- Summary: Locate a missing merchant caravan
- APL: 4
- Encounter 1: 1 Advanced Ogre, CR 4
- Encounter 2: 1 Advanced Ogre, CR 4
Benthus is located somewhere in the market area, looking thoughtful and concerned. There is another man beside him, one of the city's local investigators. The two appear to be talking about the murder case that occured near the temple district, as well as another unsettling news. "So you are telling me that the merchant caravan might be waylaid somewhere?" asks the half-sil knight to the investigator. The investigator shrugs and says, "It's a likely possibility considering that the man who is in charge of the caravan doesn't really take a lot of body-guards with him. It was a matter of time that a well-armed group of bandits are going to take advantage of their weak escorts. In any case, the local guards can't really do much about it as it is outside the city gates." Benthus shakes his head sadly and ponders some more, "I should probably inform the temple of Daeus if they can send any available member to scout their trade route. They could just be having a large obstacle in their path, or one of the wagons broke down." The investigator shrugs again, "Maybe, but I would bet that a more sinister nature is the cause for why the trade caravan has not arrived yet. Maybe I should inform the adventurer's guild about it. Maybe they may get some discount from the traders." Benthus nods his head and approves, "You do that, and I will do mine." The investigator breathes a sigh and says, "Yes, I guess so. I will see you later then. I think I may have found a lead on the murder mystery in the temple district." And so rumors of the missing caravan spreads around the market place like wildfire, and it eventually gets to you, and several other interested people. Tracking the rumor leads you to your new party members and then to the investigator himself. After a quick chat, you and your friends find out the trade route by which the caravan is said to be taking. It is only a matter of following the route and looking out for anything unusual. Yngvild has changed into her full armor. It is not quite as plain as it used to be, there are some oddly mechanical looking parts over the joints and other vulnerable parts, but still the ennamled symbol of Angoron stands proud on the breastplate. Not the stealthiest cleric in town she stomps along accompanied by the rattle of metal on metal, her huge earthbreaker thumping with each second step "I swear the caravans here need to hire more guards" she rumbles with a loud chuckle. Lothos travels with the group, he can ride so he is comfortable enough in the saddle, its a part of growing up in the vast. He is quiet so far in the trip, just scanning around with his eyes to look for any trouble. Every so often he might hum to himself some tune or something, when Yngvild speaks he shakes his head. "Of course not, then we wouldn't have a chance to be heroes! Do adventure! Save the day! You know....get paiiiid." He grins. Belladona comes along as she enjoys the ale that they have in the city. Samafa is with her although she doesn't like the city as much as Belladona does. She has her weapons and shield with her and she spots the others. She moves over towards them, "Hello what's up? I've heard some news that there are some missing caravans. Need some more help?" Yngvild eyes Lothos for a moment, blue eyes glittering through the visor of her helm "I don't do this for coin" she rumbles in her deep and resonant voice. That said she nods to Belladonna and then claps Godwyn's shoulder heavily "Caravan guarding doesn't attract the best mercenaries. Usualy the old or the unproven young" Belladona smiles, "Well I do, the more coin I have the more I can help others." She looks over at Yngvild, "And which are you?" Lothos gasps, "Then can I have your share? You know, minus the donation to the parish of your choice, we must always give some back after all." He then snaps his fingers at Belladona "Yes, see, she has it, coin helps you! Why, with coin you can buy pretty magical swords, to slay the evil enemies....then take thier stuff, sell it, buy better stuff, and do it again. Adventurer econ 101 folks." As the group continue following the trade route path indicated by the investigator, the scenery slowly changes into a wooded aread with a slight increase in the elevation. The light of the noon day say finds it hard to penetrate the thick tree canopies and so the area is darker than what it should be. Still manageable even by human standards, but not as bright to see things further than normal. And as the group progress, they could hear the sound of smashing and trashing as well as low muffled moans up ahead. Up ahead is a slight clearing of the woods, and the sight of caravan wreakage is visible. Broken stuff and other commodities lie littered on the floor, as well as the broken remains of traders and guardsmen. They were ill-equipped for the horror that came upon them. And what made it ironic is that, it is not the goods that the aggressor was interested in. It was the people who looked after the goods. GAME: You damaged Belladona for -100 points. 28 remaining. I know I was just teasing you." She looks to Godwyn, "Are you ready?" Samafa gives a yawn and stretches out. On the trail, Belladona walks around and she is looking around and she spots the wreakages up again and hears the smashing and trashing. She holds her shield up and ready as well as her claws are ready. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 22. It is now Belladona's turn! Bozo is next! GAME: Note Flat-footed on Belladona ended. <DM> There is a very large creature sitting on an upturned cart, munching on the ripped-out thigh portion of a dead merchant or guard.. GAME: Belladona rolls knowledge/nature: (5)+8: 13 (success, DC9) <DM> It is an ogre, but not an average one. A more advanced one... GAME: Belladona casts Barkskin. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 (On Samafa, Belladona' animal companion) Belladona narrows her eyes as she sees an ogre is ripping apart the merchant. She looks back at her companions, "It's an ogre and from the look of it it's very tough." She holds out her hand to touch Samafa as she casts a spell. A coating of rough looking bark coats the fur of the big cat. She gives a shake, but the bark stays on. Samafa stays beside Belladona... GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 19. It is now Bozo's turn! Lothos is next! The creature that was dining on the leg of a dead human watches lazily as the group come into view. It has noted their presence before it could even see them, or them it. It continues to munch on the leg some more before it slowly rises to its feet, grabs a wooden stick from its side (javellin) and then hurls it at one of the people coming into the clearing... <OOC> Benthus says, "1 Yngvild 2 Godwyn 3 Belladon 4 Lothos 5 Samafa" GAME: Benthus rolls 1d5: (2): 2 <OOC> Benthus says, "Godwyn is the target." He mutters a few arcane words, the ferret vanishing back into the satchel. Lothos then makes a gesture and a ball of flame appears right in the face of the creature. Sadly, the creature moves fast enough to avoid the ball of fire. The huge monster simply side-steps it. It thumps its club on its palm, waiting for the others to attack it. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 10. It is now Yngvild's turn! Godwyn is next! GAME: Note Flat-footed on Yngvild ended. GAME: Yngvild casts Bless. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 Yngvild's eyes widen a little at the sight of the Ogre, and the javelin that bounces off Godwyn's armor. Still there is no fear in her gaze only a wild kind of joy "ANGORON" she bellows to the heavens as she hoists her hammer high over her head "BEAR WITNESS. BLESS THESE HEROES AS THEY GO TO BATTLE" she says as a bright light engulfs those around her. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 3. It is now Godwyn's turn! Belladona is next! GAME: Note Flat-footed on Godwyn ended. Godwyn grimaced. "This... is not good." She took a good look around the area and took in a breath. "Brace yourselves! He's not alone!" She drew her weapon and grimaced at the ogre. "And that means we need to deal with him quickly." Godwyn glanced at his weapon. "Out of the question." With that, she charged forward and made her best attempt to make that club of his useless. <OOC> Godwyn says, "Power Attack + Furious Focus + Improved Sunder" <OOC> Benthus says, "It is a large club, Godwyn. Go for it." GAME: Godwyn rolls weapon5 +1: (7)+8+1: 16 <OOC> Benthus says, "Full plate armour, right, Godwyn?" <OOC> Benthus says, "60 feet. It think you would not reach it with a charge." Belladona watches Godwyn go charging in and she reaches down to cast another spell on Samafa to give her more strength. "Attack Samafa." She commands and looks to the others, "Careful there might be more then one." She winces as she watches Samafa get clobbered before she can attack and her attack easily misses. The ogre smiles as it sees Belladona's animal companion bound towards it. It raises its club for a downward swing, timing it just right. And as it gets within range. *WHOOMP!* The ogre smiles even more at the nearly-broken thing in front of it... GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Two - Init 19. It is now Bozo's turn! Lothos is next! GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+9: (19)+9: 28 GAME: Benthus rolls 1d4+8: (4)+8: 12 The ogre shifts its big bat to the side, looks at Samafa and grins. And then it kicks it hard, sending it all the way back to Belladona... <DM> Samafa is unconscious. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Two - Init 12. It is now Lothos' turn! Yngvild is next! GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20: (12): 12 (Ogre's Reflex roll vs Lothos Flaming ball, fail.) GAME: Lothos rolls 3d6: (11): 11 GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+5: (19)+5: 24 (Ogre's will save vs Lothos' evil eye, save.) Lothos watches the monster, and the fact it seems to ignore his flaming ball which he mentally scoots a little closer to the creature. As he does, he smiles at it, even waving. "Yoo hoo...over here...." He laughs at the creature, cackling. The ogre shifts its attention to Lothos for a moment, its brows' raised up uncomfortably. It seems to have put on its guard lesser than it did before. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Two - Init 10. It is now Yngvild's turn! Godwyn is next! GAME: Yngvild casts Aid. Caster Level: 3 DC: 15 <OOC> Yngvild says, "Converting aid to cure moderate" GAME: Yngvild rolls 2d8+3: (15)+3: 18 (Samafa is healed back to 7HP.) Yngvild hoists her hammer high and looks ready to charge in, when the battered flying body of a lioness lands almost at her feet. She blinks in faint surprise then holds up one hand to the heavens "IRON MOUNTAIN GRANT ME THY SUCCOR" she booms to the heavens as her hand starts to glow. With a clatter of armor she kneels down to lay her hand on the lioness, the glow shining from the beasts wounds as many of them close up and the others stop bleeding. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Two - Init 3. It is now Godwyn's turn! Belladona is next! Godwyn's attack doesn't even reach the creature's weapon. She does however get close enough to make another attempt, and does so with a resolute expression on her face. She had to do something to remove this problem from the fight. Fortunately for her, it appears to be a tad distracted... and that might have been just the thing she needed. <OOC> Godwyn says, "Improved Sunder, no Power Attack. Charging for effect." GAME: Godwyn rolls weapon5+1: (6)+8+1: 15 (Attack on Ogre misses) GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+9: (16)+9: 25 (Ogre AoO's Godwyn and hits) GAME: Benthus rolls 2d8+10: (11)+10: 21 GAME: You damaged Godwyn for 21 points. 18 remaining. The ogre is burnt by the ball of fire that is right beside it. It doesn't seem to understand why the bright thing is burning it and shifts a bit. But the ball seems to be following it. It smashes it with its club, but nothing happens. It scratches its back side as it gets burned some more. It gets frustrated and lets out its anger on Godwyn who happens to step into his club's range. Godwyn's eyes widened as her second attack does nothing to the oversized club... and a roar just about made her lose her hearing just before the ringing is accompanied by searing pain, along with a brief sense of weightless flight. GAME: NEW ROUND! Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Three - Init 22. It is now Belladona's turn! Bozo is next! <OOC> Belladona says, "I'll cast produce flame and throw some fire at the Ogre" GAME: Belladona casts Produce Flame. Caster Level: 3 DC: 13 GAME: Belladona rolls 1d20+5-4: (1)+5+-4: 2 (Attack on Ogre misses) "Samafa!" Belladona calls out as the ogre just bats her lioness away and she looks towards Yngvild as she heals Samafa, "Thank you for healing her." She takes a deep breath as she casts another spell to produce flame. She has to be careful not to hit Godwyn, but her aim is off and the flame just hits the ground about 10 feet in front of her, "Damn it." GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Three - Init 19. It is now Bozo's turn! Lothos is next! GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+9: (20)+9: 29 GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+9: (15)+9: 24 If there is anything that seems to have caught the attention of the ogre, it's the ball of flame that Lothos conjured up. And with a really massive heave of its huge club, it strikes the ball of flame and... nothing. The ball stays there, bright and warm. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Three - Init 12. It is now Lothos' turn! Yngvild is next! GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20: (3): 3 (Ogre's reflex roll vs Ball of flame) GAME: Lothos rolls 3d6: (13): 13 <OOC> Lothos says, "Witch Hex: Misfortune. "You know big fella, fate has a funny way of making your life bad. Karma and all that, bad things happen to people who do bad things..." GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Three - Init 10. It is now Yngvild's turn! Godwyn is next! <OOC> Yngvild says, "Okay move to within 30 of Godwyn and channel some healz." Things don't seem to be going quite to plan for the adventurers. Yngvild looks rather undaunted however as she marches foward to stand about midway between the lioness and Godwyn. The huge earthbreaker is raised up towards the heavens as her other hand grasps her holy symbol. Her towering form starts to glow with a bright holy light, the light radiating outwards to engulf her companions in healing warmth. GAME: Yngvild rolls 2d6: (10): 10 GAME: You damaged Godwyn for -10 points. 28 remaining. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Three - Init 3. It is now Godwyn's turn! Belladona is next! GAME: Godwyn rolls 2d6: (4): 4 (LoH) GAME: You damaged Godwyn for -4 points. 32 remaining. For a brief moment, she (Godwyn) couldn't get up. "Goddess preserve me..." She hissed as she brought a glowing right hand to the blue rose silhouette on her armor and drew the energy into herself. "That. Hurt." Now she was angry. And anger just made her more focused... Godwyn stood and readied her weapon again. She was still within striking distance, which meant she had a fair shot at getting rid of that damnable club that just slammed into her like a good sized horse. So she took in a breath and, with a prayer to Althea, struck at the club once more! GAME: Godwyn rolls weapon5+1: (10)+8+1: 19 (Improved sunder vs Ogre's club, fail) Godwyn growled as she missed yet again. "Right, enough of this!" She set herself and prepared to defend against his counter. "If I can't break your weapon... then Althea willing, I'll break YOU!" GAME: NEW ROUND! Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Four - Init 22. It is now Belladona's turn! Bozo is next! GAME: Belladona rolls 1d20+5-4: (16)+5+-4: 17 (Flame vs Ogre's touch AC, success) GAME: Belladona rolls 1d6+3: (2)+3: 5 Belladona looks at Samafa as the healer's power knits her back together, "Sorry I forgot how tough ogres are. Stay here and defend me." She winds up and she throws the flame again. This one sails over Godwyn's head and smacks into the ogre burning him. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Four - Init 19. It is now Bozo's turn! Lothos is next! GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+9: (4)+9: 13 (Hex: misfortune) GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+9: (5)+9: 14 The Ogre keeps pounding on the ball of fire to the point that it's club is on fire as well. It looks at Godwyn thinking that it would substitute for the ball of fire and attempts to smack her. But its seems to be having difficulty in keeping an eye on the paladin, shaking its head to clear its mind of the madness that Lothos has placed there. It smashes the ground a feet where Godwyn is standing. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Four - Init 12. It is now Lothos' turn! Yngvild is next! GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20: (19): 19 (Ogre reflex save vs BoF, Hex: Misfortune) GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20: (5): 5 (Ogre reflex save vs BoF, fail) GAME: Lothos rolls 3d6: (9): 9 The human giggles, laughing as the ogre deals with the attackers and the ball of flame, and his curse, that sadly no one can see. Finally the monster falls, and the ball of flame vanishes. Lothos grins, looking around, "Ok, there are definatly more around! And its possible survivors!" He giggles then....a little out of place actually. Godwyn huffs and falls to one knee. The blow still had her shaken... and it felt like she hadn't done anything but make it angrier. "We need to... we need to keep on watch for the others. There are..." She took in a breath, to try and steady herself. "...there are tracks leading away from the site. We need to find the others and make sure they don't hurt anyone else." She grimaced. "I'm sorry... I couldn't do much." Belladona kneels down in front of Samafa as she dismisses the flame. She rubs Samafa's ears gently, "Sorry about that. I think you might need to get some armor." The man has stopped laughing now, a bit more serious, and nods. "Yes, there are definatly more. Possible they took some alive for a snack later. Can anyone track? I have minimal skills at it." This of course, from Lothos. As the ogre bowls over dead, fried to a crisp by Lothos magic, the howl of two larger ogres can be heard as they sprint towards their fallen family member. They are not pleased. No, they are very, very upset. The bushes on their path get trampled under their feet and low lying tree branches snap at their passing. These two huge behemoths are as big and as their cousin that is dead. They will certainly want revenge... The ball of flame that Lothos brought to existence continues to stick with the ogre, despite the repeated battering it is taking from the monster's tree trunk size club. The ogre itself continues to bash the ball of flaming stuff, seeming not to know of any other way to get rid of the fiery sphere. And so the huge creature continues to get scorched by the roaring flames of the seemingly animate ball, and the effects begin to take a toll on the former thing. The ogre looks at its hands with a puzzled look. It can see it all charred to the bone. It can even see the bones of its fingers now. It looks at the ball of fire that seems to be bouncing animately in front of it. Like a dog trying to have fun with its master. Then its vision becomes blurry as his body has lost much of its moisture and the blood within had begun to congeal due to the heat. It shakes its head once, in disbelief. It probably didn't expect itself to go out like this. And then it keeled over, dead. As the ogre lies dead, the ball of flame stops bouncing, like it is wondering why the ogre is no longer playing with it. And then it winks out of existence. Just as when calm has returned to the clearing, a loud roar could be heard very close by. Two loud roars to be exact. And just at the edge of the clearing, the hulking shapes of two massive creatures can be seen crashing through the bushes and trees. They look mad. Very mad. And it looks like they are out for vengeance. The other members of the team split from Belladona for reasons not known and engage one of the ogres. The other ogre seems to be only interested in Belladona. or maybe her large cat. But in any case, it rushes towards her and starts clubbering her and her companion friend with it's oversized club. Well, it attempts too. The Duo evade as best as they can, but assistance would be a wonderful thing for them right now. Roars? LARGE roars? That sounds like something a sane person would run away from, especially when they were pretty much wandering around for no particular reason, collecting flowers. So, of course, Elspeth comes bounding into the clearing, all grins and curiosity. "Hey, hey, what's going--" she stops and stares, with flowers stuck in the joints of her armor (hey, it was easier than carrying them in her hand). "Wow. That's one big mama. Hey! Hey, pumpkin nose! Stop hitting people!" And now she's charging in, her sickles coming out and ready to help. Belladona has her claws ready and Samafa growls as the ogre seems to be coming after them. The orc druid has her claws out and ready as she brings up her shield and they wait for the ogre to come at them. She looks over at Elspeth, "Ogres attacking merchants." It really doesn't take much to activate Elspeth's heroism impulse. "Those fiends! Well, we can't let them keep doing THAT! Raaaaaagggh!" And then she charges through the brush...and /right smack into/ the ogre's ready attack. WHAM. The fighter goes flying back, with a crunch of bone and metal. She's nearly out of the fight, from the looks of the staved in chest. There are a lot of stuff littered on the ground where the wrecked carts and wagons are. Most fortunate for Elspeth, she lands in an area where a box full of healing potions are found... Well, two healing potions. The others are broken... GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Zero - Init 13. It is now Belladona's turn! Better Ogre is next! GAME: Belladona casts Bull's Strength. Caster Level: 3 DC: 14 (On Samafa) GAME: Belladona rolls 1d20+6: (7)+6: 13 (Samafa's charge vs Ogre) Belladona reaches down to cast a spell on Samafa and she points at the Ogre, "Attack." The lioness as she charges and goes to attack, but she misses. The Ogre had whacked Elspeth to one side and the swing leaves him open for the incoming lioness' charge. It seems to allow it to get near it and bite on an area that is as hard as steel. Well, the calloused area that is as tough as steel. In any case, the big cat's attack is thwarted. Which leaves the ogre with another thing to punt... GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round Zero - Init 12. It is now Better Ogre's turn! Elspeth is next! She tries to cast in a way that will protect her from being hit, but she messes up the spell. Spellcasting isn't her biggest strength. She growls and jams her hand into her claws. GAME: Benthus advances the initiative order. Round One - Init 12. It is now Better Ogre's turn! Elspeth is next! GAME: Benthus rolls 1d20+9: (1)+9: 10 (Ogre vs Samafa, miss) The big brute continues to swing its club like a golfer is swinging his... club. But all are met with failure. He draws a short rod, giggling and then speaking a few arcane words. An arc of electricity fires forth to the target and connects with his face. It holds there for a second as his eyes boil in thier sockets and he falls to the ground, his face smoking. "Well.....that was so quick."
