- Summary: Elleandra is strolling on the banks of the Tornmawr when she notices a strange sight. Three people who seem to be walking into the river. She goes over to investigate as they are met by someone who emerges from the water, who isn't a mermaid but swims like one. It turns out that Merek, Cryosanthia, Braelnoir are considering travelling to the Plane of Water, and have asked Amythyst, an aquatic mage, to help them with kiddie steps. Elleandra bows out as the others strip armour for swimming, tie up, spell up, and dive down. Water breathing, even with a spell, takes some adjustment. Cryo is a natural, being a sith-makar, Braelnoir's new form might be, but she panics and has to be reassured by Cryo and Merek, who is also taking things in stride. They follow the underwater shelf down to the bottom, where there are wrecks and rusting armour. Before they have much time to adjust, Something seems to be stealing them away and Amythyst signals them to surface. They had stumbled across an Elder Water Elemental. Amythyst swims away to check it out, leaving the three to contemplate their experiences and Cryo's lack of language ability.

In the shadow of the great Highbridge, and beneath the guardhouses, a stretch of river has been laid out as a public park and fishing area. Here, the descending landscape of Alexandria folds into the river and crafts a comfortable view. On a typical day, a number of small boats and picnic blankets dot the landscape. To the side, a small shrine to Rada the River Serpent, as well as a dual shrine to Althea and Daeus, in their guise as Mother and Father of the world.

The weather is fairly calm, but the river is not quite as calm. It doesn't have roaring waves, but it's not completely still either. If anyone looks hard enough, they'll find a small shrine underneath the bridge. Otherwise...there's nothing to say that anyone is here.....
As one prone to wandering, it's not entirely unusual for Elleandra to end up following the river. At least when the wind isn't biting cold. Today, she's following a rather meandering path along the shore, occasionally stopping to stare out over the waters, or stoop down and try her hand at skipping a rock along it's surface.
Cryosanthia is down by the banks. She has dragged along a couple partners in crime. She is wearing her usual clothes: leather armor, a hat, and sandals. Underdressed for the time of year again. She has a bundle of stuff with her, primarily what look like blankets or towels. The sun is still at a good height in the sky.
"Ok Merek. Have you brought everything for all of us? If we're going to do this Plane of Water thing, this has got to be easier than there. Now, Amythyst said... splash in the river and she'll know? I guess we can try that first."
The white-scale sith completely misses the shrine beneath the bridge. She glances at Braelnoir, then finds some open water near the bank and splashes her foot in it. "Come out come out wherever you are."
Merek makes his way along with the team, his boots on, with his longcoat pulled about him, belt keeping his things upon it. He maneuvers to the water while he splashes that with his belted boot, gloved hands taking a moment to smooth back his attire which is getting a little bit wet. He nods then to Cryo and to Brae, "Looks like it! I brought what I can! She will probably have a lot of the more useful things!"
The splashing gets Elleandra's attention. It's unusual to see people touch the water. It's also unusual to see more than two people together on her walks here. Curious. She finds herself not quite staring, but not exactly /not/ staring, either. Laughing softly at herself, takes hold of one of her braids with her left hand and starts flicking the tip of it against the palm of her right.
Braelnoir is dressed in her post-dart finery, seemingly indifferent to the cold. She's looking around with a sort of wary air as a matter of course, but, she catches Cryo's glance with an arched eyebrow. She approaches the edge of the river with a 'hmm' and, for the first time since she started wearing a dress again, she wades awkwardly into the water.
After the pair of splashes....it only takes a few seconds before.....someone surfaces. "Hey Cryosanthia. What's up?" She says as she starts to swim over to the bank and walk her way out. Despite the weather...after she gets out of the water, she doesn't shiver. Braelnoir has reconnected.
"Peace on your..." Cryosanthia looks at the river. Well, potentially... "your Nest, Amythyst. Merek wants to go to the plane of water. This one thinks we should try swimming in a river first, and you said you might need help... washing the river. So we are here."
She smiles brightly, mouth a little open. Her cape flutters behind her and she seems suitably dramatic as she points at the mage, "Merek! Tell Amythyst what you think we would need, to swim here safely so she can check your ideas."
The palescale also watches the silver chimera wade right in. She keeps an eye on her, in case.
Merek looks between the people, "Well, we don't plan to go into the water directly from the beginning, we'd need at least planar adaptation that or a little assistance with the water breathing," he says, nodding, while he looks to Amythyst. "I am wanting to look into a bit of research, which will likely include Outsiders."
Braelnoir stumbles a few times, and seems slightly vexed by the odd play of her hooves in the water, though as the group is met by the woman from the other night, she raises a paw with a casual, "Hey."
Elleandra finds herself talking to, well.. herself. It's an old habit of one who spent much of her adult life with nobody around. "Now there's something you don't see every day," she comments, a small smile curving her lips. She moves a bit closer, taking some care to not get too close. She can't make out what anyone is saying from where she is, but with her keen eyes she can notice the lack of impact the elements have on the swimming girl, and the way everyone seems to be moving closer to the water. Which is odd, and from her perspective, a bit alarming.
"Well....Not only do you need the ability to breathe underwater...but also be able to move freely. That's the key there." Amythyst then looks to Elleandra. "Hello. You want to come in as well?"
"This one can swim." Cryosanthia says, adjusting so she can see everyone. Even the distant Elleandra from the corner of her eye. She's wary about people suddenly coming up on her. "I can hold my breath for 4 minutes, and the cold does not bother me overly much. I am not sure about the others."
She looks out at the rough waves, the grey water, the distance to the other bank, "I would be uncertain, about trying to swim across that. I feel safe enough near the shore. I am not sure about the others. I asked Merek to bring what we need, but ... did you bring water breathing potions? I brought rope. Here! Braelnoir tie this... oh... come here."
Cryo uncoils a rope from the bundle of things she brought.
"I don't have any with me, I can prepare the spells if you would like," Merek says, with a nod to Cryo as well, then he thinks about it a little bit. "First thing is first, let's see what Amythyst can do for all of us!"
Elleandra looks up when Amythyst calls out to her. Walking over to see just what is going on, she has to ask. "To come in? The water?" She looks a bit incredulous, really. "I am fairly hardy in some ways, but I'm not much for a swimmer, especially in currents like this. Aren't you at least a little cold?" She finds herself examining Amythyst closely, trying to remember if she's ever come across someone who made their home in a river before.
Braelnoir shrugs helplessly, "Its never been a strength, most o'my campaigns have been landlocked, an' I've been wearing a fair amount of weight in gear since I's a kid, umm.. Right now, cold doesn't seem to be a thing, though." As Cryo offers to tie her up, she shrugs and folds her paws over her head they're out of the way, not sure how the sith intends to do this.
Amythyst says, "I'd prepare, at least, three." She says to Merek. "If you want to keep some clothes dry...set them by the shrine there." She says pointing to the shrine under the bridge. "Water breathing is necessary if you're gonna stay under as long as I do." She then looks to Elleandra, who seems to stay back...and she shrugs. "I should note that I'm going to be a lot faster than you are underwater."" Cryo ties the rope in an X around Braelnoir's torso with the knot in the back, then plays out the rope to its end and knots a similar harness around herself. "This is so you can pull me up if I go to deep." She tells the chimera.
She looks next to Merek and Amythyst, "Three. Do you have any prepared?"
The sith grins at Amythyst, "Yes! I would expect that. Swimming in Am'shere is different than here. I suppose I can leave my armour in the shrine."
"Peace on your nest, I'm Cryosanthia." The white-scale tells Elleandra.
Elleandra isn't sure just what they are doing, but is at least going to watch. If a bit warily. She has seen all of sorts of weird things in her travels. This will be something to add to the list. She just has to ask, "So.. you are going to go into the river. Whatever for?" She's not sure if she should be worried or not at this point.
Merek takes a moment to adjust his longcoat, then he transforms that piece into the scarf which he wears, while he takes a moment to consider folk. Then he nods to Amythyst, "Do you want me to put the magic on people?" he asks.
Amythyst says, "They're planning a trip to a place that is all water....and they need the experience in the water before they go." She says to Elleandra before looking to Merek. "Yes please. Yourself, Cryosanthia, and this person." She says gesturing to braelnoir. "You all need experience underwater. I'll e teaching you how not to panic underwater. Among other things." She then tilts her head. "I don't need that spell, because I can already breathe underwater.""
Braelnoir cants her head a little and introduces herself, "Braelnoir... an.. I'm guessin' ya'd be Amethyst?" the chimera replies casually. She'll never admit that it makes a difference to her, but she is a little glad to still be considered a 'person'. Thank you placcard! "Z'at happen a lot, people freakin' out underwater?"
"So is it shallow getting deeper in all places, or are there artifical banks and walls where it drops fast?" Cryo asks, as the Tornmawr certainly has it in places, but she's not sure where. "How do we learn not to panic. Underwater?"
Definitely a slight pause in that sentence. The sith is unbuckling her armour pieces.
"A place that is all water," muses Elleandra. She will just let that one go, not wanting to pry too much here. "Well, I hope you all know what you are doing. Good luck and may peace favor you wherever you go." She offers a polite curtsey with the blessing and takes a step back to watch a bit longer.
"It's rather shallow for a bit out.....until about 15 feet, before it drops off a cliff and it gets really deep really fast. There are some shelves, but to use them, you have to know where they are." Amythyst says before looking to Braelnoir. "That's what we're doing. The main reason people panic at first.....is the physical act of breathing water. Even I did it at first." She then looks to everyone, except Elleandra, who seems to have stepped away. "Everyone ready?"
Merek nods a bit, then he begins to place water breathing upon all the people, except to Amythyst. It looks like he asks for each of them to place a piece of straw in their mouth, while he nods, then he places a leather on his wrist, while he begins to use another magic spell on himself. Then he nods to Amy.
Cryo nods, taking the piece of straw in her mouth, "Okay, I'm ready. This should be interesting."
She has also removed her armour, stacking it with the blankets. She adjusts her harness.
Amythyst nods quietly to Cryosanthia and Merek....then checking on Braelnoir...she starts to lower herself into the water. Once fully submerged....she seems to wait at the edge of the shelf. The strange thing is that now....after a hard exhalation, sending up bubbles from her mouth....she seems to be breathing to water now....and it seems she also has tattoos upon her body, including lines on the sides of her neck.....
Braelnoir does as bidden and only slightly feels foolish. She looks around some and, noticing she's being more studiously regarded, she takes a breath and starts to wade out into the water. It doesn't bother her at first, but... she's still holding her breath.... Kaelyn has left.
Merek looks then to Brae, while he places a hand upon her shoulder, "It's alright, be a bit calm. You need to know, the magic, it will assist you. Walk in and don't even imagine the water as there. You will know it is when you do, but don't think about it." He does smile, then he nods to Cryosanthia, a woman probably a lot more familiar with that kind of place, being white dragon. He then nods to Amythyst while he follows, though he manages to make it look easy. Those that know a bit of spellwork will notice he used Freedom of Movement, making a way about in the water with his usual ability, adjusting to swimming!
Cryosanthia walks over to the water. With her armour off, all her tattoos are visible, and she has a lot of them. She steps carefully into the water, not hesitating as it rises up her legs to her waist. Those lines on Amythyst's neck draw her attention, and she watches them. She seems to be holding her breath habitually, and following along. "It'll be fine Braelnoir, try to relax. There's a sensation, when you move and your scales lift up, and the cold water gets under them. Focus on that."
Amythyst is still guiding them out into the water....basically asking them to submerge themselves in the water. Once there, she looks at each of them....opens her mouth, and makes hand gestures.....basically telling them to exhale the air in their lungs....then gesturing to inhale. Apparently this is the part where she teaches them NOT to panic in the water.
GAME: Merek rolls will: (2)+17: 19 GAME: Braelnoir rolls will: (4)+1: 5
Braelnoir, in her short, mercenary life, has encountered many harrowing challenges that could be construed as facing her fears. She's been surrounded by fire. She's been captured by a vengeful enemy, she'd has her body transformed, she's lost someone she... someone special to her... And here, now... she discovers she has one she hadn't met, before. Glub.... breathe..... FULL SPECTRUM FREAKOUT.
Merek maneuvers up to where Brae is, while he offers a light supplication which might offer a supernatural calm to the woman, "It's alright, listen to what Cryosanthia is saying," he says. He does look like he is keeping away from freaking, though he does take a moment. He will keep that prayer while the sith-makar guides the woman through this, perhaps together Brae can be calmed, with a nod to Amythyst. It's his first time in water like this, though he's trying!
Cryosanthia is watching her friends. She hasn't exhaled her breath yet, watching to see them do it first. This is similar enough for her she isn't panicking, and different enough she's cautious. The visibility is great! The depth and current, disconcerting. She's used to slow moving jungle rivers, which have their bad spots, but rarely are deep enough for transport ships.
Merek speaking underwater is a bit of a shock. "I can talk like this?" Well, might as well breathe the rest of her air out, so she does, blowing bubbles and moving so she can hold onto Braelnoir's arm and touch her back. She rubs, attempting to demonstrate inhaling the water. The first breath is the hardest, it's so heavy, cold.
Amythyst smiles and gestures to Cryosanthia. She's still floating there, treading water underwater while everyone sorts themselves out. She backs up a bit more....but a little bit further out, and she points down. those who look down see she's pointing at the edge of the shelf they're on. Seems she doesn't talk underwater.....
Braelnoir isn't long under the fears, though she churns up quite a few bubbles as she's touched, at first, thankfully too discombobulated at first to thrash with her claws out. She catches on quick enough, however and soon, settles down with an.. odd expression. She.... honest to gods, even clears her throat, but says nothing before she lets the others guide her down.
Merek nods a bit when all seem to be managed, with a look to Amythyst. Then he's following along with the woman, "Your voice won't travel as far, if you know Aquan it's ideal in this place."
"I don't. That's good Braelnoir. The water is hard to push in and out, so every breath is a deep one. Relax into it." Cryosanthia instructs. She turns and swims towards Amythyst. Her swimming relies heavily on her tail, she lets her arms and legs flow with the current and sweeps her tail from side to side, powering herself forward. It's slow, but effective. The rope between her and Braelnoir plays out, getting to the point where it will be taut when the sith gets to the underwater shelf.
Amythyst smiles as they take their first breaths underwater. It's only now that Amythyst completely flips herself upside down and swims deeper, and with an agility that even most fast running animals can muster. She seems completely comfortable underwater.....Those that can understand Aquan can actually hear Amythyst yell out 'WOOHOOOO!' as she dives deeper.....
Braelnoir isn't fully ready to venture fully into the talking in water, yet, though, she gives a not to Cryo before she glances between her companions and with several flexes of her 'fingers' punctuated with several 'slaps' against her either thigh, "bleep bleep blah blah blrgl blah" Of course, with her slightly dimminished dexterity, it crimps her lingo, but, follow she does... if.... ugh, yeah, swimming is not her gift. <unknown>
Merek offers a little thumbs up to Brae, while he notes that he understands. Then he follows along with Amythyst the same one might upon land, although not fast like the woman. Then he's translating with handspeech while he speaks along to Amythyst, "dribble splat splat blut bubble dribble dribble splat" <unknown>
The sith has seen those gestures before, from others, and still doesn't understand them. She nods, indicating the ledge, tugging on the rope as she looks back. Hopefully her voice will carry, "Breathe, relax, be ready."
She faces forward. let's see how deep this goes, Cryo thinks as she cruises underwater. Stretched out, nose pointed, she feels the current flow over her, hugging all parts of her body.
She glides over the edge, and down.
Amythyst smiles to Merek. "bubble dribble splat bubble dribble blut blut splat bubble bibble splat blut" The deeper they go...someone might notice that there's a small place to sleep on a shelf before they go much deeper. And Cryosanthia can start to see remnants of boats start to litter the shelves....until...soon..they see the bottom...and it's pretty dark, but they can barely make out sunken boats, trash of all sorts, including rusted swords, armor, shields...more.
Those who can see in the darkness can see....one of the armor suddenly lift off the floor and jet south at a very VERY rapid pace...... <unknown>
The palescale sith can see in the dark. The shelf is interesting, she swims on down, towing Braelnoir at the length of the rope. There's a lot to see on the bottom, the number of swords is a little surprising.
As an armour piece jets away, her head whips to follow it. She spreads out, hanging in the water, ready to fight.
Dark vision is another capacity Brae's transformative roulette has not yielded unto her, though, unbeknownst to her, she does have the secondary eyelids that slid into place as she submerged. She pitifully flails overhand strokes with her paws as she is dragged along like a bizarre kite on the end of Cryo's rope, her tails starting to synch with her kicking.
Merek nods a bit to Amythyst, while he takes a moment to consider it. "blut" he says. A look then to the team while he makes a few motions the he lights an underwater lantern which he keeps, then he mouths the words well underwater, along with sign language, <Amythyst is sorceress of the sea.> He then spins a little while he begins speak a word of magic, then he lights a dancing light for Brae. A little nod with Cryo while he looks to that figure, "blut blut" he asks as well. <unknown>
Amythyst sees it, but not how Cryosanthia sees it. She turns her head then as Cryosanthia stops, she holds out her hand to Cryo....as if to say 'stop'...Then she swims downwards to where the armor moved initially and looks about for a bit. She does shrug and gestures for them to come down....
Cryo keeps looking in the direction it vanished, but there's nothing to see. She streamlines and dives down to where Amythyst is waiting, pulling her kite after her. Landing, her feet sink into the riverbed, raising some silt and mud as she takes a grip. Waiting for guidance, she reels the rope in, bringing Braelnoir down to her side.
She looks closely at the chimera's eyes, noting the membrane on them, unsure how it's helping her.
She remembers she can speak, "What was that? Is this what you are cleaning?"
Braelnoir coasts to a... float as she is pulled close to Cryo. Her paw pat-pats the sith's side, then shrugs, a perplexed look on her face.
Merek nods to the light with Brae as well as Cryo, keeping close enough he can keep the spell, while he follows along with Amythyst. His lantern is up, like Brae he can not see without it, as such he will probably need a bit before he can see what she sees.
When Merek brings the lantern up....he doesn't see much, because most of the fish bolt as soon as the light turns on. It's a part of the river where the light means death. However, Cryosanthia....and Amythyst....notice something along the same lines as before. A hammer begins to lifts off the river floor....and then it spins south rather quickly. They can feel the water moving, but it's not pulling anyone else into it.
Amythyst tilts her head a bit....and stares at the whirlpool for a few seconds....then nods her head. She then taps Cryosanthia on the shoulder....and points up. She then begins to swim up herself.
Cryosanthia gets the message. Whatever that is, it's not safe for novice explorers, especially when they weren't planning on a confrontation. She leans in close to Braelnoir, so she doesn't have to speak loudly, and hopefully the chimera has enough underwater, low-light vision that Cryo isn't appearing like some monster out of the depths. "Keep an eye, keep the rope choked so you're close. Follow the bubbles."
She winds enough of the rope into Braelnoir's grip that she'll be only a few feet behind her. Enough for her tail-wash to generate a decent push without turning into drag on the chimera. Cryosanthia swims upwards. It's slow going, she paddles somewhat with her hands and feet, but her movement comes from the sideways undulations along her body, and her powerful tail.
She heads up the undersea wall.
Braelnoir blinks at that, but nods to Cryo, clapping her paws together twice in quick succession, "sandy". She is glad of the little fairy light Merek's given her, and is slightly less of a load on the way back up as she does what she can for her own propulsion, though with such a mishmash of features, she's kind of a soup sandwich in the water after Amythyst sounds the withdrawl. She'll ask when their wrapped in air, again. <unknown>
Merek looks up to the party, with a nod while he begins to swim that way along, taking the time to do it right.
It's not too long before they reach the top most shelf before Amythyst walks her way up to the shore and takes a deep breath of air. She takes a couple more before she looks to the emerging companions. "heh. You just saw an Elder Water Elemental...."
Cryo uses her hands on the wall, pulling herself up, and pushing off each shelf until she reaches the top where she can stand. She turns, to give Braelnoir a hand up, so she can stand. The cold water streams off her body as she walks to shore. She starts to speak, and can't, holding up her hand. She leans and stretches out her neck, then heaves out all the water in her lungs in a long gush. This is followed by a cough, and another inhale. She grunts, "Transitions."
Now she can answer Amythyst, "That's what that was? I was not seeing much beyond it's touch. It was unsettling. Are you two Ok, Braelnoir? Merek? I assume you are fine but I will ask anyhow. Come." Cryo leads her way to the shore.
Braelnoir uses the wall as much as she can as well, feeling a little more comfortable that way, though it's only as they emerge, and she spends a moment hacking her own lungs clean that she can bring herself to ask... well, by then the Sith has taken care of that, so, instead she answers, "I'll keep, luv." She looks waterward for Merek to emerge, then follows her leash to shore. She's... probably a little embarassed, yet.
Merek lifts up from the water, while he nods a bit to Amy, then he takes a moment to look to his attire, beginning to weave a spell which keeps the wet away. Then he takes a moment to look to Cryo and Brae, "Alright." Then he's pointing the fingers about to clean up water from that attire of the party, except Amy.
"A Water Elemental in water...no, you're not going to see much more than it's touch. Like a fire elemental in fire, or earth elemental in earth, and so forth." Amythyst then stretches. "And.....that's what I've been helping in the river. But for now, I'm going to go to sleep. Hope it wasn't too harrowing to be down there."
"It was more water than I'm used to. I've not often been swimming where I couldn't see the sides, bottom and surface. Right after I first dove down, all edges vanished, nothing out to the limits of my vision, only the rope tying me to Braelnoir. I did enjoy it. Thank you for the experience." Cryosanthia explains, untying the rope around herself, then going to address the knot on the chimera. "What were your thoughts Braelnoir?"
Braelnoir gives a fidget and scratches at the back of her neck at the question, "Was differ'nt." she says briefly, "Definately gonna need a better way t'move, though."
Merek nods a bit while thinking about it, then he sighs, "I will need a little nap, I will bring you your sleeves coming up later today. Both should be completed!"
Cryosanthia stands close to Braelnoir, watching her face. Having finished undoing the knots, she's now coiling the rope up. "Movement is hard, I dislike how slow I am. It's an environment I can function in, but not well. It is important, in strange waters to swim with a buddy. Perhaps you should have been tied to Amythyst and me to Merek, but they did not offer and I needed someone. Maybe the spell he used, comes on a ring."
The sith looks at Merek, in case he's going to offer more information. She gets on dry, frozen land and picks up her bundle. She wraps herself in one of them, and holds out towels and blankets in case the others want. "No sense walking naked through Alexandria."
Merek looks between the two in thought, then he nods, "Well, I imagine there's a magic item for it, in addition to the potion. I will make the potions while I work on the meanwhile," he says. He does take a towel which he uses to clean his face, his magic mainly useful only for his attire. "I apologize, I would've offered. I probably am a bit newer to this than Cryosanthia though. I know the magic, I just never actually used it before like that." He does offer a little pat for his friends as well.
Braelnoir frowns and nods, "We used to run pairs in hostile areas, tryin' ta keep a low profile. You see what he doesn't." is her commentary on the buddy system, though, to the rest, "I'll need some more practice in case the magic has limits. And... Cryo, I know Merek knows Merctalk, but d'you?"
Now it's Cryo's turn. She looks away, tugs her blanket tighter. Her tail flicks around somewhere lost in the volume of cloth. "No. I'm not smart at languages."
Her tail flicks again, it seemingly a sore point, a Speaker should be better.
Merek looks then to Cryo and nods a bit then to Brae, "She can teach you. If you need any pointers I work as a linguist."
Hrm. Brae seems a little awkward on that response, but, with Merek's input, she nods, "I can teach you a couple of basic signs, at least enough to recognize trouble if I'm trying to be relatively quiet. It works better with hands."
The palescale sith who doesn't feel cold pulls her blanket a tighter. She looks at the ground. "Yes. I see. I meant kindness but it highlighted your flaws and made you uncomfortable. This one apologies. I will learn hand sign another time, I have something to do now."
She turns and leaves the other two at the shore.
