PrP: Live Catch
Tenebrae - Friday, June 06, 2014, 6:48 PM
The Explorers Guild offers a wide range of job types, some typical, some exotic. Animal capture isn't the most common sort of task, but is hardly unheard of. You've been directed to one of the side rooms in the Guild, where a pair of men wait nervously. The robes and pouches of reagents mark them to likely be of a wizardly profession.
Belladona isn't too happy about this capturing of wild animals, but she comes anyway to hear what this is all about. She moves in and heads towards one of the chairs to sit down.
Lothos has a rather unique set of talents, so a non-lethal is possible for him, but more as he assists others in dealing with the creature. Its not like he really fights very well anyhow.
Lorien arrives where he is supposed too, and makes his way to a place he can settle and listen, as he relaxes. He heaves out a thoughtful sigh.
After a few minutes to assume himself no more are comming, the elder of the two wizards (or at least the one with the longer beard) steps to the front of the room. "Alright, first, thank you all for comming. We're conduction a large scale study on the ecosystems of the Vast. While observation is the primary factor, we will be needing to directly measure some of the animals. As we're trying to observe the wildlife, not change it, this mission is to be as minimally invasive as possible. Capture, measure, and release, with as little harm or trauma as possible. Now, are there any questions at this point?"
Belladona listens closely and she leans forward, "Just what exactly are you looking for with these measurements?" She asks suspicious of these wizards and what they would want animals for.
Lothos frowns a bit, "Really? Just what are we capturing that you need measured? Are there rodents of unusual size?"
After being sent hereto assist the wizards by the Temple of Daeus at the last minute, Bor stands quietly in the back, listening to the plan of action for this particular foray into the Vast. He takes a moment to look around, and check for familiar faces. To the few he recognizes, he gives a nod in greeting, but waits for the Wizards response to the current questions before speaking up.
Lorien nods, "That's strange," he says, and then tilts his head a bit, back and forth, "But interesting."
Blue robes trimmed in silver adorn the priestess of Althea as she waits quietly, patiently behind the others. Dressed peacefully enough, at least on the outside, Eilora is carrying a large, master crafted Bill slung up to rest against one shoulder and fairly heavy armor is worn beneath the sky-blue robes of the healer's Goddess.
Wizard The Elder blinks at Belladona. "Knowledge, of course. The Vast is, as the name implies, quite vast, and there's much about it we don't understand. A better understanding of the animals which live there will help us to understand the land as a whole. With the various magics which perminate sections of the place, the term 'usual' is difficult to apply, in size or anything else."
Lothos nods, "I grew up in the vast, or at least a small part of it. Your going to need to be a bit more specific on location, or at least what critters you want measured."
Belladona hmms a little bit, "I see, just knowledge huh? You aren't going to do anything else with them right?"
Lorien nods, "That makes sense," he says, as he quirks a small smile and shifts on his hip a little, "The Vast."
Leaning back against the wall the Giantborn nods in agreemnt with Lothos, "Aye, what kind of animals are you lookin' to measure?" after a moments pause, Bor adds, "And we are talkin' about Animals, and not magical beasts or monsters or similar nasty creatures?"
"Even measuring squirrels, we should expect interesting thigns to potentially prey upon them, or be disturbed by our presence." Eilora points out, thinking as she falls silent again.
The younger wizard (or at least the one with less grey in his beard) coughs and steps foreward. "At this point our primary research lies with the stepps towards the north of the Vast. The magical flucuations there are minmal, and least likely to interfer with our efforts. We're intrested in any creature in the area, magical or mundane, but our target today is Aurochs; a large herd animal similar to cattle. It's their mateing season, so they've clustered into large groups. Hopefully this will make it easier to capture several for study."
Lorien chuffs, "Aurochs, they are a curious thing," he says, as he nods a little, and shifts, as he lifts his brow, "What are we keeping them with?" he asks, as he rolls his shoulders.
Lothos nods "Interesting choice, the hides aren't worth that much, though the horns are pretty nice. You don't want a sample, just some measurements?"
Belladona hmms, "Auroches can be tough creatures to handle, let alone subdue and keep still long enough to measure are we getting any help to do this?"
"Are you bringin' nets, and cages? Maybe some sleep darts or spells?" Bor asks, thinking about what it would take to capture or calm the Aurochs enough to make sure the wizards don't take a beating.
The pair look to each other for a moment and shrug. "We're aquisition and transportation. Any related equipment will be with our colleagues on site. Though if you'd like to get supplies before we teleport, we can wait for your return." The elders speaks up. "We've a lot of good rope...."
Belladona nods, "And when do you want us to go and how long are we going to be gone?"
Lothos chuckles, "Nothing I can think of, I'm ready to go whenever everyone else is."
Lorien nods, "That may help," he says, and then stands a little, waiting for anymore information.
"I'm ready to go." Eilora says, glancing to the others before leaning on her bill, her countenance serene.
"Aye, I'm ready..." Bor nods in agreement, "...we can see what you've got when we get out there. I don't plan on buyin' the gear."
Lorien says, "Me too."
"We leave and soon as you're ready, and return when you're done."
"Likely back before night. The guys at the base camp have been keeping watch of the herds."
Belladona hmms, "If we can wait until morning I can have spells better prepared to help with this task."
Lothos stands up, "Alright then, lets get this show on the road." He pauses to look at Belladona for a moment, then shrugs "I suppose that would be wise, nothing worse then a caster with the wrong spells."
Lorien stands up, and nods, "We can wait, and then be on our way," he says, as he smiles a little, and adjusts the strap of his rifle.
Another glance, and shrug. "We can head out now, and you can deside what you'd like to do once we get there. There's several groups, so tents and meals shouldn't be a problem, if you'd prefer to wait."
"We can take stock of what gear you have, how big the herds are, and if we can sperate a few from the group." Bor adds, looking at the others to see if they are ok with this plan, "Then in the mornin' we can put together our plan of attack on the Aurochs."
Belladona nods, "That sounds good to me then." She stands up and stretches out.
The teleportaion goes smoothly, landing you amid the great plains of the Vast. You arrive halfway up a gentle hillside, the camp at it's base. A large open sided pavillion sits at the center of the camp, with numerous tents and temporary structures in a loose circle around it. A handful of horses graze on tethers a short distance to the side. Perhaps a dozen people, most in wizardly robes, wander the camp on their own projects. Your arrival is quickly noted, but gains no real excitement.
Bor wanders down to the camp, looking at what gear may be available for the 'Catch and Release Operation', "Well Met, all. Any luck with the Aurochs? How big of a herd are we talkin' about? Any of them singled out from the rest? Any plans on how you would like to measure the animals?"
Lothos looks around after the teleportation, "You know, that was my first teleport, very interesting. So, whens supper?" He apparently has taken the idea they are starting tommorow seriously.
Lorien looks about with curiosity, "Well, it seems they do not have many defenders," he says, as he notes the majority of wizards from their arrival as he adjusts his military jacket. He heaves out a sigh, and then looks at the others with a nod, "Well, we should grab the supply perhaps," he adds.
from one place to another, Eilora blinks and then takes a few moments to orient herself to the new surroundings before propping her polearm against her shoulder amiably, waiting to see what the marching orders will be, or accomodations if they're to wait.
Belladona gets her companion before they teleport and she takes a deep breath. "Ugh I hate doing that." She shakes her head to clear it as her companion goes to sniff around. She starts to move down, "Some food would be good to help settle my stomach." She reaches into one of her pouches to get out some herbs to chew.
Many of the people in came don't know your answers, and a few, busy with their own projects, have no idea what you're talking about. But soon enough a fresh pair of faces join you, an elder lady and a young gnomish lad, apparently the ones intrested in the Aurochs. "No one is useing the tents there to the east just now, so feel free to claim one if you like. There's typically some stew on the firepit, but we havn't tried to keep any sort of formal meal time. Johnas and I have been scrying on one of the herds, the closest being about three miles from here at the moment. We'll try to keep tabs on it, but you'll have to improvise the details when you get there. We've these harness to hold the animals down once captured, but getting them into the harness is your task."
"Stew sounds good. Thank you." Bor replies back to the elderly lady, nodding his head in greeting. Before heading over to the place with the food, he asks, "In the Harness, and you'll be good from there? The herd you've been watchin'... do they seem skittish? I'm not the best at sneakin', and if we need to sneak up on them to keep them from runnin' away that'll be a challenge for me."
Lothos looks around for a minute, there is a twitching in a satchel he carries and he opens it to let a weasel climb out and scamper away among the tents. The human heads towards the stew, apparently going to eat and relax.
Lorien nods, "I could likely wrassle them," he says, and then smiles a bit as he makes his way on, and relaxes, "Thanks for information about the harness," he adds, and then settles about and waits with the group.
"My own calling is towards the healing arts and the footsteps of Althea." Eilora says thoughtfully as she follows after towards the food and the promise of shelter for the night.
Belladona hmms, "I can possibly try to empathize with them and get them to become friendly I also know of spells I can use to calm and charm animals as well as speak with them."
"It's a large herd, several hundred animals. Some are skitish, some are bold. We've seen a few predators around the edges, large cats, mostly but nothing particuarly dangerous."
Lothos points at Belladona with a spoon, "Sounds like a plan. Though we all know it never goes as simple as that, otherwise they would have just hired druids."
"That sounds like a good first plan!" Bor grins at Belladona, "We can let you have first go at gettin' a couple in the harnesses. If anythin' goes wrong, we can be there to back you up, and we'll keep an eye on the predators..." With a shrug of his shoulder, he says, "Food time, and then I guess we'll wait until tomorrow so everyone has got the spells they need?" If everyone is agreement, Bor will head towards the stew, and offer to dish out for everyone else before he takes a bowl for himself.
Belladona nods, "I shall do my best to help, but this will limit the potential spells I have for offensive use."
The night passess swiftly, and without major event. The accomidations are simple, but serve, the tents bare but able to keep the rain off from a brief shower near midnight. The stew is bland, but hearty, and there's plenty to go around. Come momrning, a couple fo adventures are teleported in for a different job, tasked to track down an uncommon sort of burrowing lizard. Their task taking them the opposite direction of your own. After a brief update on the Auroch's location, Johnas, the gnome, gives you a pair signal flares, to indicate when you've captured some animals. "Just hold the handel, hold it above your head, and pull the cord. ...er, don't look directly at it. Is kinda bright. If the first doesn't work, the second should."
Lorien nods at the gnome, "I can make them both work at double efficiency," he says, as he grins a little, and adjusts the strap on his rifle as he follows with the others of the group.
Nodding to Johnas, Bor looks to the others, "Ready? We give Belladona the chance to calm a few into harnesses away from the group? The rest of us can watch for the predators, or anythin' that tries to go at her while she's workin?"
Belladona has finished with her meditation and she nods as she flexes her claws before she puts them back on her belt, "Yes I'm ready to go." Samafa is by her side.
Lothos yawns, rubbing his eyes, "I suppose we should go do this and get paid." The weasel is now sticking his head out of the satchel Lothos carries. "So, lets hope fate favors us and this is all done by lunch."
Directions have you traveling though the rolling hills of the vast for a couple miles, before crossing a small stream, and climbing a gentle bluff on the far side. The top opens to a wide flat plain, where a massive herd of auroch can been seen in the distance. Or perhaps it's more accurate to say a great many small herds, as the animals tend to cluster into family units, which all happen to be in the same area.

As Belladona positions herself to work with the Aurochs, Bor stands back, but has his hammer ready in case something goes wrong. He tries to keep as still, and quiet as possible to not scare any of the skittish animals. He does, occasionally, look around to see if any of the predators can be seen lurking nearby.
Lothos moves with Bor, if one of them starts to attack, he can at least offer some kind of non-lethal assistance, or he can run, either way really. He watches as Bella moves in, but he senses things may not go as smoothly as planned.
The chosen auroch group seems calm, but as the group approaches, one animal sudden lifts its head in your direction, and begins to rapidly trot off. The other animals turn to follow, not quite alramed, but wary.
<OOC> Lorien says, "What should Lorien do to approach another group?"
<OOC> Mikilos says, "lorien, you can try approching a diffrent group, but you'd have to move a fair distance from the rest of the party. A stealth or survival role can get you close-ish."

Belladona watches as the auroch moves off and she looks at the others, "Perhaps you should let me try alone." She speaks to Samafa to guard the others as she casts a spell on herself. She moves forward slowly towards the auroch, "Peace be with you my animal brethren. I am Essence Belladona of the Earth Warders. My friends and I mean you no harm, we would just like to learn about you."
Lorien just moves towards another group as he makes more noise than should even be possible while being stealthy, his hand adjusting his military jacket.
Lothos remains quiet, and just shrugs, letting the lady do her naturey thing.
The Auroch are not fooled by Lorien's attempts to blend with the grass. Grass doesn't walk at them. Belladona's attempt at diplomacy fairs slightly better, one of the bull auroch peering her direction and replying. 'Ones of Fang and Claw want learn too. Learn taste. You scary Two Leg.'
Lorien makes his way near enough with the group that they can rush forward if required. he then looks about curiously and towards the animals, as he considers. He notices the others, THEN made his way to the aurochs. Either way, he notes one of the Aurochs and tries to mimic a mating call or somthing.
Bor continues to stand back with Lothos, and watching the other two move about the various groups of Aurochs.
Lothos looks to Bor, "You know, if we didn't care about hurting a few, we could spend a little time digging a pit, cover it up, trick them towards the pit, bam, easy catch."
Belladona nods, "I will make sure that no one hurts you so long as we are here to learn about you. You have my word on it." She says she continues to move closer towards the bull.

The bull snorts and paws the ground, shuffeling several steps away at Belledona's casting. "What you do? Why you do that? You scary, Two Legs."
Lothos speaks up a bit, not too loud, but enough that Bella can hear him. "Um, if your trying to cast a spell on them, I might be able to help, just letting you know." He pulls out a pack of tarot cards from a pocket, starting to shuffle them.
"Aye," The Giatborn rumbles as quietly as he can, "Could knock a couple on the head too... might be easier..." Bor grins, but nods to Belladona, "..but I'm thinkin' not everyone would like that plan."
Belladona tries to cast a spell to charm the bull, "I was just casting a spell to be more friendly to you. I don't want to hurt you or any in your herd I promise you no more spells." She looks over at Lothos, "No spells please." She looks back over towards the bull, "No one here wants to hurt you. You have my word as a druid of the Earth Mother."
Lothos shrugs, looking to Bor, "How long we going to let her try? I mean, its possible we get nothing out of this attempt. Whats our backup plan?"
Lorien watches the Aurochs and then growls a little as he tries to march his way towards one of the groups, and then crouches a little low, even if they would back up or run, "Come on, I'm challengin' ya, think you can take me?" Good ideas of the day.

"I'm thinkin' of lettin' her try until she's had enough." Bor responds to Lothos, "Once that's done, we might have to try to knock a few over the hard way..." Hefting his hammer, he says, "...I'm decent with this, I think I can keep from causin' any real injuries. Or we can try to roll a few over as long as they don't stampede..."
Lothos grins, "You know they sleep standing up, just like cows. You wait till they are asleep, go up to them, and push them over. Kids do it all the time, although these guys are likely going to require two people to push over, kinda big."
The bull snort and rolls his eyes again, but shuffles a few steps closer to Belladona. "What do you want, Strange Two Leg?"
As Lorien offers a challenge, the female auroch shuffles away. But a bull edges between, nudging the female away and imposeing himself between her and this strange creature.
Lorien looks at the bull as it approaches. He then slams his fist towards his chest as he raises a bit from his crouch, "They call me Lorien Valiant, and I'm here so that I can take one of your herd." It may not even understand but the intention is clear, ashe holds his hands out a little and growls.
Belladona moves a little closer to the bull, "I told you we want to learn about you, just take some measurements for some wizards. I promise nothing will hurt you."
"What is wizard, Strange One? You weird." The bull still seems nervous, but is allowing the continued approach.
The second bull tosses it's head, eye rolling as it looks at Lorien. This crazy furless thing might be a danger to his herd. He's not about to let that happen.
"Hrm..." Bor grunts in response to Lothos, "...can't say I've heard of that... but sounds like it's a good way for kids to get themselves crushed." Keeping an eye on Belladona, Bor also takes a moment to look around, and get an idea where Lorien is since it appears he's lost track of him.
Lorien considers for a moment, and then holds up a finger, as he reaches about and grabs a compass. He then checks the directions, pockets it, and then nods a little at the bull, smiling, "Okay, don't worry though, we only kind of require measurements, but I've been wishing for a round if you'd oblige me," he adds.
Lothos shuffles his deck, then starts flipping cards from the bottom to the top, making little noises, hrm, hmm, stuff like that. "Drat, my girlfriends going to break up with me."
Belladona hmms, "Well there are wizards that want to learn about you and we are trying to help them." She says as she moves a bit closer to the bull, "It won't hurt, the wizards just want to know how big you are. They are weird like that always measuring things, but you are a fine looking bull."
Friendly bull, who we'll call Bill, since you couldn't pronounce what he calls himself, snorts again, but stays where he is. The pair of females remain on the far side from Belladona, but havn't run off.
Lorien's opponent, whom we shall call Arnie, Arnie the Auroch, tries stamping his feet and rolling his head, showing off his sharp horns. Maybe that will intimidate the strange creature away.
Lothos shuffles his deck again, looking to Bor, "I shall tell your fortune now....cause I'm bored." He starts flipping cards, "You are going to suffer a blow to the head soon.....Wait, wait.....your going to hit someone else in the head..." He turns the card upside down, tilting his head, "Well its one of those."
Lorien crouches a little, and then rears back as if trying to show his dominance to the bull, and then stamps his own foot on the ground as he takes his fingers and pretends he has the same kinds of horns. He's doing great so far with his. Well. Whatever it is. He likes Arnie, this guys got gusto. Maybe Lorien is the one whom Bor will hit in the head.
Belladona moves a little bit closer to the friendly Bill, "Is there anything that I can do to reassure you that we are only here to measure how big you and the other auroch are and then we will leave you alone. No pain, no getting hurt, no one chasing after you or your females."
Bill the Bull snorts again. "Claw and Fang not pacient. Attack quick. Two Legs not like them. You okay."
Arnie the Auroch, on the other hand, has quite a different opinion. Lowering his head, he charges at Lorien.

As he draws close to the Auroch, he uses his hammer like a battering ram, attempting to bash the large bull unconscious instead of dead. His well timed blow lands solidly, hopefully with enough force to turn the bull's attention away from the injured man.
Belladona winces a little bit as she can see from afar what's going on, but she tries to block Bill's view. Arnie tosses and twists, fighting against the man holding him. For one brief instant, it look like he might slip free, but just then the auroch's hoof mysteriously slips, throwing him off balence again.

GAME: It is now Lothos' turn! Lorien is next!
The Giantborn Paladin frowns slightly as he positions himself in a better position across from Lorian the Auroch Wrestler. Still trying to not cause too much harm to the beast, Bor rears back with his hammer, and jabs it again in the side. "A solid squeeze might knock it out, Lorien..."

He draws another card, looking at it and throwing it on the ground. "And now, it seems your fortune has taken another turn for the worse, you just drew the joker my large friend." More evil chuckeling.

Lorien growls out as he tries to keep Arnie pinned, blood still dripping from him as he does so. He heaves out a sigh and pants as he wrassles the bull to the ground and then manages to pin him fully, "Keep him distracted!" he exclaims, and it seems like he's trying to take it on himself while the others do their work.
Arnie, poor fellow, snorts and struggles, trying to free himself from these strange two legged creatures. But alas, the auroch is unable to gain his freedom.
While Lorien has Arnie smashed onto the ground, Bor drops his hammer, and quickly pulls out one of the available harnesses. As he gets to work tying him up, he'll ask Lorien, "Once we get him under control, you need some healing for that gut wound?"
<OOC> Mikilos says, "Okay, so Bill is still friendly, Arnies is tied up, and no one is dead yet!"
<OOC> Mikilos says, "that ends combat, unless someone plans to make another combat action?"
Lothos watches as the auruch is subdued, and he stops laughing. He coughs a few times, clearing his throat, "Ok, so, that went well....I suppose." He moves over to start picking up the tarot cards he was tossing around, they really don't do anything, its more just something for show.
Lorien grunts as he rolls backwards and off the tied up auroch, as he adjusts his bloody military jacket. Then he reaches about and grabs a vial of golden liquor which is fine and coarse as he pours it on the wounds with a wince. It should seal them up enough that he will be okay, "Ugh," he says, and if he can, he proceeds to take measurements, or something.
Belladona continues to measure the bull and she talks softly to it to help keep is calm. She continues her measurements and remembering the measurements she takes.
Lothos looks around, "So, how many have we measured? And did you measure its...um..." he coughs, "They don't need to know that do they?.....I'm not doing it."
Lorien looks at Lothos, and squints, as he measures a few cows if they don't run off. Then he takes a flare and shoots it off when he's done with his own measuring at least.
"Think we need to call the wizards to do whatever measuring they want..." Bor rumbles to the group, and nods as Lorien fires off one of the flares.
The noise and light of the flare startle the auroch, the surrounding herds moving well away. Bill and his two females start and stamp, but don't run. Arnie stays put, but isn't happy about it. Frank, the tiger sneaking up on the commotion through the tall grass, desides he really isn't that hungry, and get the heck out of here.
Lothos watches the signal, "Nice." He looks around, as the aurochs start to move away. "Ok, well, hopefully this takes care of what we needed to do, and we only had some minor injuries."
Belladona whoas and she looks over her shoulder, "A little warning next time please!" She calls back and looks over towards Bill, "It's okay it's just a signal for the wizards to come to do the measuring."
Bor nods in agreement, "Aye. Guess it could've been worse... Thank Daeus it was only one of them that felt like bein' the boss..." He glances in Lorien's direction, making sure everything healed up fine, and waves in Belladona's direction in apology.
Lorien looks at Arnie, whom he seems to have kept captured. He then notices a tiger and points at it, "Well, it looks like it was a good thing we fired it off," he says, and seems amused, and calls towards Belladona, "Okay, sorry!" He wishes he could keep Frank as a pet. He waves it away though. They will meet again.
Johnas the gnome and his companion arrive several minutes later via horseback. Their version of measurements largely involve having the auroch hold still while they point some sort of crystal it it and mutter a spell. More directly measurments are taken with a simple measureing tape, but neither spellcaster seems to find that too important. Hair samples are collected, as well as a quick blood sample; the auroch barely notice the tiny pinprick. Soon enough, the pair are finished. "Thank you. The guys back at the camp can transport you back, and the Guild will take care of your payment."
Lothos watches all this, then nods, "Excellent, I have to get back soon so my girlfriend can break up with me. The cards are never wrong."
"Sounds good. Glad we could help..." Bor replies back, smile on his face despite the commotion of the afternoon, "...been an honor to work with you all." He adds as he looks at the small adventuring group, "If you all need me you can find me at the Temple or any of the Taverns."
Lorien nods at Lothos, as he asks if he can have a crystal measurer, then adds, "That was wonderful, Eluna guide you all," he says, as they make their way on.
