PrP: Rattle Hum Thump
The call from the tiny, outlying village of Kastlan on the edge of the Felwood was rather unexpected. A sturdy lot used to fending for themselves, it's a bit unusual to receive the sort of call the Explorer's Guild received earlier in the day -- there's something shut in a logging shed, and barred with everything they can think of. They don't quite know what got in there, but it was in there with two of their horses, and they fear the worst.
With that in mind, the lot of you have been sent to find out just what got into this shed, and remove it if you can. It's a fairly long journey, but thankfully, the weather is holding for a miracle, and only a good stiff breeze mars the day.
Taro lopes along in a league-eating stride, his long two-handed axe held in one hand or the other. "Whatever it is," he growls, "It had better taste good."
Mel has made food for the journey as well, so there is some pretty decent fare for walking. "I'm Mel," he indtroduces himself. "I've done this sort of thing a few times before. With a large group like this, it hopefully won't be too hard."
Finally another hunt! Rhar and Gurr haven't had too many since the wedding (Rhar's, not Gurr's) and they're itching to hunt. Now that the fleas have died down some. That and people need help. Rhar doesn't worry too much about needing to get there, as Gurr does that part, and he's strong. Of course, that means he'll be hungry when they get there, too. Rhar turns towards Taro, looking over her shiny new flat wolf stick and grins. "Gurr agree." She then introduces herself to the others she doesn't know with their official titles. "Rhar, Baness Night! Gurr, Eat Everything."
Not seeming to mind the breeze, Fiore, a rather massive giantborn seems to be walking along with taro and Mel. She looks down at the group, kinda literally, and chuckles a bit. "I've done this a couple of times as well. No worries. I'm Fiore, by the way." She says tying her hair into a ponytail.
A good deal of the journey, Hethyr's spent in prayer; silent, so as not to butt into what road-chatter may happen, evidently fortifying herself for whatever may come at the end of the road. Her greetings back at Alexandria, friendly and sincere enough, and as they near their destination she seems to stir from her meditations, arching an eyebrow toward Taro as he makes his restless mutter. "Food's for after," the Sunguard notes, "business first. I'll shout th'first round, once the dust settles." Glancing Mel's way, the silver caps on the end of her braids clink and clatter as she bobs her head. "Your lips t'gods' ears, aye."
Lyrana moves along with the others. Weather and road conditions doesn't really bother the wargolem. She moves along watching the others as they go. She dips her head to Mel, "I am Lyrana, chosen of Daeus." she offers and stretches a bit to keep her joints loose.
Taro's brow furrows. Business before food? He likes it better when he doesn't have to distinguish between the two. But he just grunts, and the picks ip his pace even more so that he can drift ahead of the slower members of the party.
Her first job with the Explorer's Guild. Kirran wasn't joking about how one could find quick work in the city of one was the adventuring type. No sooner had she signed up at the Explorer's Guild, and she already was given a job to do. Korrani has been silent most of the trip. A new face to the city. As introductions are exchanged, she finally states bruskly, "Korrani." A pause. "Penfast," she adds the only recently added family name that she's stolen back for herself. The half-oruch strides along with a tall, proud gait.
It's a long hike, and the sun is drifting westward, tinting the evening sky pink and gold, before the group reaches the outskirts of the indicated village. It's easy enough to identify -- it's the first sign of civilization since lunchtime. The trip has been mercifully quiet and event-free, likely due to the size of your group in both numbers and makeup.
You were asked when you arrive to find a man by the name of Matto for more information. It's easy enough to locate the shed in question -- all the doors and windows have logs and stone blocks and bricks piled against them. The structure itself, though, is wood. Fortunately, there seem to be plenty of people out and about, still working and looking to be preparing to call it a day.

Mel comes to the village and takes a look around. He spends a lot of time checking out the barricade and shed, though, and not much on the rest of the place. "Well, they seem to have caught whatever it is. I wonder what they need us for?" he muses aloud. "Yeh they caught it," Hethyr grunts, dropping the head of her warhammer into the dirt with a heavy 'thump' and leaning on the handle. "That ain't been in question. Reason we's all here is... what now? So... where's this Matto then."
Rhar and Gurr both sniff around as much as they look, with Rhar leaning over Gurr's neck to get her nose closer to the ground. "Pack let out!" She offers up the easy answer. If it's prey, they hunt it. If it's not, they let it go. If it is a threat, they protect the pack.
Korrani steps along by the barricaded shed. She stares at the ground, trying to look for tracks that may give hints as to what's inside.
As if in answer to Mel, everyone can hear it. A slam against the roof of the structure inside, followed by a loud chittering and scraping. The wood groans and creaks at the force against it, but for now seems to be holding. It sounds as if whatever it is, there's more than one.
Several of the villagers start at the slamming sound, and more than a few look nervous. Maybe ... they move a little faster. One, though, pauses as he sees the group, looking them ... over. A man of middle years, dressed in simple and patched clothing, he seems to relax as he gets their measure. "Matto? You'd be the folk from the Explorer's Guild, then, and not a moment too soon. MATTO!" He raises his voice in a bellow audible halfway across this tiny village.
It doesn't take too long before a graybeard emerges from one of the tightly chinked log houses that comprise the structures of this village emerges, and performs a similar look over.
<OOC> Iuriel says, "Does anyone have knowledge/nature?"
Fiore keeps a decent distance behind Korrani before looking towards Rhar. "Hang on a second Rhar." she says a little calmly. "Let's see if we can figure out what this is." She says as Matto arrives, and she bows tdeeply to him.

Lyrana cocks her head to the side. "Yes we have come to offer assistance what it may be." She smiles a little to the villagers trying to be polite and friendly. THe golem turns towards the greybeard.
Taro steps up to the shed and tries to peer between the logs blocking a window. Then his expression sours. "That sounds like - bugs." He flinches away instinctively at scraping from the inside. "Big ones," he allows. "But still bugs." Taro then looks speculatively between door and window. "If we open only one...they all come out from one direction, and straight onto our steel." He hefts his axe for emphasis.
Hethyr rocks back away from the shout, the corners of her mouth turning up. As the greybeard approaches, the Khazad bobs her head. "Well met, sir," she begins. "Anythin' as we ought t'know, so's we c'n get this done without any unnecessary fuss? Quicker we take care of this, quicker y'all can get back t'yer lives."
"Rhar!" She stops her sniffing and staring at the shed with the things in it to introduce herself to Mato and acknoledge Fiore. "You catch bugs! What help need?" She is all about helping the pack, and since the pack includes pretty much everyone, she's always helpful.
Korrani slides her bow from her back and strings it, taking several steps back from the structure at the sound of the slamming noise. "A bottle neck approach?" Korrani asks in appreciation. She cocks her head to listen for the giving of wood from the slamming. "We may have to hurry before they make their own way out."
"And are we glad to see you, sirs and madams," Matto answers, a little creakily, still looking at the group, and especially Korrani and Taro who've already approached the shed. "You be careful," he warns, before speaking to all of them. "We don't rightly know what it is, or how they got in there, but they've been slamming at the walls for three days. We make good, solid buildings, but that ... bugs, you say?" He cocks his head. "Ugh, I cannot imagine how bugs that big got in there ... at least find out if those poor horses are all right! We got all but two out...." He's beginning to dither.
And there's another slam into the building, this time against the wall where Taro's trying to peer inside.
Mel nods in agreement about letting them out a bottleneck. "That seems like a good idea," he hazards, shouldering his shield and drawing his shortsword, standing sort of ready and only a bit back from the blocked-up exit.
Taro scowls at the wall. Then he moves around towards the door and stands next to Mel, readying his own axe for a blow. He casts a glance at the rest of the party. "Everyone agreed then? We open the door and slay whatever comes out?" He then casts a look towards Maato, almost as an afterthought.
Rhar nods to Matto. Three times. "Pack stop bugs. Pack save horse." She leans over Gurr's head to look him in the eyes. "No eat horse. Eat bug!" With that, the two pad and bound to the shed. Rhar already had her big flat round metal stick with the wolf head on it. Now she pulls out her smaller, sharper metal stick. "Ready for bug!"
Hethyr unlimbers her shield, hefting it in her right hand. "An' let's keep't in th'shed as we can," she notes. "Wouldn't do t'be fightin' suchlike out in t'open, when we's here t'keep these folk from havin' more t'be afraid of, yeah?"
<OOC> Iuriel says, "OK. Who is going to open the door. You'll need to clear logs and such away from it to do so."
Korrani circles about as she pulls an arrow from her quiver, positioning herself just short of thirty feet from the side of the window so she can get a clear shot past the front line. She nods along with Taro's plan.
<OOC> Rhar can! "I'm the biggest and strongest one here. :)"
Lyrana pulls out her mace and shield as they near the door, "Well lets get things out of the way." she doesn't look like she is going to move to open the door, but she will help get things out of the way.
<OOC> Taro can help clear the door <OOC> Iuriel says, "OK. If you're helping to clear the door, pose it. It'll take you abut 5 minutes to do. They piled this thing pretty good."
Lyrana starts with a few of the others the process of clearing the door.
Mel sheathes his sword and stows his buckler and helps with the door clearing as well. "Cleaning up is a big part of things, too," he says with a sigh.
Right, they have to open the door first. Rhar is still new to this whole door concept. Dens don't have doors. She puts her sharp stick away for now so she can help move things out of the way. The thing in reach, that is, which isn't very high, but she has no problems moving what she can grab.
"Right," Matto says, nodding approval as the group states their plan and moves to execute, although he grins at the bow. "Not necessary, lass. 'Tis I who should be bowing to you for your assistance. Now, if you're to open that door ... I'd best get everyone inside. If you'll excuse me ..." With that, he turns away, and both he and the younger man start shouting. By the time the group has the doors cleared of blockage, there's not a living thing in sight anywhere in this village as people scurry to and fro, pulling in chickens, horses, cats, and of course, themselves and their children. Doors slam and bolts slide home on barns and houses across the village.
It takes some doing, but the group clears out the debris in front of the double doors that lead into this logging shed. All of you can hear an angry buzzing, and chittering and scraping inside.
<OOC> Iuriel says, "OK. Who is going to pull the doors open, and who is standing in front of it and how close?" <OOC> Lyrana says, "would like to cast shield of faith on myself."
Taro sets his axe to one side and then puts both hands on one of the stone blocks. He hefts, grunting with effort and dragging it to the side. He comes back for the next slab, then a log, gradually making a clutter next to one side of the door. Scowling furiously, he begins to drag the stones and logs farther to the side, making progress but slowly.
<OOC> Iuriel says, "That's fine, Lyrana. Pose it and be sure to +cast." GAME: Lyrana casts Shield of Faith. Caster Level: 4 DC: 15 <OOC> Taro says, "Can I will pull a door open with one hand and have my axe in the other - and hopefully end up to the side next to the door?" <OOC> Lyrana says, "+2 to my ac" <OOC> Taro says, "Like a guy at a hotel opening the door for someone ;)" <OOC> Iuriel says, "OK, so you're pulling the door open in such a way as to leave it clear?"
Lyrana takes a moment after they clear the door to touch her holy symbol and the air around her glows slightly. She then moves up with her shield and mace ready, standing to ward what might come out when someone opens the door.
<OOC> Rhar and Gurr can hold the line at the dooray unless someone else wants to. <OOC> Taro says, "Well yes but I was expecting some other melee type(s) to be in front of the door, just not right in front of it. I didn't want to end up right in front right after opening th door" <OOC> Iuriel says, "That's fine. Everyone please pose where you are." <OOC> Iuriel says, "When the door opens, that is."
Korrani remains in her position about twentyfive feet from the door with her bow ready and notching an arrow without pulling back on the string. She's been on guard in case the creatures break through elsewhere while the clearing work was being done. Relative to the door, as the creatures break out, she would be on their 2 o'clock position. Standing close to the door, Fiore flexes her fingers, sort of anticipating a fight. She's also right behind Taro. Rhar finishes up the moving, climbs back onto Gurr and gets out her sticks again. Gurr pads to the door with the others. "Ready for bug!" Again.

When Taro yanks open the now-cleared door, nothing happens at first, except that the chittering and the buzzing grow rather louder. Nothing comes out at first ... and so the group begins moving in. Hethyr's shining shield casts a light into the dimness of the shed, allowing the group to better see what it is that they face.
And then? It happens. As if out of nowhere, a large, squat beetle with sharp, finely-separated mandibles that look to be too big for its body barrels on buzzing wings out of the darkness, the razor-sharp mouthparts catching Fiore and tearing hard. A second scuttles out of the darkness in the corner, but Rhar's shiny metal stick turns the thing aside easily enough.

Mel is biding his time, looking for an opening, and when he spots it, he's able to bury his blade deep. The bug twitches, and he sticks his blade deeper, wedging it in hard, twisting, until the bug is down on the ground and motionless.
Lyrana looks around, "Is anyone in need of assistance?" she asks, as the spiritual longsword disipates.
As the last of the beetles falls before the group's blades and arrows, it's now possible to look more deeply into the large logging shed. Shadows cast by Hethyr's light spell dance at the edge of its range, but it's a large, empty space, with sharp axes and saws stored neatly away in racks along its sides to keep them away from unwitting hands in the darkness. Mel looks around the shed in such light as the party brought with them. "Well. So much for any horses here. But the bugs were here for a couple days, they said."
GAME: Lyrana casts Spiritual Weapon. Caster Level: 4 DC: 16 <OOC> Lyrana says, "forgot to do that earlier" <OOC> Iuriel says, "Oh, and now that thre's time to sniff ... definitely dead/" <OOC> Lyrana says, "I will throw out another channel heal, just incase something else hiding in there" <OOC> Iuriel says, "My fault." Rhar pants, catching her breath and keeping more blood in where it belongs. She pauses to listen and hears nothing. "Bug eat horse."

Fiore makes a bit of a face. "Well....the horses were the only food in here, so naturally the beetles were going to eat them, instead of each other."
<OOC> Iuriel says, "Everyone can pick that up."
Lyrana grabs her holy symbol and sends a wave of positive energy coursing through them all again as she moves into the place, "Yeah they do not seem to be amongst the living, any signs of anything else?"
Deeper in the shed, on the other side of the logging area, you find the horses, along with smashed stall walls. Dead, blood sprayed everywhere and flesh scissored. The smell alone tells the tale pretty clearly, now that everyone's not busy fighting for their lives, and a fat fly, then another, buzzes past you as you walk across the room. Definitely dead, and likely beetle food.
Fiore walks her way in and.....makes a bit of a face. "Well......that was their last meal." BLunt this one. "It's a shame the horses are dead though, they didn't deserve this." While Rhar might be to busy sniffing around, Gurr gives both Hethyr and Lyrana and lick in gratitude on her behalf. Rhar can lick and/or thank them on the trip back to the city. "Village find more horse?"
Mel shrugs diffidently. "Well," he says, "It's not much we could have done about it."
"Now that," Hethyr sighs, pressing the back of her hand against her nose, "is a damn, damn shame. Welp... c'mon, y'all. Let's go on out an' give th'folk th'good an'bad news." As Gurr licks her arm, she glances down, stowing her warhammer, and giving Gurr a pat on the head in return.
Fiore sighs a bit. "yes it is." She says to Hethyr. She then nods to Lyrana and hethyr. "Thank you." She then nudges Rhar. "Come on, little one."
Korrani slides her arrow back in the quiver, but keeps her bow in hand, just in case. Lowering it to her side, she moves away from the stench of the structure. Her gaze is focused again on the tracks. "Hopefully there won't be more coming here in the future." Bug infestations can be tricky, though. She tries to get a feel for where the tracks originated from.
<OOC> Iuriel says, "Survival check." <OOC> Iuriel says, "This is a tracking check." GAME: Korrani rolls Survival: (5)+9: 14
You paged Korrani with 'You're not finding anything, but you take a closer look at the bug, adn realize -- they fly.' From afar, Korrani nods.
Rhar doesn't mind the smell, but could use some fresh air, even with the healing.
GAME: Hethyr rolls survival: (6)+4: 10 You paged Hethyr with 'You're not seeing anything in the way of tracks.'
Fiore looks over towards Korrani. "We can only hope." She says looks to Rhar. "Open the doors, wouldja?"
<OOC> Iuriel says, "I don't think you guys actually closed the doors...."
There's no sign of anyone stirring outside when the group emerges from the barn, rather covered in bug juice (most of you) and blood (some of you). Everyone but Rhar is none the worse for wear, and even she looks considerably better for the applications of divine aid from Lyrana and Hethyr. Still, the village doesn't seem to be coming out just yet.
