The festival is in full swing, but that doesn't mean there are no problems. Big festivals need a lot of supplies and there has been a disruption. Each of you has been approached by the son of the orchid owner. He explains in low tones that his father's farm is being plagued by a vampire. It's only attacked the animals thus far, but it is enough to have made their farmhands leave, which has left them unable to gather enough product to bring to market, not to mention that his father needs to stay there to protect his mother and sister.
So, with directions to the farm, which is about an eight hour trip, you set out to bring an end to the menace tormenting them.
"A Vampire!?"
That was the reaction of Smythly to the news and that's why he's on his way to the farm in question. The little goblin of paladin made an oath, right ther eon the spot, to destroy any foul undead plaguing the area. He is a paladin. This is what paladins do.
Alice goes with everyone to look into the trouble that is going on at the farm. She looks around a little bit, "So there is supposed to be a vampire there?"
After hearing of the vampire attacks on the farm, Orion comes to the farm fully equipted in his half plate armor. Orion looks to Alice, "According to what the son told us, yes. I have never fought a vampire before."
Stirling nods grimly, its all the same to him and the bonus is that they wont have reflections to ruin to perfect mirror finish on the chrome of his gauntlets. "Should take a punch in the face as well as anyone else." he comments wryly.
Stjepan is part of the goon squad. Really, it's hard for him to avoid it. He, himself, has a giant dran flail held in hand -- length of chain wrapped around his hands. "I hope someone knows what it takes."
Alice shrugs slightly as she looks around at everyone, "Well I think we will find out fairly, though I am sure it dies just like anything else."
The trip is long, but generally uneventful. The farm is off the main road, in an area with a few larger farms near the mountains. Following the smaller road to the farm, it's pretty much what one would expect from a distance. A decently sized farm house and a barn, rows of trees, a reasonably sized garden. Getting in sight of the house, it's clear that all the doors and windows are adorned with garlic, the shutters closed, the whole thing set as though prepared for war.
As you approach, the time now late afternoon, a man comes out and walks directly towards you. "Greetings! You must be the ones my son found to help with this problem, yes? Excellent! It has driven off all my help and I've barely been able to get any sleep, staying up to keep my family safe. It has been striking near dusk almost every night. I am just glad I've had enough rock salt to keep it at bay. Any questions, or do you just want to do your thing?"
Orion gives Alice a small smile, "I guess we shall find out." He now looks to the others, "Alice is the only one out of this group whom I have worked with more then once. Would be nice to know the names of those present and what you are capable of. I am Orion Prime, a Paladin of Daeus." He then looks to the man and says, "Just one question for now, you say it, not them. Does this mean there has only been one vampire attacking your farm?"
"That would be us! I am Smythly, Paladin of Reos!" HE glances towards Orion at his introduction, and gives him a polite nod of his head. "A pleasure to be journeying with a wise Sith Paladin!" And then he has a drink from his flask. Booze is holy to Reos, after all, and this is a holy quest! Apples mean cider. And cider is often boozey.
Stjepan nods his head, considering the doorway and just how much he'll have to duck. "Stjepan. No titles, I just solve problems." With a ball and chain. "Did you see it? Do you know it's a vampire?"
Alice looks the farmer over, "So are you sure it is a vampire? Do you know much about that sort of thing?" She looks around to the others in her group, "I am Alice."
Stirling mutters "Stirling Ironheel" as he follows the others. The furnace on his back indicates that hes no ordinary hobgob.
The man looks away slightly at the question. "Well... I'm not completely sure. I've only seen one at a time... but I haven't really seen it that clearly. But, when I spotted it on my cow, I hit it with a chunk of rock salt and it hissed and ran out of the barn, so it must be a vampire." He points to the house. "Also, the garlic has kept it away from the house so far. It is a small one, though. I guess maybe a gnome or goblin vampire? I'm not really an expert on them. But, it's already drained one of my goats and two chickens, and it's made off with two more goats and three chickens. If this keep up much longer, I'm not sure we'll be able to recover, assuming it doesn't come for us."
Stjepan glances at Alice. "You wear a lot of animals. Are you good with tracks? I wonder what's actually out there."
Orion gives a Smythly a nod, "I hope we honor both our gods with our actions tonight." He now looks to everyone, "If Alice can't track it, I believe we should talk about how we shall prepare for the vampire if it comes tonight."
Alice looks around, "Well I can give it a try. I don't know if they can fly or anything like that though. So I am not sure how hard it will be." She takes a look around the area for any tracks she can find.
The man beam at the talk. "Excellent! My son knows how to find quality heroes. Come, this way. I chased it out of the barn just last night, so it's probably the best place to start looking. I've been keeping the animals inside these past few days, to try to keep them safe."

"I see," says Smyhtly to the man in question, "That does indeed sound like a vampire, but it could be other possibilities as well. Like giant s;lugs! I am sure that salt would cause them no end of trouble." His tone is humor. "You have our assurance that no matter the nature of the rpoblem, we'll put an end to it."
You paged Alice with 'There's definitely tracks of something that ran from the barn, probably last night. It's bigger than a goblin, but smaller than a human. And it has claws.'
Silvana is probably trailing behind because well she's late
Stjepan nods slowly. "Well, let's see what there is to find." He looks at Alice. "Tell me if I'm stepping anything important. Otherwise, I'll guard the barn door while you look."
Alice looks around carefully and points at some tracks on the ground. "Looks like something bigger than a goblin but not as large as a human. It looks like it has claws as well. So that sounds like what we are looking for."
Orion greets Silvana when she join the group, "Great to have you with us Silvana." He now looks back to Alice, "Do you think you could follow the tracks back to it lair?"
You paged Alice with 'There's definitely a trail going away from the farm.'
Alice starts to follow the trail to where it is going, "Well lets see where it goes then."
Silvana comes to stand near Orion waiting to see what's the plan.
Stjepan nods. "We just want to make sure we're back for dusk, right?" He wraps his chain around his waist, and pulls out a him-sized bow.
Orion brings Silvana up to date, "Alice has found tracks of the creature attacking this farm, we believe it to be a vampire. We are going to see if these tracks can lead us to the creature." He then nods to Stjepan, "Of course."
<OOC> Stirling says, "Sorry, have to deal with work." Stirling goes OOC. Stirling has left.
Stirling volunteers to stay at the farm, just in case it comes to attack before everyone can get back, an offer that the farmer is happy to take him up on.
"Lead the way, ma'am," says Smythly, giving a nod towards Alice.
"We'll watch your back." And with that, he slings his massive hammer over his shoulder.

Silvana looks back at Stirling at the offered and shrugs quietly moving with the group.
The trail continues for a while, towards the mountains. You are getting close to an outcropping of rock, a rocky cliff that's approximately a hundred feet up. The trail is leading towards the base of this cliff.
Alice looks around a little as they come towards the mountains. "Looks like it is some where around here."
<OOC> Orion says, "Will sense for evil, in case it is close by."
Stjepan looks up at the cliff, closes his eyes, and mutters to himself a little. He does a slow circle with his bow, then frowns. "What about caves?"
"Oh dear," says Smythly. "I hop we're not going to have to climb." He looks down at his armor. Then up. Then down at his armor. Then up. GRimaces.
Silvana looks curiously around for perhaps another entry or maybe a secret passage or something.

Continuing to follow the trail, Alice notices a small cave. Small enough that it would be a tight fit for a human, though a smaller person couldfit without real trouble.
Stjepan just /looks/ at Smythly. "We don't have enough grease for me to fit."
Alice points out the small cave. "Looks like a pretty tight fit. Maybe we can try burning it out or something though? Unless someone wants to go inside?"
With a sigh, Smythly looks at the opening after Alice points it out and then says, "Well, I can give it a try."

Silvana is standing there trying to figure out how everyone is going to fit into that cram little spot when something catches her eye and she turns to look realizing it's not friendly and it has claws, and scary teeth she doesn't wait for it to do what it might plan to do and she fires at it "We have company" she lets the others know if they didn't notice her shoot, hey it can happen.

In the cave, a shape runs out of the darkness towards Smythly. A bundle of claws and teeth, that looks like a slightly smaller version of the thing outside, leaps at him. A claw hits the goblin solidly, scratching him.
Outside, the larger critter leaps down from its higher ground and pounces at the woman who injred it. Savagely, it proceds to maul her, biting her as its claws rake across her chest, causing some rather severe gashes.

Stjepan drops his bow, and clutches at his dean flail. He uncoils the length of chain, then starts swinging. He sends the head out with a resounding *THUD*

Smyhtly's cry is a bit more shrill than perhaps he'd like to have admitted, but he brings his sledgehammer to bear and swings it at the beast. Of course, it nimbly is able to dodge out of the way of the entirely too clumsy swing.

Silvana had enough of the mauling from the creature she does a rather impressive acrobatic turn putting Orion between her and the creature before she turns and shoots at it though the arrow goes a bit too low and misses it's mark.

The smaller one in the cave doesn't like the ball of fire that's up against it's back, so it leaps at Smythly witha renewed vigor. It bites him viciously, clawing and tackling him as it presses forward, trying to pin him.
The bigger one outside watches Silvana tumble away. It sees the arrow hit the ground in front of it and turns, leaping at the one with the large ball and chain. Its bite comes up short, but both of its claws rake across his chest.

Stjepan is totally off balance and stumbling now, and while he makes space for his flail, he gets exactly nothing but air.

"Augh, augh," is Smythly's intelliget response. Cognant of the danger her's in, though, he manages to call on Reos' blessing and his wounds seem to seal.
"Right, then. Let's try this again!" His hammer hits the gorund as the beast dodges out of the way. "STAND STILL, YOU!"

Alice moves the sphere a little to keep it burning at the evil blood drinking creatures while she rushes over and starts chanting a spell. While the ball of fire burns away at the monster she heals her allies wounds.

With Silvana now clear of danger Orion can fully concentrate on the creature. He uses all of his might and hits the creature with a powerful strike from his longsword.

The small critter is getting the upper hand. It pins Smythly and bites his shoulder hard, starting to drink his blood, clearly getting invigorated by the process. Looks like these are definitely the creatures.
The bigger one outside is still bleeding and it howls out as it's stabbed by Orion. Turning, it pounces at him, but its claws just scrape over his armor.

Stjepan keeps moving, but his swings stay ineffectual. He slams the flail-head into the ground nearer the beast than before, though!

Letting out a scream of pain, SMthtly manages to force the horrible beast off his person for the moment. He's not out of the woods yet, but at leas the's no longer pinned and unable to fight back.

Alice focus on moving the ball of fire on the monster to try and keep it burning, while she jumps back a little further and throws another smaller ball of fire at it's face but just misses.

The bigger one has fallen, but the smaller one is more fierce than ever. With its invigorated speed, it manages to bite at Smythly twice, clawing at him as well as it starts to knock him off balance.

"Ow, ow," says Smyhtly. He rights himself, then, and brings his hammer around to /smash/ it into the smaller one's side. "Try and eat ME, will you," he roars.
But he's a goblin so it's more like 'squeaks'.

Alice chants softly as her hand glows and she steps over and touches Smythly, sending healing magic into him, healing some of his wounds but not by very much this time.

Orion was impressed with the damage Silvana was able to dish out, he decides to heal her up a bit more so she can dish out even more damage to the small creature.

The smaller critter is apparently the more fierce of the two. Continuing to press its assault on Smythly, it bites him twice, the second more vicious than the first. When its claw comes down on him, he's knocked to the ground and left to bleed. The creature stands over him, growling as it looks around at those nearby.

Stjepan winds up and brings his flail down with a roar. The creature was unprepared for this new opponent the head of the flail strikes it in the head, knocking it back to the ground, bleeding out.

Silvana looks at Orion "you might want to go take care of him"
Alice looks around to check for any other dangers as she keeps her shield at the ready. She then looks to Orion and nods, "Yeah he looks like he could use your help." She was all out of healing spells now, so there was little she could do.
Orion goes over to Smythyly and uses several lay upon hands on him to heal him up, "There we go should as good as new now."
Under Orion's help, Smythly begins to come back to it. He blinks his eyes a few times and then he says, "Well. That was... did I see Reos?"
The area is quiet, the dusk making for an almost pretty scene, if not for the dead bodies and blood everywhere.
"...let's take a look in that cave," says Smyhtly, "We need to make sure there aren't more of them."
Orion shrugs to Smythly, "You were only down for a few seconds, we got to you quickly." He then nods to what Smythly says.
Alice nods slightly as she looks over to Smythly, "Also they might of been keeping secret loot they stole inside of the cave, so it is probably worth looking anyway."
Once Smythly heads into the cave, he finds a small hollow, with a couple dead goats in it, though not drained of blood, and an egg.
"Oh dear," says Smythly, "There's an egg in here," he calls back out to the others. "This must be one of their young. I say we take it with us and give it to the Progressive Arcanists. They might know what best to do with it." He's not particularly eager to smash an egg.

Alice shrugs slightly, "Well I don't think vampires lay eggs, so I guess that kind of answers that question. I suppose it is worth looking into to see if they are native or if someone released them into the area or created them even."
"I think Reos would frown on destruction," says Smythly, firmly, "Let us take the egg tback to tue authroties on such matters. Though, clearly, these creatures wer edangerous and violent. I'm nto sure what they were." He calls back. He goes to take the egg.
The egg puts up no resistance and doesn't appear to be particularly delicate, easily picked up and carried out of the cave.
Orion does not have much to say, as Alice and Smythly debate on what they want to do.
Alice nods slightly, "Well lets tell the farmer what we found, then we can head back to the city."
"Yes, I agree," says Smyhtly, twitching one ear as he does. "We've a lot of ground to cover. Thank you, all of you, for keeping me from dying."
The trip back to the farm is uneventful, though the sun has set by the time you get back. The farmer listens to the tale of what happened and seems very happy to have things resolved, even if he has no idea what those things were either. He offers you a place to spend the night, so you can head out in the morning. He has just one more request. He'd like you to take a wagon to town, full of crates of apples, and find his son to let him deliver them. Once that's taken care of, his son will be able to pay you for the great deed you've done for him and his family.
The next morning, the trip back to ton is peaceful, his son is easily found. He takes the cargo with a promise to pay you once he's delivered the goods and received payment. True to his word, everyone is rewarded and the apple baked good are lentiful once again.
The Progressive Arcanists are willing to take the egg and study it. Their experts are able to idenitify it after just a bit of referencing some of their books. Given the egg and your descriptions, they are able to identify the creatures as chupacabra, fairly uncommon but quite a problem for farms when they get settled.
"I am glad we could help you, citizens," says Smythtly, warmly. "Be well, friends, and do not hesitate to ask us if your apples are ever in danger again!"
