Narrator: All cutscenes are taken from the point of view of the adventurers... (Cutscene) -upon receiving your note and reading its content, you make your way to the guild's headquarters. There you meet a young man who informs you of the contract that was offered by a high official in Rune. The man could not provide you with any more details other than that it requires you to go deep within enemy held territory. On the side, your liaison tells you of his misgivings about the mission. But nevertheless, he offers you the contract as you have decided already on that matter. As a last word of advice, he tells you not to trust anyone. He leads you to a horse-drawn carriage that will take you and your companions to a different, non-descript building... Stjepan is the best at being non-descript, in a non-descript kind of way, in his blued full plate, giant sword and giant flail, he looks a lot like, well, a giantborn from the Dran Plateau. That, at least is good, right? He's also got the what-did-I-sign-for scowl etched on his face. Silvana usually doesn Torak is a simple man, well, oruch. He is here to test himself, whatever challenge is there, he will take it, so the misgivings are brushed aside without a care. He calmly goes along with the group, rather quiet, probably meditating or something. Silvana usually she doesn't go signing up on things without her friend but he was busy and this kind of sounded like a good idea. So much for that aspect and of course well now she has a new group that she has agreed to go on with, though the warning makes her frown. She looks towards the others and brings up the hood of her cloak up to try and perhaps hide a little bit, she's just one of the guys. Taro is also an oruch. He doesn't look like the meditative sort. He seems more like the savage barbaric type. "What's this contract?" he asks the others, looking back and forth from one face to the next. "Does anybody know?" Stjepan leans his chin on folded hands. "Well, we're going behind the lines and it's all secret. Apparently, we're to learn more and not to trust anyone." (Cutscene) -In the building, you are met with more members of the guild and they take you to an underground passage. The passageway has many doors on its sides. After some time walking through the passage, you are ushered into a room. The room is circular with a raised platform at the centre. You are told that the teleportation device will be activated once you are all on the platform. As soon as every member is on, a puff of smoke rises from the ground beneath you. -As the smoke disappears, you find yourself in a different room. Still circular, but now with many guards, all of which have their shield raised and their spears levelled at you. Stjepan keeps his hands where people can see them, waits. He's teleported before, after all. Cheeks stretch wide as he cracks a broad smile. "Hi." The robed oruch looks around at the various guards, his eyes narrowing slightly. "One must assume this is just a precaution, but if so, then it is likely this method of transport is not secure, or we are not trusted." Silvana wrinkles her nose "I guess lesson one about not trusting anyone." she doesn't look at all happy at the guards but also raises her hands so that the guard can see them. Taro'eyes widen and his hand twitches for his axe. But he's not reckless enough to challenge a room full of guards. "They knew we were coming, right?" (Cutscene) -"Stop" says a uniformed man amongst the shielded guardians. He observes the people who have materialized on the platform. He nods his head slowly after identifying who you all are. A man is signalled from behind the uniformed man and given specific orders what to do. This person escorts you out of the teleportation room. -You are brought to a troubled man with a stern voice. He looks you over and nods before giving you the details of your mission. He informs you that you are to reach a military installation deep within enemy-held territory. Each of you is given a demolition device that only activates when all five items are put together. Your mode of transportation is a stealthed air-ship that will fly over your insertion point. You are to jump off the ship in mid-flight. A one-shot device will be given to each of you which will allow you to slow your decent. You are warned not to activate the device early or you will likely be used as target practice by anti-air units on the ground. Activate too late and you will have the ground to brace your fall. You all are also given a special compass that will lead you to your first rallying point. From there, you have to locate a special device that was left behind by the scouts who have located the communication device. You only need to touch your special compass to the device for it to lead you into the direction of the secret installation. Once you reach the location, you are to arm the demolition device and make sure that the communication device is destroyed. The man tells you how very important it is to have that communication relay destroyed. Once that is achieved, your compasses will change directions. It will direct you towards your extraction point. You are to head to the extraction point and wait for your transport to arrive. He does not wait for you to ask questions and dismisses you right away. You are escorted outside by armed guards and then lead to the courtyard. Stjepan grumbles to the guards. "Did the gnomes put him up to this?" Torak frowns, looking at the others for a moment, "One thinks this is very complex, and many problems can arrise from small mistakes." He looks over whatever devices were given for the job. Taro looks briefly surprised when the device is mentioned, but then smiles with familiarity. "I've used these devices before!" he announces. Then he peers at the other devices, mouthing the directions silently as he tries to memorize them. (Cutscene) As you arrive at the courtyard, another person meets up with your group and silently passes to you several devices. One of which is the special compass that will guide you to your destinations. The other device is a small arm strap that you use to slow your decent. The third item is the explosive ordinance which is too big to be carried alone, thus it has been decostructed into five parts. After all of these items have been given into your hands, you are ushered to your horses. "Follow the compass towards your next destination. Be swift, they are waiting for you." Said the man. Godwyn has arrived. Stjepan nods. "It was gnomes," he grumbles. However, he consents to the devices, only asking: "These will hold me as well as the smaller people here?" Small people like, you know, oruch. The robed oruch looks over the devices, then situates himself so he can carry them properly. "One thinks this will be a unique task. One has not encountered such complex devices before." He seems to be studying the bomb he is carrying. The man who gave all the items provides an answer to Stjepan, "They have been specially calibrated for your use. It is also a one-shot item, so don't press any button or when you drop from your ship, you will find that the device isn't working." A young woman, all of nineteen years, stands at five feet seven inches wearing armour of a common make. Her blond hair and ocean-blue eyes, along with her pale complexion, gives her an almost ethereal quality. Treasured in the realms from which she hails, her beauty is of an uncommon nature, even as her figure remains a ways off from that of a fully-matured woman. Those who underestimate her size and skill however may soon notice that the great-sword on her back is not merely for display, the hand-and-a-half weapon sharpened to a keen edge. (Cutscene) -You follow the directions shown on the compass which leads you to a secluded air-field. Several grounded zeppelins are visible as you get nearer. Air-field personnel identify you and lead you to your transport. As you get there, you realize that you and your companions are not alone on your insertion mission. Several soldiers are already seated on the carriage of the ship. A special seat is reserved for you and your guild companions. You hear some of the soldiers asking amongst themselves who you are. One of the soldiers identifies you as adventure guild members from Alexandria. One of the soldiers sneers and says that they don't need any help from mercenaries. -A goblin pilot and a gnome co-pilot set the ship for travel. Once all checks have been confirmed, the ship takes into the air and glides through the sky over the clouds. As soon as the ship passes into enemy territory, the pilot flips a switch that causes the ship to be covered by white smoke. The ship drifts through the sky surrounded by its smoke, like a floating cloud. Stjepan looks at the goblin and gnome, and makes a sign to Angoron. A glance at the air-device, then he rolls his neck nervously. After that, he takes his seat and tries to make sure he doesn't get too tense just sitting there. Torak remains quiet for the trip, unconcerned with the soldiers views on mercenaries, nor worried too much about their task. There isn't much to do; he pulls out a small string of beads, slowly running them through his fingers, counting them by touch. Silvana sits down and just keeps quiet, as she watches the others with her. There is a thoughtful expression on her face. Godwyn however is... singing. It wasn't tuneless, but at the same time it didn't have any words. Just a steady humming. Her right foot tapped with a steady rhythm, eyes closed, hands folded just before her knees with the device in their grip. Maybe it was her way of ridding herself of those nerves before battle. Who knew for certain? (Cutscene) -As the air ship continues to fly towards its destination, the ship's captain notices from his sensors something outside the cloud cover. The gnome co-pilot confirms the captain's discovery. All of a sudden, fireballs can be seen hurtling through the cloud and nearly hitting the ship. Evasive manoeuvres are being made. Panic begins to set inside the passenger section as several of the soldiers are slammed against the bulk head due to the ship's evasion. One of the soldiers, the one that said that they did not need mercenaries, begins mumbling that they weren't suppose to be attacked until they made landing, that the Dran forces promised not to kill him. Another fireball comes through the cloud and hits the ship's blimp. The pilot screams to the bulkhead for everyone to jump ship. Another fireball streaks into the cloud and this time hits the pilot cockpit, incinerating the pilot and co-pilot. The fire begins to rush into the bulkhead. You have no choice but to jump out the ship. <Roll reflex DC10, fail and you get singed on the way out for 2 damage> GAME: Taro rolls reflex: (12)+4: 16 GAME: Silvana rolls reflex: (2)+7: 9 (Fail) GAME: Godwyn rolls reflex: (7)+4: 11 GAME: Stjepan rolls reflex: (17)+2: 19 GAME: Torak rolls reflex: (16)+5: 21 The oruch reacts quickly, the beads hang from his wrist as he leaps for the stairs, climbing up to the deck in a few quick bounds, his speed is impressive. As he reaches the deck he takes a moment to ensure the rest of the group is following and there is no real danger, before he jumps from the ship, focusing on the commands he was given on how to activate the descent device. Stjepan doesn't need the encouragement -- given the choice between inbound fireballs, a burning airship, and the sweet freedom of freefall, Stjepan jumps out of the seat and barrels after the fast oruch. He takes a long jump, arms windmilling, off to the deck, before turning back to watch the ship burn above him. Godwyn's eyes snap open. Yeah, that was definitely not good for her nerves! She hissed as she scrambled to her feet, sprinted for the exit, and then leapt head-first out of the doomed ship. The only mantra in her head was a prayer of protection and safety from Althea as she (prepares to) activate her device... Silvana was too busy checking out something that when she gets up to jump out she is hit and winces as she puts out the bit of fire on her cloak as she follows suit jumping out as well. Taro snarls at the soldier and looks ready to attack him with his bare hands. Another fireball makes him think again, and instead he runs for the side of the deck. He pauses to make sure his falling device is secured and then leaps over the railing. GAME: Benthus damaged you for 1 points. 15 remaining. You all manage to leap out of the burning air-ship. Sadly, it is only you and your guild allies who manage to do so. The air-ship detonates in the air, causing shrapnel to fly in all directions... (Roll reflex DC10, fail and you get damage 2). The robes go fluttering as the oruch jumps, luckily he is wearing tighter fitting clothing underneath. He takes a few moments before he catches the heck of free falling, spreading his hands and legs as he waits till the right time to activate the device. Silvana closes her eyes as she gets dizzy as they fall and fall, in her mind she wonders what her friend will say what did she get too, she's going to end up paste on the ground for what again. He adjusts his arms and legs on one side, and goes vering over towards one of the out of control people. He grabs them and steadys them, showing them to keep thier arms and legs apart before he lets go and zips over to the other. Somehow the nimble oruch manages to get both of them at least falling steady. Godwyn's eyes narrowed. "Wonderful. This is just what we needed right-" She gasped as she saw two others tumbling out of control. "Great Mother above!" She gritted her teeth and made her way toward the nearest one. "Come on... come on!" Godwyn groaned as she missed her mark. "Not good!" Time passes quickly and you soon find yourself close to mother earth. (Roll reflex at 5 to slow your decent) GAME: Torak rolls ref: (2)+5: 7 GAME: Silvana rolls reflex: (18)+7: 25 GAME: Godwyn rolls reflex: (2)+4: 6 GAME: Stjepan rolls ref: (10)+2: 12 Stjepan cuts it close, but definitely not as close as some of the others -- despite the spin, he jabs the button and... (Cutscene) -All your team members manage to activate their deceleration device on time, which is close to the tree canopies. The explosion of your transport and all the commotions in the air, however, causes the rest of your team to be separated. -The moment you land on the ground, you can already hear the sound of hunting dogs barking in the distance. There is very little time for you to dilly-dally and so you activate you special compass device that will lead you to your rallying point. You can only hope you will find the rest of your companions there. Perhaps he was distracted with the rescue effort, but by the time he notices their distance to the ground he barely catches the activation to slow him down to a landing. As he looks around, he activates the compass, and then moves off as quietly as he can, and quickly. Godwyn sighed as someone else picked up the slack for her. She had to do better than that... but for now; there was a very hard stretch of unforgiving earth coming up very quickly. And so she activated her device. Once she landed on her feet, Godwyn's ears seemed to twitch at the sound of hunting dogs. The Dranei were expecting them it seemed, and now she had to rally everyone else. Godwyn activated her compass, and then made her way toward the rest of the team, praying that none of them were hurt. Silvana lands safely after the little light bulb goes off and she activates the device. She frowns as she doesn't see anyone and hears the dogs, ah look another toy. She turns that one on and begins to quietly head in the direction it points, keeping her eyes and ears as open as she can. Taro's feetbegin Stjepan rumbles through the woods, moving as quietly as he can -- so you can probably hear him coming. (At this point, Stjepan is replaced by Belladona...) Belladona looks around as she spots the others and she nods, "I think so, the others might come, but they will have to catch up.' She says as she looks over Samafa to make sure she's okay. Silvana lands and looks around seeing if anyone is close by, she rubs her at the spot she got a little burn before she looks at the device in her hand and begins to follow it being careful but hurrying to get to the point. She is watching her steps and keeping eyes and ears open, in the look-out for enemies and also her companions. Silvana looks relieved when she sees the others gathering by the old hallow tree stump and begins to make her way closer to them. She makes sure that everyone looks alright and who is still not there yet. Taro reaches a hand down into the stump. "I think I see it," he says in a lowered voice. When he pulls his hand back out its holding a metallic device that looks like a cube. Taro peers at it, turning it this way and that to get a better view. Then he holds it out, offering it to the others. "Does anyone remember how to use this?" Torak has arrived. GAME: Godwyn rolls wisdom: (14)+1: 15 GAME: Taro rolls wisdom: (16)+2: 18 GAME: Torak rolls wisdom: (3)+3: 6 GAME: Belladona rolls wisdom: (20)+2: 22 GAME: Silvana rolls Wisdom: (5)+1: 6 Eventually the acrobatic Oruch will rejoin the group; he nods as he sees them, making his way over. Godwyn didn't respond. She simply touched her compass with the cube, a solemn expression on her features. She wasn't even hoping for anything, she just acted. Her compass lit up, and the needle re-aligned itself. "There we go." Belladona hmms as she moves over to see what Taro has in his hand. She looks over the cube, "Well we can do like Godwyn just did and touch the compass to the cube." She goes to gently touch the compass to the cube. Silvana watches others touch the compass to the cube and follows along with the crowd and does the same. Torak nods, touching his to the cube, then looking around. "One wonders if there will even be a pickup, or if they think us destroyed." Taro sets his axe down and then produces his compass. He touches it to the cube. He examines both for a moment. Then he sets down the cube so he can reclaim his weapon. He walks a few paces away and turns thus way and that, studying the compass. Godwyn nodded. "There's no need to think about that. It's going to happen." She made it sound like it was a foregone conclusion. Maybe it was because Paladin, or maybe she was just overly optimistic. Either way, she cleared her throat. "Let's go ruin their day." (Cutscene) Once you find the special device that the Rune commander told you about, you touch your compass to the device, the pointer redirects to the location of the communication tower... As you reach the periphery of the station, you find that it is a stone obelisk with a pulsating crystal on the top. The structure is presently guarded by five armed men. The distance from the guards is 120 feet. (DM note: The group can make preparations for their assault on the station. Once everything is done, start combat by typing '+init'. Your team will have the advantage of a surprise round.) Belladona smiles, "Sounds good to me." She says as she follows after the others and she has her shield ready. She hmmms as she sees the guards and she looks to the others. She kneels down to cast a spell on Samafa to get her ready. GAME: Belladona casts Barkskin. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 (casting barkskin on Samafa) GAME: Godwyn rolls Perception: (8)+4: 12 GAME: Belladona rolls perception: (2)+8: 10 GAME: Torak rolls perception: (12)+8: 20 GAME: Silvana rolls perception: (3)+6: 9 Taro peers at the obelisk. His gaze shifts to each guard in turn, and he extends a finger before looking at the next. When he's done he looks over the party. "The numbers are even," he notes. "Let's try to sneak closer...maybe we can attack them before they have a chance to prepare themselves. If we are seen, everyone attacks immediately. Agreed?" Godwyn grimaced. "Heavily armed and armoured. Not going to be easy." She glanced back at the others. "If we get the jump on them, we'll have to coordinate our efforts on one at a time. They'll go down faster that way." She glanced down at the scene again. "Then again, I'm open for other tactics." Round One - Init 17. It is now Dranei forces' turn! Silvana is next! <OOC> Taro will Run to get up close to one - hope to avoid AOOs from their polearms since they are surprised The guards spot movements converging on their location. There is a quick but short chatter between the guards and then one of them points a device above him. Something shoots out of the device and goes high in the air before it exploded in a bright flash... <OOC> Benthus says, "The group has roughly 10 rounds before the nearest Dran army arrives in the area," GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 15. It is now Silvana's turn! Torak is next! GAME: Note Flat-footed ended. The person known as Silvana hides from sight... GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 11. It is now Torak's turn! Taro is next! Taro flinches at the flash, then turns to scowl at some of the 'louder' party members. He grunts a word in Yrch that translates more or less to 'noisy elephant', and then rushes forward for the closest guard, all thoughts of stealth forgotten. One of the guard was pretty much surprised to see Taro right in front of him, that he was not able to use his bladed polearm... Round One - Init 6. It is now Taro's turn! Belladona is next! Silvana is trying to sneak up as the others start to make their charge she doesn't need to get close, personally close is not her best so she sneaks up as far as she can go and prepares to shoot as soon as one comes close GAME: Silvana rolls stealth: (16)+9: 25 It wasn't long before those that were capable of getting as close as they could without being noticed... got as close as they could. They were right on top of them and no one even suspected. Unfortunately the flare went up just then, and Godwyn grimaced. She drew her sword and broke from the tree line. Speed was of the essence. If they couldn't do this quickly, they would face a backup force that they couldn't possibly defeat. GAME: Taro RAGES!, gaining: +4 Str, +6 Con, +2 Will and -2 AC The quick footed Oruch moves up fast, but in a slightly erratic pattern, perhaps to make him a harder target to shoot with something. Taro grins savagely at the guard. He can't bring his polearm to bear! Then the Oruch's grin widens even more. Spittle flies from his lips as he howls. His muscles seem to bulge, as do his eyes. He brings the axe up and then slams it down in a massive blow...that buries the axe head up to half its width in the ground next to the guard's foot. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 6. It is now Belladona's turn! Godwyn is next! <OOC> Belladona says, "I'll move up 30 feet, have Samafa follow via stealth and cast produce flame. I'll throw some fire at one of the dran not in melee" GAME: Belladona casts Produce Flame. It is now Godwyn's turn! Dranei Forces is next! Belladona mvoes forward and she starts to cast as spell. She holds out her hand and a flame appears. She looks to make sure that Samafa is coming with her. She hurls the flame at one of the dran soldiers and he's badly burned by it. Silvana is being very stealthy and moves closer trying to stay hidden to get the surprise on them It is at this stage that the Dranei forces have noticed your presence. There is a quick but short chatter from all five guards and the one that is not in melee aims a device up in the air. Something flies up to the sky and explodes. Those that have enemies in front of them (namely Taro and Godwyn) draw out their greatswords (which, actually, does not provoke AoO) and slashes at them... Both guards miss. The rest brace for attacks... GAME: NEW ROUND! Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Two - Init 17. It is now Dranei forces' turn! Silvana is next! Taro jerks his axe free from the ground, then uses the momentum to spin around and lash out in a backhanded attack. If he was thinking clearly he might have aimed for the next, and beheaded the guard...but instead he smashes the axe into the center of the chest. Which has almost the same effect, but is even messier. Taro's axe is held behind him, extended. The very tip of the blade drags along the ground for the last few steps. But when the guard is close enough, Taro skids to a stop and lets the axe swing around, transferring his momentum to the swing. Once again he doesn't bother to aim, and the giant weapon crashes into the guard's abdomen, crumpling him. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Three - Init 6. Yet she smiled at him all the same as she lifted her right hand and made her best attempt at healing herself. Definitely worth the look on his face. Without further hesitation, she swung at him again, her focus sharpened with the fresh damage to her person. Yet and still, it wasn't about to get any better. It seemed his armor was a bit better than she'd expected. Yet at the same time... he retaliated... and the stalemate began. Godwyn grinned. All she needed was one good hit, and this was over... "Clear!" She glanced around. "Status, now!" (Cutscene) After the last of the defending Dranei forces has been vanquished, the area becomes quiet. It is then that you all can hear the faint barkings of hunting dogs from a distance. It would appear that the Rune mission giver's plan has been found out. You see a magical hour-glass appear on top of it. You realize that it is a timer and gives you and indication when the device will explode. After determining the rate of the sand falling to the bottom, you calculate that you have roughly one minute to clear out before the device detonates. (Cutscene) After defeating the elite Dran forces sent to stop you, you realize that the rest of the Dran army have already closed in on your location. You can hear the hunting dogs' barking getting louder. You wait a bit to make sure that the device detonates and that the communication tower is destroyed before you make haste your departure. The demolition device activates on cue. Bright light erupts from the base of the obelisk, followed by a deafening explosive sound. A shock wave pulses from the centre of the detonation and spreads wide. When everything cleared, there is a huge crater where the obelisk was once standing. You note that your compass is directing you to a different location. You follow it towards your extraction point. When you arrive at the extraction point, you realize that your transport is not there. You hear the sound of the hunting dogs barking not far away. You realize in that moment of time that there is no extraction ship that will take you back to safety. The only way to get back is by making a run for it to the border.
