PRP: Monkey Business
MOnkey Business: Run by: Renfrey Players: Aldean, Corra, Abrahil, Godwyn, Lothos, Rhar Two CR 9 encounters.
The instructions for the job are simple! Meet and escort the contact on a scientific expedition, the airship leaves at dawn! Simple as can be, right? When the troupe of adventurers arrive at the venerable airship called 'Bugger off or else.' You are all greeted by a squeeky voice "Well get on already! We are about to set off!" the source of the voice is not immediately obvious until... yes.. There is a small monkey, wearing khaki pants and shirt, beckoning the crew on board. "I am Dr Ook! And we travel for excitement! For adventure! For SCIENCE!" he proclaims in a loud squeeky voice.
Corra looks a little confused for a moment as she spies the one of the voice and then shakes her head a bit. She moves to get on the airship, muttering to herself, "Remind me to read the fine print on the job postings."
Lothos chuckles and nods. He heads up onto the ship "For once i have a great feeling about this job."
Rhar and Gurr are here. More flying ship! They bound on board, then look around for the voice. When they spot it, Rhar waves paws. "Hi!" While Gurr considers simian recipes. And drools.
Where has Aldean heard FOR SCIENCE before? Oh. Right. The bard's expression as he ... surveys ... the airship and their employer is best described as hooded, although there's a twitch near his left eye. Shouldering his pack and bow, he looks up at Corra. "That makes two of us, lass," he tells her before resignedly clambering aboard.
"Oh--oh! Why, you're just as tall as I am! Or as--oh my, how exciting!" The round, elderly little gnome clasps his hands in excitement as he sees the monkey. "How exciting, you know! Though I don't think I've a bit of a tail," he says, and sort of wades his way around in a circle, to wobble and wibble his bottom. "Oh, no--so, you've one up on me there, I'm afraid. ...but oh, it's a delight to meet you, such a delight!" he says. He beams at Dr. Ook, and then smiles at the rest of them. It's time for ADVEEENNNTUUUUUURE! Well. A monkey. A talking monkey. Margaret could say she's seen stranger, but then she'd be lying, and lying is bad. So she doesn't. Instead, she gives the monkey an only very slightly strained smile, and looks around for any sources of shenanigans, like men with strangely unmoving mouths or the like. When none make themselves known, she finally gives up. "P-pleased to meet you," she stammers, and shuffles aboard, all but giving the monkey the side-eye. She's already regretting this. You can tell by the set of her shoulders. They're very expressive.
Once everyone is on board Dr Ook stands on top of a box to adress the adventurers, next to him is the gnome captain with a grimace that could curdle milk. "Ladies and Gentleman! We set out to track down the legendary fruit of ambrosia! Captain, take her out!" he proclaims pointing to the sky while the snarling captain grumbles under his breath and gives the command for the ship to set off.
Godwyn places a hand over her mouth in a polite attempt not to laugh. If anything, this is going to be the most adorable escort mission she's ever had to take on. Godwyn gives a glance toward Margaret and gave her a nod, hopefully to reassure her.
Lothos frowns slightly. "The fruit of ambrosia? What is this?"

"Rhar eat fruit! Fruit good!" Gurr also eats fruit. Sometimes. But he prefers protein to carbs. So he can watch his wolfish figure. Margaret is clutching her staff to her and trying very hard not to look completely put off by the whole affair. She's even plastered a smile on her face! It only looks slightly strained. "The... fruit of whatnow?" Spotting Godwyn, the diminutive priestess sort of sidles sidelong towards her and gives her a wide eyed What-The-Heck-Is-Going-On kind of look. Clearly she hasn't been an adventurer for very long.
"Oh--you know, I've always wanted to ask," asides the gnome in a Conspiratorial Whisper to Dr. Ook at some point, "What is it like, to have a tail? It seems such a marvelous thing...but oh, rather like it might get caught in doors...why, it would be terrible, wouldn't it? But oh! How Exciting! It seems forever and a day since I've been on an airship. You always go to the most delightful of places. I can only imagine the fruit is one such thing, you know." Abrahil looks as pleased as punch to be going on an adventure, monkey or no. He beams at Rhar, too. "Oh, I just bet it's exciting!"
You paged Rhar with 'You heard a rumor a while back about some island with a strange exotic fruit, said to be able to feed many people.'
GAME: Margaret rolls knowledge/nobility: (12)+7: 19 GAME: Corra rolls knowledge/nature: (9)+12: 21
You paged Lothos with 'Some time ago a group of merchants had stumbed on an island with something they called 'The Fruit of Ambrosia' that could feed many people. However any attempts to transplant it have failed.'
GAME: Corra rolls Knowledge/History+1: (12)+7+1: 20
You paged Aldean with 'Several years ago there was an merchant expdition out to the Jade Islands for new trade routes that had stumbled upon an island with said fruit.'
Corra cocks her head to the side as she listens and tries to think if she knows anything about what the monkey is talking about. Meanwhile she settles back for the flight, to watch.
You paged Margaret with 'There was a well known wizard 'Lord Rutherferd' in the Acadamy that was part of some kind of expedition some years ago, found some special fruit. However he had apparantly gone quite insane for some unrelated reason... the money might be his familiar.'
You paged Corra with 'Some years ago an expedition set out the Jade Islands for new trade route that returned with news of a new island with strange fruit.'
Right@! Monkeys have tails! Rhar leans over to look behind Dr. Ook. To examine the tail now that Abrahil brought it up. Gurr has a tail, of course, but Rhar doesn't. Usually, her Cyootie, the Bane of Night, has more than enough tales for the both of them.
Lothos seems to think for a moment "Are you talking about whats on that island?"
Interestingly, Aldean actually visibly brightens at the mention of fruit of ambrosia, although he's still shaking his head at the monkey. "Jade Islands, eh? Might not be so bad after all." He flashes a grin at Godwyn, and then at Margaret before moving towards the middle of the ship to prepare for takeoff.
Corra raises a brow, "Well going to be a long trip then." she says and chuckles a little.
You paged Godwyn with 'Sorry, what you know: There was a wizard in high standing called Lord Rutherfurd who had claimed to have found an extic fruit to feed the masses, however he soon after had lost his mind to another unrelated event and nothing ever came from it. However you do seem to recall he had a monkey familiar.'
Abrahil would twist around to look at his own behind, but such gymnastics are beyond him! Still, the tail is an interesting proposition--and concept! "Do you know," he says to Rhar, "Oh! Why, the wondrous things you could do with them, I think. Why, lift a glass, an extra cup of tea!" He gives a shiver at the thought of it, a shiver that sends his belly a jiggle, like a touch of dough. "An extra pen, do you think, and oh, such wonder. ...oh, I do worry it might get caught in doors, though. Does...does his?" he asks, with a nod towards Gurr. ...and then pauses, eyes twinkling, and whispers, "I'd long ago resolved to have fun on these trips. Oh, why. It's my secret to long life, you know. A secret!"
Godwyn takes a moment to stare at the monkey... and then something in her head clicks. Still, she doesn't move toward the monkey. Instead she heads toward Margret and kneels next to her. "Stay close to me. I won't let anything happen to you."
Dr Ook seems to suddenly be wary of getting his tail grabbed but will gladly fill Rhar and Abrahil in on the complex proclivities of having a tail in today's society and how the tailless-centric peoples of Alexandria discriminate agains those with tails, not showing the understanding and care one must take around a tail. He is well learned and very opiniated. None the less the airship flies on with plenty of time for lectures on the flaws of a tailless-centric society.
Margaret has disconnected.
The trip is quite long but after some days the airship finaly arrives at a jungle island and sets down carefuly on a sandy beach, the captain grumble something about only staying for two days in accordance to his contract. Dr Ook is undisturbed however and starts walking down the beach pointing at the jungle with his walking stick. "Shall we my good fellows?! To adventure!" he says in that squeeky simian voice.
Lothos has thrown a few readings during the trip, and apparently feels things will be very exciting. "This is going to be great, much better than the last time I was on an island with the Sphinx and the Mummy prince. Of course, thats not that bad either after that whole haunted castle, I truely dislike the undead. So, no undead on this trip, let us all hope."
Corra nods her head as she looks at the jungle, "Why couldn't it just be a forest, don't know much about jungles." she shakes her head but she does pull her bow, always good to be ready and moves, "Am I one of the scouts?" she asks as she looks at the others.
The second of Aldean's cloaks has long since gotten tucked away in his pack, leaving only a dove-grey one with arcane symbols. Likewise with the gloves, hat and other accoutrements of cold weather, to be replaced with much lighter clothing beneath the armor. He seems to be in high good spirits himself as he treads down the beach. "Be thinkin' first o' vines an' lizards, mate," he tells Lothos, looking back.

Rhar and Gurr bound out excitedly. After days, they actually ran out of new things to look at in the ship. So they got bored. And miserable. So they're excited to get off. "Watch for vines looking like lizards! Or lizards made of vines!"
"How daring, you know. ...oh! Lizards...how dreadful...and vines, why, they're always there to trip on, you know? Though...oh, why, I admit, I did take a swing on them from time to time as a child...did you ever do that, Corra?" Abrahil asks. He smiles warmly, the elderly little fellow does, and clasps his hands together. "It was such a treat. And oh, oh. An extra set of eyes would be useful, if you don't terribly mind."
Corra shakes her head, "Not really vines to swing from in the Vast." she says and shakes her head a bit. She looks around a little and then nods, "Seems alright here, but I am sure that will change once we get deeper."
Godwyn straightens her features and clears her throat. "The less said of Dragonier, my dear Lothos, the better. Shall we?" She made her way off the ship, last of the bunch to ensure everyone was on solid ground.
The going is fairly easy at first, just some stray vines and plants to go through or around however despite that Dr Ook quickly trailed behind and lets the bigger folks take the lead. Few hours pass before the party comes out of the jungle to a small river, a murkly brown that completely obscures sight of the bottom the water. "Yes! My notes say we are on the right track! And that the river is only chest deep for one of you taller folk. Shall we?!" he says with a gleeful tone.

You paged (Aldean, Corra, Rhar, Abrahil, Godwyn) with 'You all notice that a little ways up a river a bunch of small splashes come from the water as a host of crocs slips into the water from a sandy bar.' = You paged Rhar with 'You also notice a very large set of eyes peeking up out of the water in the other direction. Quite a lot larger.'
Lothos looks around, looking at the trees on either side of the river, and judging distances. He then looks to Aldean, "I assume your thinking about the castle moat, cause I know I am."
Corra shakes her head a bit, "Great...large predators already. Should cross one or two at a time, so others may guard and drive them off should they come close." She points out where she saw some reptiles move into the river.
"Chest deep, huh?" Godwyn glances toward the river. Her eyes widen for a brief moment as she sees a scaly hide appear for a moment, then disappear beneath the river. "Just deep enough for us to get eaten, more like. Corra's idea is a good one about now, I think."
Aldean surveys the river, then shoots a look upstream. "Aye, th'same," he tells Lothos, "but I've a better anchor this time." Setting down his pack, he pulls from it a 50' length of silk rope and a finely carved metal rod that will be familiar to Abrahil. "Oy, anyone carryin' a second rope?" He looks around at the others.
Lothos empties his pack, having the 50 foot of silk rope included in his goblin army knife. "Covered." He then takes the other rope from Aldean. "So top and bottom, I'll anchor to trees on the other side. No one has to get wet."
"Oh..." Abrahil looks quite well, he looks a touch paler underneath that marshmallow skin. And then casts a quick glance upwards to Godwyn, "Why, I'd be swallowed alive! Well! Well..." he says, and straightens as best he can. "Well, it's onwards we go, isn't it?" To Aldean, "Oh, the methods for magical wings...but oh, no, I'm afraid not," he says. He reaches up to pat the bard's hand. Pat pat. Pat pat. "It's a bit heavy, you know. I'm just not as young as I used to be!"
"Lizards!" Rhar points upriver at splashes. Then she looks down the river, too. "And... eyes!" She points again. "Many thing in water! " Abrahil turns a touch paler at Rhar's words!

You paged (Corra, Aldean, Godwyn) with 'You do indeed see what Rhar was talking about, upstream (Opposite side of the crocodiles) you see a very large set of reptilian eyes on the water.
Aldean looks quickly upstream, and scowls blackly as he hands off the second rope to Lothos. "Aye, I see it. Oy, go high, mate, an' don't ferget we've small folk among us," he tells Lothos, with another glance up the river.
Lothos gets a good grip on his end of the ropes, then makes sure someones holding the other end. With that done, he lifts off the ground, flying across the river, high enough most things can't leap out to eat him. This is not fly fishing.
Corra watches the eyes and the reptiles with her bow ready for any sign of them getting close while preparations are being made.
Aldean has the other end of both ropes secured around his waist, and appears to be making to climb the nearest sturdy tree. He spares a glance for the creatures in the water, but his focus is on getting the group /over/ it.
Godwyn gives a nod as the bridge is built, then stretches her arms above her head. "I'm so glad the same trick works time and time again. It'd be a shame if we lost someone this early." With that, she joins Corra in watching for any stray chompers.
Dr Ook watches Lothos float across and nods "Oh excellent plan my good fellows. I would hate to be crocodile bait. Excellent indeed!" meanwhile the muddy waters of the river flow and swirl, hdiding whatever may be underneath.
Abrahil watches the witch take off, and then the various tricks with ropes and rods, most anxiously. For whichever reason, he keeps staring at the witch's hair. "You know...oh dear. I'd always wanted to invite a witch to tea," he whispers to no one in particular, "But I never know how many cups to set out, you know." With that, he does the best bit of straightening he can--which, perhaps is more a rearrangement and realignment of bulk. Actual straightening is hard to do. Still, he does his best and waddles over that way. And then wriggles his fingers shamingly at the crocodiles, "Don't even think about it...you!" he says.
Lothos secures his sides up on a tree, making sure its steady, then he lands and keeps an eye on his side of the river. "Alright folks, come join me...I dont want eaten alone here."
Rhar watches the ropes in between watching big eyes and looking for the gator crocs. "Go! Walk rope! Rhar, Gurr swim last!"
Alone? Right, good sentiment there.
Godwyn offers to be the first one on the bridge by climbing up and checking the stability of the ropes... then makes her attempt to shimmy her way across.

The gnome looks anxious, though does his best to swallow it. His smile trembles with each snap of the gators' jaws... "Ahem! Well...oh. Oh dear. Now, Gurr...stand still, please."
Moments later, a whirl and whorl of colors whoosh around Gurr. They sparkle, settling into his fur. They shimmer, and he begins to float above the ground.
Aldean watches Godwyn cross, then looks back at who's left. Abrahil appears to have found his own solution, which will likely cover Rhar as well, so his lips twitch into an amused smile. "Oy. Doctor," he calls to the monkey. "Up on me back, if ye would."

Nimbly enough, Aldean climbs up and starts across the rope, but about halfway across is when trouble starts. Althea's healing washes over Aldean, and he mutters, "Yer bad luck, lass, this don't happen when ye ain't here." The accent is thicker than usual, the baritone voice breathy, but it eases some. He's still not moving real well, and still appears to be in pain, but at least the shoulder appears to be in the right place now. He does begin to sing, a rich baritone that is only a little breathy, a rousing call to arms that echoes across the river to both sides of the bank and as far as he can project it out. With his good arm, he eases the bow on his back around the monkey and off of his shoulder, swearing softly as he does.

Godwyn grits her teeth as the jaws taken in Corra. "Come on..." One strike. Sparks fly again. "Come on...!" Another, and no give. "Damn you, let her GO!" She puts her anger behind this one.
The blade digs deep with a satisfying squelch. That... looked painful, even to *her*.
As the croc goes down Corra is released from the massive maw and the corpse of the giant croc is still partialy out of the river. Good news is though that it provided an adhoc bridge for the most of the distance.
A moment later, the elderly wizard pops! back into existence. There's a touch of sweat on his balding brow, a touch of pink. It gives him a sort of pinkish, cherry look. "Oh dear...oh! Oh, well done! Why, the bards will sing of this one, I'm sure. ...er. ...oh. Well, I'm sorry, dear fellow," to the crocodile. "But I'm just afraid we don't make a very good lunch." To the monkey, "Do you think this was any of that 'tail discrimination,' we'd been discussing?" he asks, earnestly.
Dr Ook still has a deathgrip on Aldean that he doesn't appear to be letting go of soon. "I... yes..." he finaly murmers.
Corra mutters as she gets to her feet and collects what arrows that she can and then starts to cross on the new bridge, "That hurt." she murmers.
"Well... Godwyn takes in a breath of somewhat-fresh air. "I think we should discuss all this after a head check." You know, to see if everyone still has their head in one fashion or another. "I'd like to see how much it hurt you, Corra, if you don't mind."
Lothos lands again on the proper side of the river. "Line up those that are hurt, and I'll do some of my special mumbo jumbo. No sense wasting other options until required."
"Oh! Well, you're absolutely right, then. Perhaps we'll speak to the Council about it, when we get back?" Abrahil does his best to wobble over to stand near the Doctor-Monkey and Aldean...and reaches up to pat the monkey's foot. He looks across at Godwyn then, and beams a beam that only the very old can. "Oh, you were wonderful, m'dear! A fine form, if I do say so, myself." Corra nods her head, "Whatever works, I have a little healing magic of my own, so keep that in mind if I need to use it." she offers.
And right now, that's probably the safest place for the good Doctor, even if it's not the most pleasant for Aldean. The rousing music dies away as he lets it fade, with a ghost of a grin for the elderly wizard. "This bard ain't, mate." Carefully, he slings the bow back over his shoulder, and he, too, watches Coora with concern as she crosses the bridge.
Godwyn makes her way back toward the shore, wading through the still-turbulent waters. "Ugh... all in the momentum. Just need to do it until it feels right." She climbs up and sees to Aldean first. "I'm going to assume we need to wrap those ribs up soon..."
Lothos will provide his special healing, it requires him to rub his hair on someone. Its just a cure moderate wounds, but its free once per day per person. "I bless thee." He says with a grin to anyone he heals.
<OOC> Renfrey says, "SO who am I healing?" <OOC> Renfrey says, "Or rather whose healing who? XD" <OOC> Abrahil says, "I think Lothos is healing anyone who is hurt once each?"
Already standing on his own, Aldean shakes his head, still looking at Corra to make sure she's okay before turning to move on. "Let's jes' get gone, mate." He's got one arm tucked up against him, but shakes his head as he sees the girl's deep wounds. "Look t'her first."
As the party moves farther into the jungle per Dr. Ook's notes they finaly emerge onto to a large clearing with a single green hill in the middle. Atop that hill however is a tree with very large fruit on it, a single bushel of enormous bananas hangs from a branch. "The Fruit of Ambrosia!" Dr' Ook bellows as he points. Indeed each banana appears to severela feat long, large fruit indeed.
<OOC> Renfrey says, "Perceptions please."
GAME: Abrahil rolls perception: (2)+3: 5

GAME: Lothos rolls perception: (5)+10: 15
Lothos looks up at the tree, shaking his head. "I got ten gold that says the tree tries to eat us." He glances at the rest of the group "Any takers?"
Corra cocks her head to the side as she glances around, "I won't take that bet, there aren't any animals here." she murmers, "Something is out of place."
"Aye." Aldean's been silent for a lot of the walk, after having eyed Abrahil with a mix of bemusement, flatteredness, and ... something else. Whatever it is he's pondering, it's not happy thoughts, but he's allowed Ook to ride on his back without comment. He does seem to be feeling better, and his now carrying his bow between his hands. "Sommat ain't right."
Abrahil does his best to get there--he huffs a little, he puffs a little. "Oh," he says, at the sight of the tree. And the bananas. "How beautiful!" he exclaims. He beams at the rest of them, and then adjusts his rose-tinted lenses, and looks back at the bananas. "Did the legends say anything about them?" he asks.
Godwyn blinks at the oversized banannas for a second, then gives a shrug. "Nothing's right with you, Aldean. It's eerie how accurate you are, though." She still has her sword drawn. "So I'm going to stand guard."
Lothos looks around, "Anyone want to shoot down a banana? See what happens?" He looks to anyone with a bow.
Dr Ook hops down from Aldean's back "They will make the most legendary smoothie... also if I can unlock the secret to their size and apply it to other fruit!" he says with excitement and starts towards the small hill.
"Oh! Dr. Ook, do hold!" cries Abrahil, in earnest. The round little fellow sweats a bit, and looks around quickly before continuing, "I do believe I can get them down without--erm. A touch safely?" he suggests. "Yes, safely, and oh dear! My dear, if you go that way, you'll be squished!"
<OOC> Aldean says, "That's a good question...and I think I'll use Lore Master for that. What legends /do/ surrround these fruits?" <OOC> Aldean says, "Lore Master lets me take 20 on a knowledge check once a day."
You paged Aldean with 'They are giant fruit, years ago another expedition found them and tried to plant seeds but it didnt work. Ook's wizard was in that expedition.'
Aldean considers Abrahil's question for several long moments, studying the massive bananas. "Ambrosia be jes' giant fruit, mate. Some years back another expedition found 'em, but they couldn't figure it out, word said," he explains before shooting Godwyn a /look/. "Plenty be right, lass," he shoots back with a grin. "Jes doesn't happen when ye be about." Dark eyes dance, a wicked cant to the grin with which he favors her.
Godwyn glances back at Aldean. "I consider it a chance to serve the Matron every time you get hurt." She grins. "So it's not my misfortune at all." She returns to scanning the surroundings for threats.
Lothos shrugs when no one takes his bet. "Alright, well, how are we to see if this thing is safe? Cause while I could use my hair, I think the tree will likely have a better range than me, and I'll get grabbed. Thats just how I see it."
"Oh, I can take care of it...I think. If you think this is dangerous, m'dears, though, we should move back, shouldn't we?" Abrahil clasps his hands together, once--and then looks towards the creeping Dr. Ook. Is he still creeping? Dr Ook takes a few steps forward and then turns to Aldean "What could happen? Its just a tree..." Just as he says it however the hill rumbles and the bananas swing as the ground seems to come alive. Indeed it was not a solitary hill but a very large earth elemental with the tree sprouting from its back and its looking at the monkey. Dr. Ook screams in fear.

Godwyn squeaks as both fists come straight down on top of her head, slamming her into the ground. It even makes a crater around her.
Dust and dirt kicks up for a few moments before a royal blue flash shines from the imprint in the earth. With that, and a roar of defiance, Godwyn leaps forward... and delivers the business end of her blade into the bulk of the elemental. Once, twice, three times... and again, she puts her fury behind it.

Aldean stops short. It's distracted. A smile spreads across his features, and beneath the rousing call to arms, he adds another effect, gesturing in a strict rhythm. Drums are audible beneath his bardsong for a few seconds before he /slams/ both fists into the ground, eyes on a spot away from Godwyn.
The ground ... /shakes/, knocking the massive creature prone and shaking the rocks that hold him together. Quickly, the bard backpedals out of reach before it can get back up!

A glow from Godwyn's right hand was pressed into her breastplate again, and soon enough, she took in a breath, far easier than before. Aldean's drums smashed into it, and it fell. The rocks that scatter from the impact rise... and yet they don't move much, yet she has all she needs now.
"Like I said... I'm sorry." She's right next to it now, and with a flourish of her blade, she raises it high. "You can rest now."
One hack, two hacks... and the third one rams into the ground as it penetrates through that tough elemental hide, once and for true.
The rumbling earth elemental crumbles under Godwyn's savage swings and returns to being an anassuming hill with a tree on it. The giant bananas still hang undusturbed despite the commotion. Dr. Ook rushes for the tree and bananas. "Yes! This is a victory for all ape kind! Imagine the smoothies I could make with these! Also if I can grow other giant fruit! Back to the ship and beyond!" he howls pointing to the sky. <OOC> Aldean says, "It's about everyone contributing to get the job done."
