying man to start slowly drag itself with bloody tendrils, five whole feet closer to the knot of bound victims....
