*Summary: Lady Neva... let's say a noble from a far away land ... has made herself at home in Alexandria. She finds it very cute, and she is in pursuit of a certain set of individuals. There's something about a play.</div>

Eztli was not exactly the most studious sort under the majority of circumstances, and while she was not completely absent from the library, it was rare she spent any significant amount of time in the district that did not involve finding someplace odd to sleep. This time however, the sorceress found herself exiting the arcanist's society, having recently finished a lecture she had been asked to attend. "I'm not really sure what they expected me to tell them about using magic in all honesty, Hopefully that went well enough." She grumbled loudly to herself, making her way out into the plaza.

Carver comes out from the shadow of the statue of the great sage, lasting memorial to a great figure of history. At her side is her ever-present companion, Deathless, as the pair patrol the street in pursuit of a criminal; on-the-hunt even admist the city. She goes very few places now without her weapons, relinquishing them really only when the local security demands it for entry.

The pair cut toward the library, knowing that the sorceress's prestigous arcane speech was scheduled to be wrapping soon.

It's been sometime since Aelwyn has made his way to this district - he and books, after all, do not typically mix - but today the ruddy sith-makar has made an exception. With his red ribboned horns and his flaimng bopping with each step,he made his way towards the sorceress. "Spelldancer! Huntress!" He greets with a flash of his teeth and a bow of his head.

Eztli's expression brightened considerably as she spied one, two, and three familiar faces. "Heya Carver! Good to see you, holding up okay?" The makari wondered as she stretched on the tips of her toes to kiss the ranger on the cheek. "Lecture went well, I think! I've never done one like that before, I think I'd like to go in more prepared if I have to do that again, though. But what about you? And hey Aelwyn, it's been a while! How's our local knight doing today?" She laughed.

Carver smiles back at Eztli, as she is actually on time. Not always the case when one deals with academics. She thought on what she wanted to say. How it was good to see her, or that she was fine.

Maybe even something daring like if she was hungry. Aelwyn arriving stalls any question with a nod of greeting, adjusting her bow up higher on the shoulder.

The ruddy draconian makes a face at Eztli. "A /Dragoon/," Aelwyn corrects, sticking to his claim, until the very end. "Then a knight-errant." He exposes his teeth then in a sharp, menacing grin - before he freezes suddenly, spinning around. "That was strange." He glances around the area for a moment, before he turns to look back at Eztli and Carver.

Finally, he takes in a deep breath. "This one believes they may have found a potential star for a certain play." His grin was about to split his skull in half, considering how wide it was.

And then... there's a halfling. Dressed elegantly, all smiles, accompanied by a human sized knight in plate armor with their features cocnealed. The knight moves a little awkwardly, but it's surely the weight of the armor, and not at all because he's three kobolds in a suit of plate armor trying their best.

Aelwyn, of course, will immediately recognize the halfling and who, and more importantly what, she is.

"Hello again, child," she tells the sith-amakri, "I hope you've been practicing your dancing. This must be the Eztli you mentioned, yes?" She stares up at the other one, eyes big and round with excitement. Where did she even come from?!

"Well, seems like something's had you on edge recently, Carver. Let me know sometime, alright? If there's anything I can do, just shout." Eztli added with a smile to Carver, before her attention was turned back to Aelwyn. "You did? Like, actually, honest to goodness? How did you manage to do that, tell me everything, please!" She half-rambled, stopped by the arrival of someone else. "Oh, uh, yes, that's me, Eztli! Nice to meet you miss, what can I do for you?"

"There's a lot." Carver answers, "More than I feel comfortable goin' too much into." Her eyebrows creep inward at Aelwyn's strange declaration before both shoot up at the arrival of the small woman and her very subtle, well-disguised entourage. Very expressive brows. Her lips form a thin line as she is not the subject at question here, gloved fingers rubbing together as she observes this unlikely meeting.

Aelwyn tilts his head towards Carver - he wondered if there was ever a moment the ranger wasn't on edge - but then he holds up his hand towards Eztli. "Ah, it was an ordeal, but perhaps one should-" He begins, already preening his own feathers, before he suddenly stops. His expression changes - to twisting his lips. It was the child comment. He flashes his teeth, turns around, and with an exaggerated sweeping gesture of his arm.

"Spelldancer and Huntress, may one be introduced to Lady Neva." He declares, then halts at the sight of the armour. "And..." He opens his mouth, closes it. "Plates."

The Dragoon's orange eyes turn towards Eztli. <"Lady Neva is quite interested in your play, Spelldancer."> He tells her, in his thickly accented draconic.

"Yeeees," says Lady Neva, smiling at Aelwyn. "I appreciate the introduction. Now, children, what's all this about a *play*?"

Her eyes flash orange fire, draconic power smoldering within her briefly revealing due to her excitement.

"I do so love a play."

She would hate to be disappointed.

"That bad, huh? All the more reason for me to hear you out at some point, Carver." Eztli sighed, giving Carver's hand a squeeze. "Oh! Well, I'm not a child, neither is Aelwyn, we're just small, sorry for the confusion." Eztli corrected, turning her attention to Aelwyn as he switched dialects. "Well, it's a dance and a play, if that makes sense, but well, I haven't really been able to start production, at the moment. It's a famous play from Dragoneir you see, but I haven't been able to find a dragon to reprise the role of Elthridax. Without one, the whole play just makes no sense, you know?"

Carver gives a squeeze back of Eztli's hand, a short spiteful bit of pride at her standing her ground but also a warning once she recognizes the name. "I was under the impression that you did not care to travel much these days, er, Lady Neva." She gives Aelwyn a very flat stare over the 'halfling' head. For some reason, she is convinced this is somehow his fault.

She cannot fault her calling them children when even Eztli's longer life is but a breath in comparison. She didn't know much of this play. She had seen the firedance, of course, but not grasped its cultural meaning very well. "Very... happy to have you here." She doesn't bother putting a lot of emphasis on happy.

The ruddy draconian's lips twist again. "We are not short." Aelwyn tells flatly to Eztli, before he turns towards Carver and in a completely ignorant fashion, tilts his head in a 'what' motion. Surely this was not a fault, nor a mistake in any fashion. It was going to be glorious! Even if Neva's eyes were spitting fire.

"Huntress and this one met Lady Neva in search of other knowledge," He explains to Eztli, in case she wasn't familiar. "And this one believes Lady Neva could have quite plenty to contribute to this play." He attempts. If makari could wink, he would be doing so.

The knight stiffens. Saluting, see, after Lady Neva's introduction.

"Ah! I KNOW THAT ONE. I have read every one of the author's plays! You're in luck! Your *star* has arrived."

Lady Neva preens. "Oh, I do love an audience."

She begins to enthusiastically cite lines in draconic from a play, declaring to the world the majesty of fang and claw, of wings and scales, and their glorious world they leave changed with every beat of their wings.

"Yes, I know what you're insinuating, Aelwyn, I'm not stupid, I know what kobolds smell like for one thing. And it's incredibly, incredibly poor taste to point out before they bring it up themselves." Eztli huffed. "And, by the gods, thank you, Aelwyn, thank you so much!"

Perhaps she had spoken slightly too soon, however, as she listened a bit more. "Yes! They've made so many excellent recitals and plays, but the requirements make them impossible to put on."

Aelwyn leans back. "This one did not point at anything." He protests, but then flashes his teeth. "Ah, this one cannot accept _all_ of the praise, Huntress did lead the path." He gestures towards Carver.

Then Lady Neva enthusiastically starts her performance. He was actually not _extremely_ familiar with the play itself - beyond the fact that it had dancing - so he gives a fairly nonplussed look. A modernist play? He looks at not-kobolds in plate armor, Plates, then ignores them and gives Carver a look. "Quite the display, yes?" He asks from her, questioningly. "It will be a play to remember." Flash of teeth.

Neva looks most pleased with the reactions. Especially Eztli's thanks. She grabs Eztli's hand thereafter and says, "This will be the -- hm, what is the saying. The beginning of a beautiful partnership! We must discuss this at length! And find an appropriate space to contain my radiance." She glances up towards the sun.

f"Though it is perhaos best if we do not alert your government of me just yet. Let's keep it a SURPRISE."

She's very happy about this idea. Surprising everyone with her GLORIOUS nature.

"Oh! Well, yes, we'll need to have a lot of rehearsals, but I hope that it will be alright." Eztli sighed. "I'll need to say something to the watch before I actually put on a show however, it's required for it to take place. I hope that won't cause too many issues. And it's important people know what to expect, right?"

In spite of her excitement, she really wasn't sure what to make of everything, now.

Aelwyn flashes his teeth brightly. "The surprise; the thrill of a performance, the very edge of reality and imagination." He walks around Eztli and pats her shoulder. "This is why one hires law years. Let us focus on the play itself, to make it a moment to remember!" He encourages, then leans in to whisper. "The damages can be worried over later."

"The Dragoon bows his head at the group though. "This one shall depart momentarily, but this one is sure Spelldancer shall do fine getting one acquainted with the city, Lady Neva." And with that, the ruddy sith-makar steps along the square, to head towards one his mysterious destinations.

"Oh yes. Don't think I have forgotten to say thank you, good sir. I have LONGED to perform and it has been ages!" Neva grabs Eztli's arm, and wraps her own around it!

"Come, my delightful little friend," she says and despite her being presently shorter than Eztli, one can't really diaagree with her, "We have SO MUCH to discuss."

There was so much Draconic, flashing rapid fast between the three parties. To Carver? Mostly nonsense so she watches their faces mostly for clues. Of how this unexpected arrival of star talent was going. She does squeeze the sorceress hand to impart courage and solidarity.

In tradespeak, ?We are happy to have you here. I think we will, of course, work to make you and your friends stay as comfortable as possible.?

Eztli turned back and smiled to Carver, squeezing the hand back before letting go. "Yes! I hope we will be able to work together on this. You want to come with us to discuss it, Carver? What about you, Deathless?" She asked of the two. "I've got a lot to go over with them, but I understand if you want to do something else."

Lady Neva now turns her eyes on Carver for a moment. Her eyes narrow in thought. Deep breath. "You seem familiar but I can not say we have met. Why is that?" Sniff. Sniff sniff.

Carver looks to Deathless with an apologetic eye, the patient horse simply flicking an ear. With all the stress of their storied guest, she had forgotten she was there.

"I guided Aelwyn, and the Deathsinger party, to your abode. I left in their care a blanket threaded with gold. It no doubt carried my scent as well as Deathless. She is my horse."

The noble steed bows her head, seemingly unprompted.

"Oh, is this who you were talking about before?" Eztli wondered, tilting her head a bit. "That would make sense, then. Again, it is nice to meet you, and I hope that we will be able to work together on this endeavor. It's been a dream of mine for some time now to put on this play, and I think that if there are any people from Dragoneir still around, it'd lift their spirits to not see it forgotten."

*Summary: The winter months are not known for forest fires, but disturbing rumours of spontaneous blazes on the outskirts of some of the northern farmlands of Alexandria recently need investigating. Suspecting some manner of supernatural intervention, the guild of explorers are dispatching a band of adventurers to see what they can find out about the source of these unusual conflagrations.</div>

Forest fires are something that the rangers out of the grove or Mictlan, or the local militias usually deal with. But forest fires don't usually strike in the midst of a weeks-long snowfall, and the local militas are ill equipped to deal with fires of a less than natural origin, whether that be wanton arsonists or something more deliberate, perhaps even supernatural. As such, the Guild of Explorers have been asked to investigate. And a bill has been posted at the Fernwood, the guild itself, and other establishments around the city.

Volounteers are requested to meet at the north gates, to begin their journey along the main trade path until they clear the northern farmlands where these sudden blazes have been spotted. The path here is so well trodden that the snow barely had time to settle before it is stomped under foot and hoof and wheel into a slurry of gravel and slush. The roads further afield are reportedly growing more and more difficult to navigate by the day, and the extended snowfall that was at first seen as a curiosity is gradually becoming a problem.

But it is not the problem the adventurers are hired to solve today. They get underway without any trouble, and the muddy path is easy to follow for now. The air is brisk and cool, and there is a light wind. And of course, the snow still falls.

Harshad is a city boy. He's never made any bones about it. But even he knows idiots setting random fires is a bad thing. And how the hells are they setting forest fires in the middle of a snowy winter?

Well, the answers are out there, and there might be coin in the making for them. So Harshad is wrapped up in a heavy cloak, hood pulled up over his head and gloves on over his hands. The half-oruch's eyes are contemplative, as he practices with a oddly-curved knife in one hand, spinning it back and forth in his grasp from upward to downward and back again.

Jutting from his mouth is a lit pipe, and the faint scent of tobacco lingers around him as he puffs quietly.

So much snow. Bryn isn't used to alot of preciptitation or the cold, but she weathers it well enough with a few fur wraps on arms and legs. Slogging along through less than ideal terrain? That she's accoustomed to.

"I get wantin ta stay warm... but settin the whole place afire don' seem the smartest thing ta me. Gettin cooked ain' no better'n gettin froze." She looses a short laugh as she walks. "They need better aim fer the middle."

Strange fires out in the middle of winter were certainly cause for concern. But that just mean people like them needed to go out and do something about it! Or at least, figure out what was going on, so someone else could figure out the rest.

Reithak, one of the adventurers hired, was in relatively good spirits. "No, it's not good idea at all. Best we stop them before they burn down the forests." The large egalrin nods.

Unnatural forest fires. Deep snow. Even worse - Crik did not have a white cloak. The corvid looking egalrin - or, the bundle of rags and cloaks that cover the egalrin - was furiously scribbling into his notebook. The paper was constantly wiped clean from the snow, which caused most of the ink to simply smear. Didn't seem to stop Crik though, who lets out a characteristic sounding 'crik' from his throat.

"It was set on fire?" Crik suddenly asks, raising his head. "... did the forest not simply set fire on itself?" He looks down at the mostly ink stained page he was writing on, and then furiously starts rubbing at it. "... arson... not fire of unknown origin..." He sounded so disappointed as he rewrote his notes, too.

"I can't feel my legs." Beat. "I can't feel my *toes*. Oh gods of my father, I knew I should have gotten the Dwarven wool socks."

That is from one Skyler Skywalker, (former) sky pirate and adventurer extraordinaire... who's toesies are apparently getting frost-bitten. The human is in his usual winter attire, great-coat lined in wool shearling, bifurcated mittens, and a knit woolen hat with ear flaps and a tie under his chin with a scarlet poof on top. He's not even attempting stealth, although the dark brownish-red of his coat is surprisingly subdued even in the snow. He's got his buckler on his arm, and scimitar hilt peeking from his back.

He glances at the birdman, shrugging one shoulder, "Figured it'd be too wet to catch, but I'm not the most woods-wise. Jar?" And he glances over at his emotional support witchman for confirmation.

Jarik was only too hapy to take a trip out into the woods, even if those woods did happen to be on fire. He is not a city boy, and Alexandira was beginning to get a little stuffy for his sensibilities. The chance to go out, even in the cold is eagerly taken. He trudges through the snow in mostly silent contemplation, one hand keeping the fur cloak in place against the wind.

"No, forests don't usually go up in flames unless its been particularly dry." He replies as Skyler inquires in his direction, his eyes flicking towards the man, then back out onto the trail.

Though muddy, the roads are packed hard and well kept enough close to the city that the going is not particularly tough until the nearest city-supporting settlements- mills and cooks and pigstys and things like that, that do well to be near the city- give way to more rural fields, mostly empty given the winter months though a handful of them sport hardy bianual plants that can go to bulb in the winter ready for spring harvest in the new year. The snow gradually encroaches further and further onto the track until it eventually becomes a suggestion more than a trail, a ridge of slightly higher ground mostly devoid of shrubs and larger rocks.

In the distance, through the clear air, the very edges of the great northern forests can be seen, beyond more fields and pastures. And further still, rising from somewhere within that forest, is a plume of smoke- at this distance, the plume seems like a stationary dark streak carelessly blotted across the horizon like spilled ink.

"If ye get it hot 'nuff, that'd dry it out, eh?" Bryn posits, looking to Jarik, then around at no one in particular. "Maybe its another big magic beam from the temple? Or somebody that likes fire? Or magic? Magic fire?" She shrugs.

Then she points at the dark streak in the distance. "Least the burnin ain' hard ta find. Looks like one over there."

Harshad shrugs at Bryn. "You tell me. I don't really do magic." He taps his pipe out, watching the hot ash extinguished by the snow. "Pretty sure you're not going to set a fire without some help though, not in this weather."

As he stows his pipe, his eyes narrow at where Bryn is pointing. "Yeah, that's kinda obvious. Why don't we go over and see what's happening? I can appreciate gettin' warm as much as anyone else but you don't need to burn down a bunch of trees for it." He loosens his rapier in its sheath as well, just in case.

"Well, looks like we at least have one place to start with, yeah? Good fortune for us, not that it's too hard to find a big patch of burnt forest, really." *Reithak chuckles, shading their eyes and peering in the direction of the plume. "We've got directions, 'fraid we're going to have to go off trail. Hope you all got some warm pairs of boots! At least till we get where it all got burnt. I don't have that much sympathy, it's real inefficient, compared to just chopping them down. Waste of life, selfish, nah."

Crik lets out a long exhale, finally shutting off his notebook, with several red strings tangling from it. The corvid then lets it fall into his sleeve. "... most likely someone started a fire, but their chimney was packed with snow." He says, looking like he was about to raise his hands in despair. He definitely misread the job description. "The insulation filled with dried crops, too to the brim. Nearby larder with oil caught fire. The snow keeps the nearby firewood pile dry..." The corvid starts to babble, as he continues on making his way - though briefly pausing to flicker his black tail from the worst of the snow.

"What do you think the chances are that whoever started the fire did it accidentally? 'Oops, sorry, I was making a mug of tea and it just got out of control! My bad! Tea?'" The reformed pirate purses his lips as he glances over the snowy expanse, pale grey-green eyes lingering on the smoke, "I could use a good cup of hot tea. With honey. And booze." Jarik is familiar with his tendency to ramble, and possible his other new best friend Bryn (they killed gnoll and witch together! BFFs!) but even though his eyes seem devoid of rational thought and his mouth is going a mile a minute even the relative strangers in this little party can tell he's not letting it distract him. "If it wasn't so cold, I'd suggest sending Greywing to scout." He says in response to Bryn, even as he gingerly shakes the snow off one boot and hops on the other foot. "If it's magic fire, I bet they'll over-boil the tea leaves. We should go stop them, right? Only thing worse than no tea is overly bitter tea."

He blinks at the corvid, and lifts his knit cap to run a hand through auburn hair. "So... no tea?" And to Harshad, he nods grimly and ties his knit cap in place with the tasseled ties under his chin. "I'm still hoping for tea. A nice dandelion tea, with some single-flower honey and a good oak barrel aged whiskey."

"Green wood doesn't like to burn without help." Jarik confirms with a nod, his eyes shifting towards Crik as he nods his agreement. "A hut or cabin going up in flames is more likely. Old wood, dry thatch." The mud doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest, in fact he just seems to stride along it like it's solid ground, the snow provides more of an impediment. He lifts a hand a spreads his fingers with a, "Whoosh."

He cranes his head to look up into the gray sky, then lets out a soft whistle. After a moment, a small brown and gray owl drops out of the snow to perch on Jarik's shoulder, reaching out to nip his ear. In response he pulls up his hood over both his head and the owl, which burrows into it with a soft hoot. "Tea? I could go for some spiced cider myself. And a hot bath." He lets out a disgruntled sigh. "I'm getting to spoiled in that city."

GAME: Jarik rolls survival: (16)+6: 22

Though heading towards the plume as the crow flies would indeed take them off the main path, Jarik is able to find a smaller less traveled path despite the snow- even though it's little more than a gravel trail buried under the snow, it does at least provide the party with a firmer subsurface to walk on and avoids most of the brush and bramble which encroaches towards the road in other places. Still, though, traipsing through the snow is tiring work.

As they draw nearer to the source of the smoke, Jarik notices something else as well- the smoke plume is moving. At first, it could have been dismissed as the wind, but the fact the wind is little more than a light breeze and the shape of the plume tips him off. It's less of a wildfire burning through the woods, and more of a patch of fire and smoke that seems to be moving but not spreading- whatever is causing this fire is mobile, and localized, and the snow and live hydrated wood prevents the fires from raging out of control.

Traveling towards the fire, Harshad looks at Skyler. "Sorry, best I can do is a skin full of weak wine. Safer than the water in some places." He snorts, rubbing his thumb along his jawline, eyes flicking past to Jarik. "Yeah, everyone says 'spoiled' till they gotta spend a night outside, then it's 'maybe city life ain't so bad'..."

As the group approaches, Harshad squints at the fire. "...Am I seeing things or is that fire moving around? I feel like something's not right here..."

"Eh? No, you aren't wrong, that smoke is definitely moving." Reithak mutters. "I mean, course smoke moves, the hot ash particles tend to do that with the hot air rising, I mean, the source of the smoke is moving, or something."

Reithak stops to shake her head. "Seems like what we're looking for might still be active. On your guards folks, not sure what we'll run into out there."

The mention of smoke moving makes Crik perk up. He quickly gets a _really_ long piece of wire from one of his cloaks, and holds it up to the sky, standing completely still. "... yes, it is moving." With another flutter of his tail, he hops along after the party, starting to write into his notes. "... not unknown fire sentient... question mark..." He quietly whispers by himself.

"Huh..." Bryn tries to peer ahead, too, but doesn't notice all that much. "Maybe somebody set themselfs on fire ta stay warm? Now they runnin 'round tryin'a put it out? That sound more like something ta happen then a buncha snowy trees going up ablaze." She turns her head to sort of look sidelong at Crik. "Or maybe its some kinda living fire, yeah..." Somebody self-immolating still sounds more likely to her, but she looses the strap on her long curveblade just in case.

"Definitely moving." Jarik agrees, holding up his hand with his thumb out to the side in an L, much as Crik uses his wire. "It's not completely moving with the clouds. A bit off. A flaming wagon? But that'd fall apart before too long.."

He pauses in thought. "Elemental on the loose?" He offers as another suggestion, something made of fire would certainly be capable of doing all of this, the thought has him scratching his jaw curiously.

"Weak wine?" There's a brief moment when Skyler looks as if he's giving the thought deep consideration... He nibbles his upper lip, eyes going unfocused before he shakes his head as if in pain. No thoughts, just vibes. "We'll see. I mean, I don't want to shit myself and have it freeze in my good pants." Ew. "But maybe if whoever's on their way doesn't bring tea with them."

He grimaces at Jarik's talk of hot baths. "Gods of my mother. A hot bath *and* tea. With those little cookies I found at that gnomish bakery." He shakes his head ruefully, and shoots Reithak an apologetic look. "Sorry. Focusing." He purses his lips, and lets the great thinkers of the adventuring party do their thing. He's already starting to get overheated from all the attempts at thought.

The group are able to deviate from the path and begin picking their way through the sparse woodland at the edge of the forest, following a circuitous path towards where this mobile plume of smoke seems to be headed. They find themselves in a sparsely wooded area- again, there is obstensibly a trail underfoot but this part of the countryside doesn't seem to have had any footfalls in quite some time, so the path and the brush are as one and both covered in a good layer of crunchy white snow to boot.

Harshad slides his rapier out of its sheath as he picks his way among the sparse brush, reaching up to push his hood back so he can see better. His eyes flick back and forth, and he hms as they reach the alleged trail. "Doesn't look like anyone's been here..."

Then the rogue pauses, tilting his head and holding up a hand. "Hey, anyone hear hooves? Sounds like someone's riding hard -- hope they're heading -away- from the fire, and not into it."

Bryn looks from the smoke, or path of it, to Jarik and Skyler. "Ey, don't get too distracted." A tusky grin follows. "Celebratin comes after. Can get all the whiskey 'n tea 'n whatever, then. 'N I'll dunk ye inna baths m'self." Could be stick, could be carrot.

Then she looks back ahead of their path. Her head cants. "Ye. Hearin hoofs. N whip crackin. Maybe is a burning cart?" Then she takes a large sniff and her broad nose wrinkles. "Ain jus wood burning I smell, though. Sulfur. 'N blood." With that last word, she draws her big curveblade from her back. Where there's blood, there's bleeding. Where there's bleeding, there could be fighting.

Reithak squints some more, clacking their beak together. "Well, either that sound of hooves and whips is unrelated to the moving plume of smoke, Or it's from whatever's causing this." The egalrin notes. "Ah, shit. Y'smell sulfur? That's bad news, I don't think that was anyone here passing wind. Wouldn't be surprised if something from the lower planes is there, which means, we gotta deal with it."

As far as Skyler is concerned, they're lost in the woods. The former pirate seems oblivious to his surroundings as thoughts of hot baths and oruch attendants to wash his feet and massage his scalp swim through the empty space between the knitted ear-flaps. Fortunately, even if he is well and truly out of his depth he utterly trusts the people around him, and happily follows their lead.

Besides, everyone knows the view is better from the back. Waka waka waka.

When Bryn draws her blade, he follows suit, easily and gracefully sliding the scimitar out of the back sheath and taking an alert position. "If it bleeds, we can kill it." He assures Reithak, before pausing and scratching his jaw. "Unless we're not smell it's blood. His blood? Her blood?" He squints, "Do lower planar entities have the concept of gender? I don't want to assume gender... That's rude. *Their* blood."

Crik's notebook is in one hand, but his hand crossbow falls onto his other hand. "I knew I didn't misread the job posting." The corvid croons slash croaks, apparently giddy with excitement. He continues to stare for a moment, before he turns to look at the others. "... how do you know it is a planar entity?" He asks with a blank look. Which, to be fair, for him was fairly neutral expression.

"Whips." Jarik says with a nod, echoed by a small hoot from inside his hood. He does blink a few times at the mention of sulfur, then he turns his nose to the ski and tries to sniff at the cold air to find it for himself. Lower planes is out of the realm of his experience. So are elementals, those just seem more friendly on the surface.

As others ready for battle so does he, shifting his hand in his cloak to slip in into the attack claws that hang from his belt.

Soon enough, all of them can hear the hoofbeats. Whatever it is, it's getting closer. There's also the sound of brush and low branches bending and twisting and breaking. The smoke draws nearer, glimpses of flickering red and orange flames can be seen through the woods. Eventually, the sounds of harried cattle begin to carry too- labored, panting breaths of beasts of burden driven to exhaustion and beyond. And then the first of them bursts out of the brush to the north- brush which blackens and chars in its presence.

The beasts eyes are wild, panic and fury. Its black iron horns are rust red with dried blood, and its brand burns still. Black skin and fur is cracked and shot through with rivulets of abyssal fire emerging from sundered flesh. And it is not alone. More of the beasts come barrelling out of the woods, driven in blind, animal panic. Some of them are impaled on broken branches that have charred and blackened into stakes, and they would be dead if not for their otherworldly endurance. And still they run, driven by some overwhelming urge to stampede.

"See? Planar!" Skyler calls out, before letting out a bone-chilling war cry and rushing forward towards the Fiendish aurochs. Despite his bold decision to charge at raging fiery bulls of evil, he pauses and takes a defensive stance, preparing himself to take the charge should they make it to him. He mutters, "Caltrops. I should have bought *caltrops* instead of a new knit hat."

The Aurochs blow black smoke from their nostrils as they huff and stamp their feet upon seeing the party, before breaking into a full run towards the group. Their steel hooves melt the snow and blacken the grass beneath as they barrel towards the party.

"They look stampedin! Don' get in the way if ye can. They run ye down! N they gots the hells in 'em! Fire 'n chill don' bother 'em much." Bryn warns as she moves on up, though encouragement follows; starting with an assuring pat on Jarik as she passes. Then comes a rousing cry that is belted in time with the hoofbeats. "But we stop 'em! Ain' nothin but steaks waitin fer cookin!" Sure, they might be able to calm them down, too, but... steaks're better.

Crik's beak opens and suddenly, everyone can hear the sudden flurry of notebooks being messed about, pages fluttering and then finally, the corvid holds up a tiny red, and pretty singed looking, notebook. "Auroch-" He begins, before Bryn fills in the details.

A moment later, Crik is running along, continuing to shout out with his deep, and currently croaking, voice. "-have resistance to cold and fire, have been known to be resistant to arcana. Known to smite those with pure in their heart and extremely dangerous when in a stampede!"

The egalrin stops and then looks at a spot in the ground in front of him for a moment. Then his cloaks flutter and _amazing_ collection of random metal bits and pieces just floods the snow in front of him. He looks up. Then down. Then back up. "They have been corrupted by something in the Abyss." He lets out a long 'crick'. "Horns are made out of black iron." He looks back down at his notes. "... black iron...?"

Jarik opens his mouth, about to tell Sky not to go charging in just as he... goes charging in. For a moment his mouth just twists in fond annoyance, at least until a hearty slap on the back almost sends him stumbling as Bryn passes. Right. He moves off to the side himself, free hand twisting through some quick gestures as he murmurs words into the snowy air. After a moment the snow seems to be sliding off of an invisible barrier just above his clothing.

Harshad vaguely remembers hearing a song about this. Something about 'trying to catch the Tyrant's herd, across the endless sky'. He shakes his head, and instead glides forward, boots crunching in the snow. His blades up, he growls, "Be ready. I don't think they're going to want to return to the pastures any time soon!"

He glances around, seeing Jarik to one side and Bryn to the right, and the side of his mouth curls up faintly. "If we can get on their sides maybe we can take them out quickly, before they really get after us."

Skyler is a sky pirate, not a cowboy, but apparently the two have a certain amount of overlap between the skill sets because as the fiendish Auroch comes charging at him, he takes a moment, adjusts the grip of his sword, and then does a running leap that lands him on the back of one of the fiery steers. He frantically grabs at the horns, letting out a whoop of pure joy. "Jarik! JARIK! Do you see me!? I'm RIDING THE FIENDISH BULL!"

The Aurochs Skyler manages to mount is NOT happy about it. It stamps its hooves and issues a complaint of black smoke from its nostrils, rearing up and kicking out its hindlegs to try and dislodge the man. It tries to lower its head for a charge, but Skyler's grip on its horns yanks it this way and that, frustrating the creature and its efforts to barrel down on Bryn.

Bryn blinks when Skyler continues to run forward and... leaps atop the lead bull. Then she hoots! "Ha! Ride 'em, Sky guy!" This leads right into her chanting of "Hoof beats. Waitin defeats. Soon meats." The last word drops several octaves, causing flesh and guts to vibrate uncomfortably. Just not quite enough to bother the stampeding fiendish aurochs.

When Skyler tries to steer the steer, her pitch leaps back up to her more normal contralto with "Grab it by the horns! Ye got it!"

Given the frantic bucking of the Aurochs leading the charge, one of the others breaks away from the group lest it gets kicked, and sets its eyes on a certain Elgarin on the outskirts of the group. It scrapes the ground, lowers its head, and then barrels towards Crik. Steely hooves trample the Caltrops without giving the creature pause, but its horn snags in the snow and wrenches its head before it manages to gut the Corvid chronicler.

With a rather large, flaming cow in front of them, what was the best course of action? stabbing the giant beast in front of them, it seemed. The egalrin strides forward and lunges, managing to land a decent strike! Though, it was an awfully large beast, and it could likely take quite a few blows such as this.

After the glittering of caltrops hits the pure white snow, Crik sees the creature rush towards him. With widening eyes, he realizes the collection of bottle caps, bolts, sharp nails and marbles has all gone to waste and he was about to be skewered. In panic, he lets out a loud, bonechilling 'caw' and flutters his wings.

Still, he feels the slice of the horn into his gut, skewering most of his insides and leaving black feathers and crimson ddrops into the snow- hold on a second. Crik realizes he was holding a knife and still very much intact, and thanks to Reithak, the horned fiend was exposed.

With a momentary blank expression, he then raises his big flat bladed knife and puts down the beast with a quiet, but very deadly, stab.

The remaining Aurochs barrel into action, plowing their way through the snow and overrunning Bryn, Harshad and Jarrick in a crush of hooves that bruise the flesh and crack the bones. Bryn is quick enough to avoid the worst of it, but the others are not so lucky- Harshad takes a hefty kick that sends him momentarily sprawling, and one of them stomps right on the center of Jarik's chest with a sickening crack. It is suddenly very difficult, and painful, for the Oruch witch to breathe.

Jarik likes to point out he grew up around farm animals and in the woods around wildlife, but none of them were possessed by the hells. So when one manages to catch him squarely in the chest he stumbles, wheezing, a bit of blood already dribbling from his mouth. He takes a pained step away from the auroch, almost reflexively muttering a quick prayer to Gilead as a soft glow surrounds his hand, a hand that he quickly presses against his crushed chest, his breathing easing suddenly with a gasping intake of air.

"Jarik!" The sky-pirate's eyes widen as he watches his friend get gored by the fiendish Aurochs, and his expression hardens, jawline clenching. When his improvised mount rears up to attempt to gore him, Skyler doesn't even flinch. Instead, the horn he's grasped in an attempt to stead himself becomes a pivot as he uses the momentum to launch himself over the head, scimitar catching the creatures throat to direct his fall as he lets go, landing in a single tumble.

And as he surfaces, he again lashes out with his blade, swiping at the Auroch in front of him across the flanks. It's a wicked blow, and he flicks the blade to the side so that scarlet red splatters onto the snow to right while the steam from the blood of the split-throat carcass behind him rises to frame him as he stares towards the creatures threatening his friends with *hard* eyes.

Bryn is able to duck aside the charging Auroch with little more than a flesh wound. When she turns to see the path they took behind her, though, she sees that the blood is spilled. Given that it is Harshad and Jarik, it is oruch blood. Her clan or not (and her clan isn't even here), this is unacceptable.

Her song turns more guttural as it falls into a mix of yrch and trade... and no small amount of growling. "They are meat! Blood. Blood for blood! War for Kor!" With that, she rushes back towards the halfsies, barreling down with her long curveblade held high. Until it is brought down in an overhead chop into one of the aurochs harrying the two.

The buck that just threw Skyler rears back, and splatters the snow with blood from the wounds left in its flesh. But it doesn't flee, as a wild animal might. The panic in its eyes is blotted out with rage as it bears down on Skyler. It plunges one of its horns deep into the sky pirate's gut just as he's celebrating his feat of acrobatic prowess and deadly grace and then launches him into the air. Skyler collapses into the snow, pale and fading, with red staining the white in a rapidly growing circle around his limp form.

There was a lot of happening around Crik, whom was perhaps a bit too busy chronicling the occurances - but then Reithak's call wakes him up from his stupor. He holds onto his knife and looks around, beak open. What to do? Then the corvid gets an unnatural thought, one that makes him shudder instantly. With a sudden caw, he springs forth into action - knife held up in the air, he shanks the wounded auroch, but doesn't quite manage to finish it.

The chunk taken out of its haunch by Bryn definitely grabs the attention of the Aurochs, and it stomps its feet and spins around to slam one of its blood-rusted horns into her, catching her in the shoulder and tearing a gouge out of it. Not as grevious as the wound dealt to her comrade, but certainly painful.

Seeing Sky go down has Jarik growling under his breath. There's no way he can get to him now, but at least the others seems to be going to tend to him. Still, the half-oruch has his temper up now. He pulls his hide cloak tighter around him, Greywing taking off and up into the snowy sky. The hide seems to merge with him, his form swelling into that of a large and very cross looking boar that sends snow spraying up around him as he drops to four hooves. He closes in on the aurochs, a menacing glint in his dark eyes.

Harshad is battered by horn and hoof, and his cloak is torn to reveal gleaming silvery mail beneath. Seems the half-orc isn't relying -solely- on his agility to prevent injury, though he'll have some spectacular contusions later. He snarls, spitting on the snow, and as Jarik wildshapes into a boar and surges toward one of the aurochs... Harshad moves.

Swift, his rapier whistles as it drives into the fiendish bovine's eye, piercing its brain and sending it to the snow with a crash. His kerambit whistles as he spins, laying open a long gash on the other auroch, as he snarls, "Come on, you sons of bitches! I'll give you a dinner date with the gods!"

On the ground, Skyler's left toe twitches. But, alas, he remains unconscious and bleeding.

The Aurochs feels the sting of Harshad's dagger in its flank and spins around, dropping its head low and slamming its horns into the man with such force it drives the wind out of him and lifts him off his feet. Something gives in his ribcage, but it's not enough to knock him down. These Aurochs hit like... well, an aurochs- which is to be expected.

Bryn is gored, and this time its more than a flesh wound. By apperances, that is; she doesn't seem to let it slow her down. She ain't got time to bleed. Their enemies, on the other hand...

"Blood 'n gore! Gore galore! For Kor! For War!" She brings her cow-chopper down again on the auroch, this time finishing the cuts and it. With a growl, she steps over its still-bleeding carcass to stand by Harshad against the last one there.

The fiendish Aurochs had looked poised to finish Sky off, hoof poised above his head and ready to stomp when Reithak comes rushing in and lands a telling blow on the beast. It turns, and with a shake of its head slams its horn into the Inquisitor's flank, puncturing armor and flesh alike and drawing fresh blood to further stain the gore soaked snow.

Reithak squawks in pain as they're gored by one of the remaining aurochs, looking significantly more bloody than before. No time to dwell on it however, as the larger egalrin hops to one side, placing one hand on their fallen ally. "Hey, that was real cool even if they are dirt, right? You can't let someone so inspired fall like this." she prays, infusing the fallen one with healing magic, closing up some of the worst wounds.

Crik, still uninjured, takes the opportunity to finish off the auroch so Reithak can focus on the more important task at hand. "... I will help the others." He tells her, after giving the corpse a brief nudge with his foot - and just like that, he flutters away. Though - "That was an interesting prayer!" He calls out, whilst running.

Jarik may have not have been the most useful during this fight, having had to tend to his own wounds, but at least he ends it on a high note. With an angry squeeling grunt the big boar that was a half-oruch slams into the last remaining demonic auroch, sinking tusks into it's side. Then with a wrench of his head, tearing a gash open. One glare is spared for the fallen beast, before he goes trotting off in the direction of Skyler.

And so the last of the Fiendish beasts is slain, collapsing into the snow like its kin. What had once been a pristine field of white is now a churned mess of mud, blood and gore and the party have taken their licks but emerged victorious. They have barely the time to catch their breath, though, before a loud crack rings out across the field of battle.

A stranger on horseback emerges from the brush to the north, and tilts up the hat on his head with the still-smoking barrel of his dragonspitter.

"Now look at what you've done." he says, as he emerges more fully from the shadows. What at first appeared to be a man, is now clearly anything but. The skin of his head is deep red, leathery, and stretched taut and fleshless over his skull. He lacks lips, so yellowed teeth are on clear display. Where should be a nose is a ragged hole in his face, and instead of eyes he has two burning orbs of abyssal fire. "I ought to gun y'all down where you stand." he continues, chewing and then spitting a wad of foetid gunk into the snow. "But I can see you took a lickin' an' I'm a sporting type. So how about y'all scurry off and lick your wounds, and we'll settle this at high noon on the morrow." he suggests then, tugging at the stirrupts to halt his horse- whos oily black hair is stretched like a drum over skeletal frame, and whos hooves burn the ground beneath it. "An ifn' you don't show? Well..." he says, looking around. "There's a fine little homestead not a days ride from here. May just pay 'em a visit. How's that sound?" he asks the party.

Crik has left.

As the healing energy hits him, Skyler bolts to a standing position, grabbing his belly. "But mommy I don't want to eat that!" He says groggily, blinking at Reithak, "The chicken is still on the bone."

Blink blink. And the swashbuckling ex-pirate coughs, turns to the side, vomits, and then blinks again at the sudden apparition. "Do they have tea at the homestead? I have a weird taste in my mouth. It tastes like.. fuck you."

And despite his injuries, the redhead attempts to get to his feet.

Harshad stares at the fiendish-looking rider. Undead or fiend, at any rate. Then, he glances at Bryn and Jarik, as if considering a response in front of them. He winces, touching his ribs, before giving the horrid cattle-wrangler a glare.

"Alright. What do you want us to put on your tombstone?" The kerambit spins in Harshad's fist, before vanishing back into its sheath. "Wouldn't want you to go unremembered."

Bryn is already reaching for Harshad (since he's closest) to see about licking some of those wounds (not literally). Then there's the ... person on the ... horse. A challenge? A threat? Like she can say no to either. "Gonna send ye back ta whatever demon's arse ye crawled outta! And the horse ye rode in on!"

The boar form simply seems to part back into a cloak, like it was all an elaborate costume as Jarik once more stands on his own two feet. He just glowers at the abyssal rider, speaking no words but obviously keen on maybe digging some tusks into him as well.

Reithak stopped, stuck one hand one her side, laughing loudly. "Everything alright over there we you folks?" She asks, only before her attention was sent to the voice. Any laughter was gone. "Well, shit. Guess we can't turn that down now, can we?" She snorts. "No way I'm letting anyone else get hurt."

"Hah! Bravado. Gotta respect it." The rider says, and spits again, "But I aint about to kick a dog when its down. High noon, tomorrow." he says again, and then digs jagged spurs into the already bleeding flanks of his nightmarish steed and tugh hard on the reigns. The horse rears and whinneys, issuing forth a cloud of choking black smoke, then turns and the two of them head back into the woods from which they came.

The Tornmawr river banks, early afternoon.

While the remains of the festivities had died down, the work done in the area remained at least. Fire pits that were mostly snowed over, and the log cabin nearby which seemed to be slowly losing the snow cap which had formed on it.

The reason for it was obvious, at a further glance, as the small makari outside nearly blended into the snow, save for the movements of an axe being brought repeatedly down, breaking down the firewood into manageable sizes to keep the stove inside running, stopping to toss more in a few times.

Bryn has arrived.

A fiery spirited Dragoon has found the best excuse to go out into the cold snow, and the relentless winter. It was soon to be a routine for him. Surely there would be a party like the one before.

"Spelldancer!" Aelwyn calls out, the ruddy sith-makar pulling the cloak around him more tightly. His head was covered in flakes of snow, and his red ribbons were miserable. "... whyfor is one chopping down the wood?" He asks, with a tilt of his head.

The small winged makari stopped their work for a moment, pausing and waving to the dragoon, resting the axe on one shoulder. Eztli on the other hand, looked completely unbothered by the weather in any way, shape or form.

"Afternoon, oh great and powerful headless horseman!" They chuckle. "What does it look like? I'm getting all this ready so I don't need to worry about it later, of course. And what about you?"

Not everyone minds the cold so much. Bryn could be one of those. She has a few extra wrappings on her arms and legs, but otherwise isn't bundled up at all against the chill or the snow. She remembers hearing about the sauna being set up on the Tornmawr and has come to check it out. She just may not have remembered the day quite right.

"Ey!" she calls out seeing others ouside the cabin, lifting shiny arm and hand to wave at the Makari while on her way cabinwards.

Aelwyn makes a grandiouse spin, then extends his hand towards Eztli. "And the leader of riotous dance." He flickers his tongue out. "This one believes the dance were a great success." He then straightens and looks at the sky. "... except for fighting off the winter." He lets out a deep breath.

The appearance of Bryn makes Aelwyn turn his head. "Braid! This one sees one has chosen!" The draconian greets with wide teth. "Does it shoot lava?"

"Oh please, Aelwyn, it was never about fighting off the winter. It was about celebrating what we have before winter comes, after all." The white and brown makari chuckles. Eztli had on just a plain breechcloth while returning to preparing the firewood after giving Aelwyn a strong handshake. "Ah, hello, Bryn, right? Nice to see you again! You're welcome to join, same as Aelwyn, it's open to everyone. Just actually getting it up to temperature, is all."

Bryn looses a loud laugh at Aelwyn's question about the arm, but takes a moment to give Eztli a direct wave before she lowers it. " Yep, that's me!" Then she answers the other question. "Nah. No shootin, lava nor nothin else. Works pretty good fer the normal stuff, though. Still gettin used ta it."

Aelwyn twists his lips. "No, this one did not ride headless only to say goodbyes." The Dragoon responds, crossing his arm across his chest. Then his face grows long. "... it is not hot enough?" The draconian makes an exaggerated sigh. "Whyfor does this town be filled with mages, if the one place they do not cast their fireballs in?" He pauses, then looks towards Eztli. "Present company excluded."

The draconian's attention is then returned upon Bryn. "Ah, tch, shame. Perhaps one could ask Brass to make modifications, her hand can be quite impressive." He clicks his tongue. "Still can swing a blade and wrestle with it?"

"... I want the air to be hot and steamy in there, Aelwyn, not completely absent from being consumed by fire, along with the building around said air." Eztli snorts loudly. "Besides, other people are going to want to use it, and I need to keep it stocked long enough that it'll still be perfect when I get back from enjoying a swim through the river. You're welcome to join me by the way, the water is absolutely wonderful this time of year!"

The small makari stops to toss some water on top of the stove, but seems disappointed by how quickly it steams. "No, not quite. Hand looks good though, did you not want it back, though? I know people that could manage that."

Bryn nods to Aelwyn, grinning tuskily. "First thing I did was start swinging ma big blade round again!" A pause. "Er, second thing. First was havin an' ale in each hand. Missed that, too. Ain' done much wrasslin 'gain yet, but that's onna list!"

To Eztli, she rolls her shoulders in a shrug. "Eh. If'n Kor wanted me ta have the hand, he'da left it on. Since I was gettin a new one, might as well get a better one, eh?"

Aelwyn looks at Eztli. "But is it not the point to be hot and sweaty inside?" He asks, gesturing towards the hut. "Why not simply have a large fire?" It was obvious that the draconian was more interested in the heat, rather than the subtleties of the steamy, stinging heat. "Tch, perhaps this one should hire someone to heat it in well advance."

The suggestion for joining the river swim simply makes the ruddy sith-makar pull up the cloak further over himself.

"It is good to hear Braid has appropriate priorities." The draconian flickers his tongue. "Planning to join in the steam?"

"That's a lot of ale, but I guess it's more sensible than a custom made double sized mug." The small makari snorts. "I suppose I can't argue with that, well, no real good reason to."

"The large fire is wasteful, Aelwyn, besides, doesn't feel as good." Eztli chuckles some more. "What though, are you not a fan of the snow?" She asks, one brow raised. "You just like tossing other people into the snow, is it?"

The sorceress glances once more into the cabin, sighs, and snaps her fingers, causing a small bolt of flame to fling itself at the stones, making them glow a slight orange for the briefest of moments. "There, it's pre heated since he's so impatient."

"Sure!" No one needed to ask Bryn twice if she was joining. Not that anyone did. "Always up fer gettin hot 'n sweaty! Cleans everythin out! Then ye just jump inna water to wash't way!"

There's a pause as she blinks at the snap and flame before she's back to grinning. A large metal thumb is jabbed in Eztli's direction. "Looks like ye don' needa hire nobody. Got someone right there!"

Aelwyn breathes out a sigh of relief. His toes were already starting to go numb. They probably were already numb. The Dragoon turns his head towards Bryn. "This was has never been sure if he can afford her." The draconian quietly admits to the tall woman. "And this one is afraid to ask."

After which he flashes his teeth, coming nearer the stones. AFter a moment of consideration, he takes a handful of water and throws it onto the stones. "Hot enough?" He asks from Eztli, then looks between the two. "And whyfor anyone would swim in a frozen river who is not Silver?" He shakes his head. "Try not to swim under the ice, at the very least!"

Eztli glances to Bryn, and shakes her head. "No, he couldn't afford me in the slightest. Mostly because I'm not for sale, at least." The makari chuckles. Finally, things were ready, and Eztli could sit back and relax on one of the benches with a happy sigh. "The steam is the most important part Aelwyn. Especially since I can't really feel the heat to begin with."

"Why not enjoy the frozen river Aelwyn? I thought you were an excellent skater last time, when you actually got used to it." she chuckles some more. "Bryn's got the right of it, enjoy the sauna, and then the river is even more nice when you hop in right after! I'd be fine anyways, I can hold my breath long enough under the ice."

Bryn looks between the two of them and lets out another laugh. "Time fer some heat!" She happily makes her way in to plop herself down on a bench. Off come to fur wraps on her arms and legs, her boots, and most of what she's wearing.

Aelwyn looks towards Eztli - then puts his hand on her shoulder. "This one laments her loss." He bows his head. "For the touch of fire is the strongest sensation one can feel." The cloak is discarded, revealing he was already wearing just his red loincloth. The glaive is brought along as he also finds a bench to seat down, letting out a long exhale. Toes curled.

The ruddy sith-makar tilts his head and then raises his hand. "The one with the blades? Ah, that was like dancing on a high rope. This one is not very good at it, but Jared taught this one." He lets out a brief grin. "But while Spelldancer perhaps could hold her breath, this one worries for Braid."

"It's alright, I don't mind that much really, It's not like it's completely gone, just, no overheating or burns." The small makari shrugs. "Yes, with the blades on your feet. I guess that makes sense Aelwyn, but you really should go out and do it more. And go enjoy everything the cold has to offer."

"Yeah, Bryn might have more trouble, but it's not like there aren't areas to swim still that are safe. There's only so many excuses for not going in you know, Aelwyn."

GAME: Carver accepts a meet and will arrive momentarily.

Carver has arrived.

"Ahh.." Bryn gets comfortable, which includes kicked her feet up and wiggling freed toes. "Huh?" Then she catches up on the swimming part. "Eh, can swim jus' fine. This'd be more just dippin 'n rinsin, though. Not gonna start swimmin under ice. Ain' that dumb."

Aelwyn's horns rest upon the side of the hut. There was that subtle flexing, shifting and stretching of his ruddy body - mostly for show, but also to get some of that frost off his scales. "Ahh, this one can enjoy the blades, but the river?" The draconian makes a shiver. "This one would rather walk on hot coals. It is better for the feet." Another flexing of the toes.

The Dragoon looks towards Bryn. "It is a river; this one is not sure if one can punch through the ice like Silver can." The sith-makar says... tauntingly.

The door swings open, Carver squinting against the wave of steam. She waves her hand before her face before blindly stepping inside. Certainly she can make out the silhouettes of others actively enjoying the cabin's benefits, but not identify them yet.

"Aw, but taking a swim is the best part, gets your heart rate up, and it's so refreshing!" The small makari laughs, lounging on the bench. "But yeah, best not to be dumb about it, safety's more important."

"Besides, hot coals wouldn't do much at this point. I can still feel the cold a lot better, you know." She adds, turning to the door as someone else enters. "Hey! You're welcome to join us if you want. Plenty of room in here after all."

Aelwyn makes a face. "If this one wants his heart rate up, there are plenty of more enjoyable ways of doing it." He flickers his tongue, but then after a moment he sighs and stretches out. "This one must deliver something," He says with great annoyance, "But with this heat this one surely will be able to run and return before the frost settles in." He flashes his teeth, and then moves past the stranger in the mist outside.

Carver moves out of one way, and then closer to a familiar voice, sitting down on a bench as well. "Sounds like I was jus' late for the party, eh?" Sweat already stands out against dark skin. It's a steam room after all!

Aelwyn has left.

"What, already? Must be real important to go against your hatred of the cold, Aelwyn." Eztli chuckles loudly. "Don't worry, I'll keep it well stocked, assuming I don't head off to enjoy the river for too long."

The small makaro blinks, and rumbles happily, smiling wide to the newcomer. "Well, apparently. I wasn't expecting everyone to just up and take off." She chuckles, a bit more ruefully.

Carver nods, "I suppose this must feel a 'little' closer to home than the snow an' ice." She clasps hands together, bracing arms against her knees as she leans forward slightly. "Hear about the attack near the trade district?"

"This? I suppose it does, we had plenty of saunas where I'm from." Eztli sighs, placing one hand on Carver's knee. "I'm not from Am'shere you know, but, eh? What's that about an attack on the trades?" She asks, one brow raised in concern. "Is everyone alright?"

"I remember, but you also was very excited fo' the steam room." Carver says with a chuckle. "Oh, you dinnit 'ear? Mmm, well, all the toys came to life an' this one in particular, the leader I'm guessin', he showed his face. Was some reborn devil or sometin'? Went by Eclavdran. Seemed like some of the big storied adventurers knew him. I didn't recognize the name."

"Everyone's fine, I think. Some minor injuries to merchants and they destroyed a fountain bot got contained pretty quickly." Carver answers.

"Eclavdran, name rings a bell, but, I don't know them personally." Eztli sighs, tapping one horn deep in thought. "Know they're bad news, though. Probably related to that one in the market the other day? Glad people are alright, though."

"I was real excited, shame I couldn't make it the day of." She nods. "At least I can enjoy it today with you, though."

"Yeah, it's nice." Carver says, patting the hand on her knee. "An' as far as I can tell? He was. Seemed to spook some of the people there wot knew 'em, and even as a doll, he was able to transform into somethin'... well, vaguely devilish? My arrows dinnit seem to do much to 'em."

"Not surprised, to be honest." Eztli muses, shaking her head slightly. "From what I heard, he could have destroyed the city, probably more than that. hurt a lot of people, but hard to learn more since people don't even like saying his name."

"So, there's more to those dolls than it seems, at least some of them." Eztli continues, letting out a long sigh. "Hope none of mine hurt anyone, I'd feel guilty just by association."

"Well, statistically..." Carver teases, before squeezing the hand. "I'm sure they didn't. Most of the toys seemed harmless. 'member? Like that one prancy elf who just sorta faked castin' a spell. As cute as a little plushie dragon shifting doll of you would be, I suspect it'd be much the same."

"Yeah, I guess there aren't that many of me, after all." Eztli nods, squeezing the hand back. "Also, tiny."

"Telamon, yeah. glad he wasn't actually casting spells, that'd be a lot of trouble."

"I would be real cute though, wouldn't I?' Eztli teases back. "Almost as cute as you'd be."

"Yours 'is' real sweet. I foun' one and bought it." Carver says with a wrinkled nose. "An' stop it. I'd hate seein' me in that way, nor am I near enough decorated for it. If you fin' one of my horse someday though, buy't for me." She runs her free hand through her hair, already damp. "... s'really hot in here."

"Really there was one of me?" Eztli asks, surprised. "I mean, I should expect that, think I saw myself in one of those books."

"Still, that's really cool, and, noted, Carver. I'll be happy with the real deal." She hums, patting the hand she was holding. "Is it? hard to tell nowadays. I hope I didn't stoke the stove too much."

"s'fine." Carver says, with a wry shake of her head. "Though think it's time for that dip in the ice, that Jotun spoke of. Cya out there? An' there most certainly was a few. I'll show you later."

A peaceful countryside road's serenity is broken by a scream, echoed by a few more. A small family of Lucht, riding many astride a comfortable wagon with colorful pitches point in terror behind them as their ponies frantically try to pull them to safety. It does not take long to realize what has driven the driver to snap his reins for urgency.

A great, spindly creature with arms so long that even with its loping run the claws drag through the dirt. Its appetite for flesh so succulent has drool winding down its tapered jaw, mouth agape and ridged with terrible broken teeth. Even now two arrows fired from crossbows from the Lucht are snapped off as wounds close, no pain or fear apparent. Only the taste for the hunt.

The troll's keening cry is a death knoll for many who travel through these highlands.

It had been a rather pleasant day, so far. Schara was just returning from one of the outlying townships around Alexandria, leaving enough time however to return before nightfall, in case of dangerous creatures out on the hunt.

What she was not expecting, or at least expecting much less, was for dangerous creatures to be out hunting already. The artificer is struck a bit confused down by the side of the road as she tries to make herself as small as possible with the wagon tearing down the road.

The momentary freeze was eventually broken by seeing what was coming. Even if they could escape, there was no guarantee that carriage would be able to outpace it, so she quickly dropped the pack she had been carrying, readying their arms, armor, armor arms and arms on arms for combat.

A second keening hunter's cry joins the first. Another troll barrels down from the hill on an intercept course, a young Lucht with pink hair pointing out yet another threat, begging their straining horses for more speed; more urgency. Anything to get them to safety. They rumble past Schara and despite their own danger, they call out a warning. Run!

A third cry, but different. It's more like an owl hooting, as from a nearby pond, someone astride a crimson horse races toward what is clearly becoming a flashpoint of blood and violence.

Carver's hair streams behind her, face covered in wild war paint. Astride Deathless she races into the fight, the Red Aldui's horseshoes glowing enchanted crimson as they cover ground at incredible speed. Avoiding the intercepting troll, she falls into pursuit behind the larger of the pair, arrows thunking into its thick hide with meaty splashes of blood.

If the troll is concerned by this, it isn't apparent, but it does stop its pursuit and roars at her in challenge. MORE MEAT!

The wagon bumps and rumbles pass the melee, the straw-hat wearing driver giving the heroic Schara a panicked glance. "Stay alive, we'll find help!" They sound sincere despite their fear, the ponies working in tandem to keep themselves out of the troll's rending claws. Where they could find help? That isn't quite as clear but mayhaps a passing patrol is nearby!

Against her better judgement, or perhaps from recalling a treatise she had read on troll regeneration in fields of medical science, Schara had decided to jump into action. "Get away from here, as quick as you can! I think I might be able to scare them off!" She shouted to the passerbies. It wasn't a particularly certain notion, but at the very least, one uncertain death was better than numerous near guaranteed.

The coils on their left arm, unfolded into a strange contraption of artifice, roared to life quite literally, as there was an explosion of flames from the weapon that engulfed much of the arm, and more of the troll chasing the carriage, burning it badly before it dissipated.

The troll's foul breath washes over Schara. The first, whose ugly mug shows unhealed acid wound splashed across its missing left eye, swipes at her with nails scratching shrilly off her armor. She feels first the flash of pain as a nail breaks off into a gap. The second troll is more successful, and even as fire begins to burn out across its great chest, they rake and rend and take a chunk of flesh from her shoulder. The teachers did not go into great detail about troll culture but they way their eyes gleam with excitement shows the whole truth. Elf flesh! Tasty treat for empty stomachs!

Carver digs her heels into Deathless's side, kicking them into advance to aid her unknown ally. More arrows punch and puncture, the first pair planting through the exposed side of Hungy's throat, the beast toppling over. Is it dead?

Angy growls as another barbed instrument plants into its thigh but does not break its stare with Schara. No fear. Even the fire only caused a brief hesitation.

"Shoot the downed one with fire! Now!" Carver yells at Schara, as the woman goes to get some distance. She can see blood flowing freely from the injured artificer, even as a familiar enchantment sends her limbic system into overdrive. Angy, arrow breaking off in its thigh as its regenerative physiology kicks in, swipes and claws but a rearing Deathless gives them just enough space to avoid the rending blows.

Schara watches, perhaps with horror, as Hungy's wounds begin to seal close and it rises on unsteady feet and begins to look around for more meat to taste.

Schara was not however expecting the second troll out from the side. Their armor was more made to ensure that they wouldn't be crippled by the weight, not as much for actual protection from claws and bludgeoning. At least the armor made them look less rough than they were as they tried to make some distance. Pulling a small bronze device out of a pouch, they flip one switch that causes it to emit a sharp jolt of lightning that jumps from the artificer to the hunter and her horse, which had the odd but familiar effect of speeding them up.

Carver unleashes another flurry of arrows, a veritably volley that stumbles the troll back a foot. Deathless flails their crimson hooves, but though they batter the troll, they do not seem to do any actual damage through its thick hide.

Angy leans in and BITES deep into Deathless, near the saddle. The pained whinny seems to drive Carver into a fury, her young face twisted into a mask of hate from her rage and warpaint. The troll pulls back, swallowing and wallowing with the taste of meat and blood.

With some modicum of space and slightly less threat of immediately being torn to shreds, the artificer is able to take aim at the fallen troll, coils in the arm heating red hot again, with another, less intense gout of flame that engulfs the Troll, but it does not go out like last time, instead leaving the beast a burning Pyre on the ground for some time.

Hungy's screams are no longer of the thrill of the hunt, but of raw terror. Fire consumes it, despite its flailing, burning bright in death; trolls do not have many predators but the heat of the artificer's coiled weapon might be one of them.

Carver should swap to her sidearm, but chooses not to. Instead, she feels the troll's claw as it rakes across her lead arm but does not yelp in the pain. Instead, she plants three arrows into the creature's face. As it falls, Deathless too begins to stomp upon its corpse. She dismounts already reaching for spark and tinder... but looks to Schara, and nods. Why bother? This woman has a fire cannon.

Schara moves to burn the other Troll as it falls, preparing to fire on it. But perhaps having a chunk of their shoulder missing caused problems, or perhaps it was just a reflex from the pain, but their arm jerked suddenly, and instead of burning the remaining Troll, a poor tree that was in the way past it catches alight. Thankfully the ground was damp from the nearby pond.

Angy's eyes suddenly pop open and its open maw lunges at Carver, who was standing above it. The ranger only dodges thanks to the increased reflex speed that Schara's spell granted her, stumbling back with a curse and reaching for her hatchet as the troll readies itself to attempt again.

Deathless bites the troll's arm, and the giantkin simply yanks it free, skin ripping off and healing just as quickly. Carver uses the distraction to slip to the side and draw her axe, but the hatchet simply does not have the power of her bow and only scars the thick hide and nothing more. "Shoot it again!"

There's a yelp of pain from the Artificer as they unceremoniously perform some percussive maitenance on their shoulderblade with their closed fist. But it seemed to have the desired effect, and their next shot hits true, setting the remaining troll ablaze.

Carver takes a calming breath when the troll falls over, burning quickly. It does not rise. She walks toward Schara, and nods, "I have some heal--" The rumble of a returning wagon distracts her, the Lucht returning over the hill. They have lit torches and reloaded crossbows, ready to help their saviors... but no longer needed. The straw-hat guide calls forward, "We have a cleric! Do you need healing?"

The ranger quietly mounts Deathless, seeing that the danger is done. She gives no farewell to her ally. She simply quickly departs without another word.

GAME: Carver removes the timestop.

Schara watches the second troll burning away, and seeing no more coming to investigate, The artificer finds the tree she was already at suitable to hold her weight. The whirring and noises from their armor die down, and Schara leans heavily against the tree. "No, tend to your... horse first. I have healing for myself, and you both likely saved my life." They answer, turning their head enough to catch the approaching caravan. "Or perhaps a cleric will work for that too."

Before they are able to consider anything further, turning back the ranger is already on their way, and the artificer is left to hitch a ride back with the lucht. It was a shame that their pack had been burnt to a crips by a troll falling over it, though.

Even now two arrows fired from crossbows from the Lucht are snapped off as wounds close, no pain or fear apparent. Only the taste for the hunt.

The troll's keening cry is a death knoll for many who travel through these highlands.

It had been a rather pleasant day, so far. Schara was just returning from one of the outlying townships around Alexandria, leaving enough time however to return before nightfall, in case of dangerous creatures out on the hunt.

What she was not expecting, or at least expecting much less, was for dangerous creatures to be out hunting already. The artificer is struck a bit confused down by the side of the road as she tries to make herself as small as possible with the wagon tearing down the road.

The momentary freeze was eventually broken by seeing what was coming. Even if they could escape, there was no guarantee that carriage would be able to outpace it, so she quickly dropped the pack she had been carrying, readying their arms, armor, armor arms and arms on arms for combat.

A second keening hunter's cry joins the first. Another troll barrels down from the hill on an intercept course, a young Lucht with pink hair pointing out yet another threat, begging their straining horses for more speed; more urgency. Anything to get them to safety. They rumble past Schara and despite their own danger, they call out a warning. Run!

A third cry, but different. It's more like an owl hooting, as from a nearby pond, someone astride a crimson horse races toward what is clearly becoming a flashpoint of blood and violence.

Carver's hair streams behind her, face covered in wild war paint. Astride Deathless she races into the fight, the Red Aldui's horseshoes glowing enchanted crimson as they cover ground at incredible speed. Avoiding the intercepting troll, she falls into pursuit behind the larger of the pair, arrows thunking into its thick hide with meaty splashes of blood.

If the troll is concerned by this, it isn't apparent, but it does stop its pursuit and roars at her in challenge. MORE MEAT!

The wagon bumps and rumbles pass the melee, the straw-hat wearing driver giving the heroic Schara a panicked glance. "Stay alive, we'll find help!" They sound sincere despite their fear, the ponies working in tandem to keep themselves out of the troll's rending claws. Where they could find help? That isn't quite as clear but mayhaps a passing patrol is nearby!

Against her better judgement, or perhaps from recalling a treatise she had read on troll regeneration in fields of medical science, Schara had decided to jump into action. "Get away from here, as quick as you can! I think I might be able to scare them off!" She shouted to the passerbies. It wasn't a particularly certain notion, but at the very least, one uncertain death was better than numerous near guaranteed.

The coils on their left arm, unfolded into a strange contraption of artifice, roared to life quite literally, as there was an explosion of flames from the weapon that engulfed much of the arm, and more of the troll chasing the carriage, burning it badly before it dissipated.

The troll's foul breath washes over Schara. The first, whose ugly mug shows unhealed acid wound splashed across its missing left eye, swipes at her with nails scratching shrilly off her armor. She feels first the flash of pain as a nail breaks off into a gap. The second troll is more successful, and even as fire begins to burn out across its great chest, they rake and rend and take a chunk of flesh from her shoulder. The teachers did not go into great detail about troll culture but they way their eyes gleam with excitement shows the whole truth. Elf flesh! Tasty treat for empty stomachs!

Carver digs her heels into Deathless's side, kicking them into advance to aid her unknown ally. More arrows punch and puncture, the first pair planting through the exposed side of Hungy's throat, the beast toppling over. Is it dead?

Angy growls as another barbed instrument plants into its thigh but does not break its stare with Schara. No fear. Even the fire only caused a brief hesitation.

"Shoot the downed one with fire! Now!" Carver yells at Schara, as the woman goes to get some distance. She can see blood flowing freely from the injured artificer, even as a familiar enchantment sends her limbic system into overdrive. Angy, arrow breaking off in its thigh as its regenerative physiology kicks in, swipes and claws but a rearing Deathless gives them just enough space to avoid the rending blows.

Schara watches, perhaps with horror, as Hungy's wounds begin to seal close and it rises on unsteady feet and begins to look around for more meat to taste.

Schara was not however expecting the second troll out from the side. Their armor was more made to ensure that they wouldn't be crippled by the weight, not as much for actual protection from claws and bludgeoning. At least the armor made them look less rough than they were as they tried to make some distance. Pulling a small bronze device out of a pouch, they flip one switch that causes it to emit a sharp jolt of lightning that jumps from the artificer to the hunter and her horse, which had the odd but familiar effect of speeding them up.

Carver unleashes another flurry of arrows, a veritably volley that stumbles the troll back a foot. Deathless flails their crimson hooves, but though they batter the troll, they do not seem to do any actual damage through its thick hide.

Angy leans in and BITES deep into Deathless, near the saddle. The pained whinny seems to drive Carver into a fury, her young face twisted into a mask of hate from her rage and warpaint. The troll pulls back, swallowing and wallowing with the taste of meat and blood.

With some modicum of space and slightly less threat of immediately being torn to shreds, the artificer is able to take aim at the fallen troll, coils in the arm heating red hot again, with another, less intense gout of flame that engulfs the Troll, but it does not go out like last time, instead leaving the beast a burning Pyre on the ground for some time.

Hungy's screams are no longer of the thrill of the hunt, but of raw terror. Fire consumes it, despite its flailing, burning bright in death; trolls do not have many predators but the heat of the artificer's coiled weapon might be one of them.

Carver should swap to her sidearm, but chooses not to. Instead, she feels the troll's claw as it rakes across her lead arm but does not yelp in the pain. Instead, she plants three arrows into the creature's face. As it falls, Deathless too begins to stomp upon its corpse. She dismounts already reaching for spark and tinder... but looks to Schara, and nods. Why bother? This woman has a fire cannon.

Schara moves to burn the other Troll as it falls, preparing to fire on it. But perhaps having a chunk of their shoulder missing caused problems, or perhaps it was just a reflex from the pain, but their arm jerked suddenly, and instead of burning the remaining Troll, a poor tree that was in the way past it catches alight. Thankfully the ground was damp from the nearby pond.

Angy's eyes suddenly pop open and its open maw lunges at Carver, who was standing above it. The ranger only dodges thanks to the increased reflex speed that Schara's spell granted her, stumbling back with a curse and reaching for her hatchet as the troll readies itself to attempt again.

Deathless bites the troll's arm, and the giantkin simply yanks it free, skin ripping off and healing just as quickly. Carver uses the distraction to slip to the side and draw her axe, but the hatchet simply does not have the power of her bow and only scars the thick hide and nothing more. "Shoot it again!"

There's a yelp of pain from the Artificer as they unceremoniously perform some percussive maitenance on their shoulderblade with their closed fist. But it seemed to have the desired effect, and their next shot hits true, setting the remaining troll ablaze.

Carver takes a calming breath when the troll falls over, burning quickly. It does not rise. She walks toward Schara, and nods, "I have some heal--" The rumble of a returning wagon distracts her, the Lucht returning over the hill. They have lit torches and reloaded crossbows, ready to help their saviors... but no longer needed. The straw-hat guide calls forward, "We have a cleric! Do you need healing?"

The ranger quietly mounts Deathless, seeing that the danger is done. She gives no farewell to her ally. She simply quickly departs without another word.

Schara watches the second troll burning away, and seeing no more coming to investigate, The artificer finds the tree she was already at suitable to hold her weight. The whirring and noises from their armor die down, and Schara leans heavily against the tree. "No, tend to your... horse first. I have healing for myself, and you both likely saved my life." They answer, turning their head enough to catch the approaching caravan. "Or perhaps a cleric will work for that too."

Before they are able to consider anything further, turning back the ranger is already on their way, and the artificer is left to hitch a ride back with the lucht. It was a shame that their pack had been burnt to a crips by a troll falling over it, though.

The warmth of the day has yet to dissipate as patrons gather within the Fernwood Pub. The clouds that are gathering in the sky are just a small threat to beat the heat, with no rain in sight. Aeson sits at a one of the darkened tables hiding under the balcony's above, a candle's glow being what illuminates his reading. A ale with a bit of froth sits before him, untouched as his bespectacled face wrinkles. A hand rises, a finger licked, and a page turned. The title is hard to read from a distance, but the tome looks old and worn. The only feature that it has is a drawing of a flexed arm upon it's cover.

This seems to be some sort of routine for the Temperance. His hand soon reaching blindly at his drink so he can take a swig. No attention is paid to the other patrons. Some of which seem to be gathering next to the stage as if there were to be a show.

The fernwood pub was a frequently, well, frequented space by all manner of people in the city. Which meant that it was not entirely surprising to find a small mottled makari closing the door behind her and putting a few things away into her satchel in the same moment.

Scanning the room for a moment, she sees at least one somewhat familiar face, and after a brief moment to decide scaring the people below was a bad idea, elects to take the stairs upwards. "Must be a good book if it's better than a cold drink at the end of the day." They point out.

"Greetings." Aeson says, his eyes pulling up from his book to peer at her from behind the pages. "It's... complicated." he finally says of her words, setting the book down open with the the words facing the table's top. With it set aside, he motions for the Makari to join him at the table. "Forgive the rudeness. I just do not know how you wish to be addressed." speaking of his simple acknowledgment.

"This is the Codex of the Armstrong." The Temperance states, his hands soon busy with taking off and cleaning his glasses with a kerchief he'd pulled from somewhere in his vest. "I was seeking past wisdoms, but find I am in conflict with the views of my kin. It's a reference. A family way of life... despite the family being near gone."

"Complicated, huh? Well, some people say anything worth doing isn't easy which is a load of bull but, there's at least a shred of truth in there, I'd say." The makari offers, stopping to take the chair, spin it around and lean over the back. "You weren't particularly rude anyways, Eztli, not really any other way to address me anyways, outside of nicknames.

"Your family has a book of how to act?" The makari wonders out loud. "Huh. Not the first time I've seen something like that, but why are you consulting it if you're in conflict?"

"I come from a line of heroes and adventurers. Once our name was well known, but our numbers dwindled with each danger the city faced." Aeson says, replacing his glasses and taking up his mug. "It was written by knights, warriors, and the holy. I do not follow the god of our house, nor am I a warrior by any means. So much in there speaks of expectations, our personal honor, and how to have a good death." he continues.

"While I agree with some of it. Not following Lady Serriel, and being more inclined to save than kill." Aeson's words lowering. "I only became an adventurer because my family is on hard times. My mother is beyond the age of helping, and my sister was one of the many whom were forced to retire from her career. She's now chair bound and blind." he notes. "So as the last male, taking care of them falls to me." a shrug given as he sips his brew. "I am trying to live as close to it as I can without compromising my own beliefs. It's a balance. One that takes meditation and thought."

"Well, that's, certainly something. And not my place to comment or pass judgement on, knowing so little about it." The makari admits, tapping the side of her chin as it rested just over the back of the chair. "That's an awful lot on your plate, at the very least. Were you not able to find work doing something safer? Or just not enough to take care of them?"

"The Illuminated Hand is a small clinic. It affords rent and bills, but that is not enough." Aeson says, sighing as he takes up the book and closes it. "I want to see some things restored, and my home to no be in ruins." his words somber. "I run the clinic, and I work as an adventurer on the side. It's not selfless as you might think. I feel that Navos is urging me down this path. Calling me towards things even if I don't know why. At times I think I am just a witness, but at other turns I feel I am a piece in some game of chess."

"The Oldest One does not speak directly to me. Aloof and quiet, but ever listening. I only am given hint and nudges to what he calls me to do. It's why I say I am not a proper Temperance. Often his calling of me can be interpreted in several ways. None of which makes my decisions easier. My life is full of tough choices. Always has been. But somewhere because of it. I exist now as I am. So I think I do well enough." his sigh reverberating as the book is tucked away. "What of you, Lady Eztli?" he asks, seeming to be done of talking of himself. There is clearly more, but now doesn't seem to be the time he wishes to speak of it.

Eztli did not have anything to drink for the time being, so she decides to wave down one of the servers. Otherwise, she was content to listen quietly for the time being. The makari pauses a moment, and sighs quietly. "Yeah, I can understand that. You've got a chance to fix thinngs, and if you don't do something about it, there might not be another chance to do so." They muse. "I suppose it might help to have some sort of guidance telling you you're going about it the right way."

"Just Eztli, please. I'm no noble or anything." They snort loudly. "And what about me? If you're asking about me, you'll have to be a bit more specific."

"This is the part I am not good at. Getting to know people." Aeson admits, some ruckus in the background signaling that this awaited performance the crowd had been waiting on might be soon to start. A glance is cast lazily towards the stage, no performers yet visible. "Tell me of yourself. Where you come from, and what you feel is important to what shaped you." he coaxes in a blunt manner. "I want to know what goes on behind your eyes. The thoughts and view that you uniquely hold." he somewhat clarifies.

"I am not too familiar with the Makari, nor their ways. I spent many years in schools and clinicals. I was not in a position to know your kind. Are you typical? Atypical? What is it you see yourself as?" Aeson's questions not specific, but seeking some answer to what rattles around in his head.

"Well, you're doing a decent job of it so far, since you've been pretty open with things about yourself." The makari reassures with a bit of a chuckle, and a rather abrupt leaving of her chair as she goes to meet one of the servers halfway to grab a large tankard that she carries back to her seat. A good excuse to leave and stretch for certain, with more than a modicum of awkwardness.

"I'm going to be honest, I appreciate it, but I'm really not certain how much I'm comfortable talking about, and it's on no fault of your own, just making that clear." Eztli sighs loudly. "I come from Dragonier if that means anything to you, and if it does, that should make sense as something that shaped me.

She pauses to take another drink, and perk up substantially. "Talking about makari though, that's a lot easier to answer. I would say I see myself as incredibly, horribly atypical." They laugh loudly. "Only person on par is Aelwyn and they're probably even more typical than me. I guess things aren't really in most of the medical books yet, are they? One of the obvious things is probably most being almost fifty percent taller than me. And most don't have wings, either."

"The lands are only known to me in text. Beautiful, and with masses of land in the sky. A fantasy in life." Aeson admits, grinning a Eztli laughs. "I know some of the biology, and can treat minor wounds, but as a surgeon? I would only be guessing." he admits.

"I will not ask you to share what you can, or will not." Aeson assures, having listened to Eztli's words. "I see no need to lie to you, nor conceal what it is I do. I see you know yourself enough to answer with honesty, even if it makes you uncomfortable. I award you a great amount of my respect." he muses. "As much as that might mean? Who's to say." a fondness in his tone as the business and blunt nature begins to finally show signs of cracking. "I enjoy listening to your views on yourself and your people. Tell me, what is your passion other than writing scripts, and inspecting dead bodies?"

"They were beautiful, fantastical, and while they could be flawed, I never would have wished what happened there on anyone." Eztli admits. "Not great to talk about, though, too depressing to talk about at a tavern on most occasions."

The makari stops, and takes another swig of her drink that was already concerningly empty. "Well, shit, you're going to make me feel bad saying things like that. So in the spirit of clearing that lie, yes, Lady is appropriate but I'd still rather just be called Eztli. Suppose I wasn't expecting that." She continues. "I'm not much of a scriptwriter, but I haven't really tried my hand at that. But a passion? I'd say that while I'm horribly out of practice, I still love dancing, ballet in particular."

Aeson laughs, a fist rising to cover his mouth. "Dancing? I thought... I clearly misunderstood." his amusement clear at his own mistake. "Eztli is what I will call you. Only if you call me either Aeson or Doc. I don't do titles myself."

"I don't feel you lied, it is more what others may perceive of you. You being called what wish is your perogative, and I will respect it." The Temperance notes with a nod as his hand drops to rest on the table. "I am glad you came by me this night. Usually I'd still be at the clinic, but today was remarkably light for work." his drink finished, a small elvish figure taking the stage with a lute and stool. It seems it's about time for the performance to start. A chord struck as the instrument's tune is checked. "I would like to see you dance sometime. Not now, that seems impolite. But, someday. Yes."

"Understood what?" The makari asks with one brow raised. "Thanks for understanding though, I appreciate it. I'll call you Aeson, until I actually need any wounds patched up. Makes more sense to me, after all."

"It's complicated, though, and I feel like it's a lie for various reasons. But thank you for understanding that, still." Eztli admits, smiling a bit again. "A light day at a clinic is a good thing, though I imagine it is a bit rough on the coin purse. I'm always happy to dance, though, but like I said, out of practice. That and, I wouldn't want to upstage the bard here, it's not what people came here to watch anyways, and it's good for their business and reputation. It's not easy being a professional performer. But what about you, Aeson? I've prattled on about myself, but what things are you up to outside of treating people and adventuring work?"

"It's all I have. My pursuit of healing is a vain attempt to heal my older sister, Eztli. If I can restore her, and she return to her trade, I could return to what it is I am after." Aeson states, his brow slightly furrowing. "I don't want to be the lead heir. I want to study, heal, and roam the world. I want to take in anything and everything. I want to learn... and never stop." he admits, his tone growing sheepish. He shifts uncomfortably, looking away towards the bard that begins to play, but his eyes go past her. "I'm extremely childish I think. I was seen as the one lacking. I was the slackjawed runt of my family"

"Well, if you ask me, and I don't know if you did, I'd say there are worse things to be vain about." The makari points out, returning to tapping one finger against her chin. "After all, if you didn't care, you would just, leave. Leave them behind and do what you wanted to do. But obviously you care about them, so that isn't an option."

"And sometimes things don't work out the way we want them to, but all you can do is make the best of it. Seems like you're doing a bang up job, even if it's not how you intended it to, huh? Most of those desires seem ticked off, outside of any heir or heiress things." She continues.

"You've got their support by the sounds of it then, and that goes a long way. A bit of teasing is a small price to pay if that's the case." Eztli chuckles. "You're a good person to take care of them like that. Seriously, it's a lot for anyone." The makari stops to stretch, and watch the performance that was being prepared. "I don't think anyone would fault you for taking a bit of time for yourself. You're not even taking time for yourself, but making what you do out of necessity better. More like, I don't know. Like you're only eating cake that's not your favorite flavor. It's still cake, isn't it and, I feel like my analogy is falling apart by the second."

Aeson laughs, not a subdued chuckle, but a full blown laugh. It's short, but was there. "It is more accurate than you know. Thank you, Eztli. I now know you better than perhaps anyone in this city outside my family."

The Temperance stands, a few coins placed upon the table after being fished from his jacket. Perhaps a tip. "I have to get home, but you are welcome by me any time. If you need me, I am at the Armstrong Manor or the Illuminated Hand. If not there, someone at either location will know how to reach me. Call on me. For anything." Aeson stresses the last few words. "It was a pleasure, Eztli. Daughter of Dragonier." dipping lightly with a short display of his arm. A half bow and sweep. And with that. He seems to be on his way. The music still plays.

The warmth of the day has yet to dissipate as patrons gather within the Fernwood Pub. The clouds that are gathering in the sky are just a small threat to beat the heat, with no rain in sight. Aeson sits at a one of the darkened tables hiding under the balcony's above, a candle's glow being what illuminates his reading. A ale with a bit of froth sits before him, untouched as his bespectacled face wrinkles. A hand rises, a finger licked, and a page turned. The title is hard to read from a distance, but the tome looks old and worn. The only feature that it has is a drawing of a flexed arm upon it's cover.

This seems to be some sort of routine for the Temperance. His hand soon reaching blindly at his drink so he can take a swig. No attention is paid to the other patrons. Some of which seem to be gathering next to the stage as if there were to be a show.

The fernwood pub was a frequently, well, frequented space by all manner of people in the city. Which meant that it was not entirely surprising to find a small mottled makari closing the door behind her and putting a few things away into her satchel in the same moment.

Scanning the room for a moment, she sees at least one somewhat familiar face, and after a brief moment to decide scaring the people below was a bad idea, elects to take the stairs upwards. "Must be a good book if it's better than a cold drink at the end of the day." They point out.

"Greetings." Aeson says, his eyes pulling up from his book to peer at her from behind the pages. "It's... complicated." he finally says of her words, setting the book down open with the the words facing the table's top. With it set aside, he motions for the Makari to join him at the table. "Forgive the rudeness. I just do not know how you wish to be addressed." speaking of his simple acknowledgment.

"This is the Codex of the Armstrong." The Temperance states, his hands soon busy with taking off and cleaning his glasses with a kerchief he'd pulled from somewhere in his vest. "I was seeking past wisdoms, but find I am in conflict with the views of my kin. It's a reference. A family way of life... despite the family being near gone."

"Complicated, huh? Well, some people say anything worth doing isn't easy which is a load of bull but, there's at least a shred of truth in there, I'd say." The makari offers, stopping to take the chair, spin it around and lean over the back. "You weren't particularly rude anyways, Eztli, not really any other way to address me anyways, outside of nicknames.

"Your family has a book of how to act?" The makari wonders out loud. "Huh. Not the first time I've seen something like that, but why are you consulting it if you're in conflict?"

"I come from a line of heroes and adventurers. Once our name was well known, but our numbers dwindled with each danger the city faced." Aeson says, replacing his glasses and taking up his mug. "It was written by knights, warriors, and the holy. I do not follow the god of our house, nor am I a warrior by any means. So much in there speaks of expectations, our personal honor, and how to have a good death." he continues.

"While I agree with some of it. Not following Lady Serriel, and being more inclined to save than kill." Aeson's words lowering. "I only became an adventurer because my family is on hard times. My mother is beyond the age of helping, and my sister was one of the many whom were forced to retire from her career. She's now chair bound and blind." he notes. "So as the last male, taking care of them falls to me." a shrug given as he sips his brew. "I am trying to live as close to it as I can without compromising my own beliefs. It's a balance. One that takes meditation and thought."

"Well, that's, certainly something. And not my place to comment or pass judgement on, knowing so little about it." The makari admits, tapping the side of her chin as it rested just over the back of the chair. "That's an awful lot on your plate, at the very least. Were you not able to find work doing something safer? Or just not enough to take care of them?"

"The Illuminated Hand is a small clinic. It affords rent and bills, but that is not enough." Aeson says, sighing as he takes up the book and closes it. "I want to see some things restored, and my home to no be in ruins." his words somber. "I run the clinic, and I work as an adventurer on the side. It's not selfless as you might think. I feel that Navos is urging me down this path. Calling me towards things even if I don't know why. At times I think I am just a witness, but at other turns I feel I am a piece in some game of chess."

"The Oldest One does not speak directly to me. Aloof and quiet, but ever listening. I only am given hint and nudges to what he calls me to do. It's why I say I am not a proper Temperance. Often his calling of me can be interpreted in several ways. None of which makes my decisions easier. My life is full of tough choices. Always has been. But somewhere because of it. I exist now as I am. So I think I do well enough." his sigh reverberating as the book is tucked away. "What of you, Lady Eztli?" he asks, seeming to be done of talking of himself. There is clearly more, but now doesn't seem to be the time he wishes to speak of it.

Eztli did not have anything to drink for the time being, so she decides to wave down one of the servers. Otherwise, she was content to listen quietly for the time being. The makari pauses a moment, and sighs quietly. "Yeah, I can understand that. You've got a chance to fix thinngs, and if you don't do something about it, there might not be another chance to do so." They muse. "I suppose it might help to have some sort of guidance telling you you're going about it the right way."

"Just Eztli, please. I'm no noble or anything." They snort loudly. "And what about me? If you're asking about me, you'll have to be a bit more specific."

"This is the part I am not good at. Getting to know people." Aeson admits, some ruckus in the background signaling that this awaited performance the crowd had been waiting on might be soon to start. A glance is cast lazily towards the stage, no performers yet visible. "Tell me of yourself. Where you come from, and what you feel is important to what shaped you." he coaxes in a blunt manner. "I want to know what foes on behind your eyes. The thoughts and view that you uniquely hold." he somewhat clarifies.

"I am not too familiar with the Makari, nor their ways. I spent many years in schools and clinicals. I was not in a position to know your kind. Are you typical? Atypical? What is it you see yourself as?" Aeson's questions not specific, but seeking some answer to what rattles around in his head.

"Well, you're doing a decent job of it so far, since you've been pretty open with things about yourself." The makari reassures with a bit of a chuckle, and a rather abrupt leaving of her chair as she goes to meet one of the servers halfway to grab a large tankard that she carries back to her seat. A good excuse to leave and stretch for certain, with more than a modicum of awkwardness.

"I'm going to be honest, I appreciate it, but I'm really not certain how much I'm comfortable talking about, and it's on no fault of your own, just making that clear." Eztli sighs loudly. "I come from Dragonier if that means anything to you, and if it does, that should make sense as something that shaped me.

She pauses to take another drink, and perk up substantially. "Talking about makari though, that's a lot easier to answer. I would say I see myself as incredibly, horribly atypical." They laugh loudly. "Only person on par is Aelwyn and they're probably even more typical than me. I guess things aren't really in most of the medical books yet, are they? One of the obvious things is probably most being almost fifty percent taller than me. And most don't have wings, either."

"The lands are only known to me in text. Beautiful, and with masses of land in the sky. A fantasy in life." Aeson admits, grinning a Eztli laughs. "I know some of the biology, and can treat minor wounds, but as a surgeon? I would only be guessing." he admits.

"I will not ask you to share what you can, or will not." Aeson assures, having listened to Eztli's words. "I see no need to lie to you, nor conceal what it is I do. I see you know yourself enough to answer with honesty, even if it makes you uncomfortable. I award you a great amount of my respect." he muses. "As much as that might mean? Who's to say." a fondness in his tone as the business and blunt nature begins to finally show signs of cracking. "I enjoy listening to your views on yourself and your people. Tell me, what is your passion other than writing scripts, and inspecting dead bodies?"

"They were beautiful, fantastical, and while they could be flawed, I never would have wished what happened there on anyone." Eztli admits. "Not great to talk about, though, too depressing to talk about at a tavern on most occasions."

The makari stops, and takes another swig of her drink that was already concerningly empty. "Well, shit, you're going to make me feel bad saying things like that. So in the spirit of clearing that lie, yes, Lady is appropriate but I'd still rather just be called Eztli. Suppose I wasn't expecting that." She continues. "I'm not much of a scriptwriter, but I haven't really tried my hand at that. But a passion? I'd say that while I'm horribly out of practice, I still love dancing, ballet in particular."

Aeson laughs, a fist rising to cover his mouth. "Dancing? I thought... I clearly misunderstood." his amusement clear at his own mistake. "Eztli is what I will call you. Only if you call me either Aeson or Doc. I don't do titles myself."

"I don't feel you lied, it is more what others may perceive of you. You being called what wish is your perogative, and I will respect it." The Temperance notes with a nod as his hand drops to rest on the table. "I am glad you came by me this night. Usually I'd still be at the clinic, but today was remarkably light for work." his drink finished, a small elvish figure taking the stage with a lute and stool. It seems it's about time for the performance to start. A chord struck as the instrument's tune is checked. "I would like to see you dance sometime. Not now, that seems impolite. But, someday. Yes."

"Understood what?" The makari asks with one brow raised. "Thanks for understanding though, I appreciate it. I'll call you Aeson, until I actually need any wounds patched up. Makes more sense to me, after all."

"It's complicated, though, and I feel like it's a lie for various reasons. But thank you for understanding that, still." Eztli admits, smiling a bit again. "A light day at a clinic is a good thing, though I imagine it is a bit rough on the coin purse. I'm always happy to dance, though, but like I said, out of practice. That and, I wouldn't want to upstage the bard here, it's not what people came here to watch anyways, and it's good for their business and reputation. It's not easy being a professional performer. But what about you, Aeson? I've prattled on about myself, but what things are you up to outside of treating people and adventuring work?"

"It's all I have. My pursuit of healing is a vain attempt to heal my older sister, Eztli. If I can restore her, and she return to her trade, I could return to what it is I am after." Aeson states, his brow slightly furrowing. "I don't want to be the lead heir. I want to study, heal, and roam the world. I want to take in anything and everything. I want to learn... and never stop." he admits, his tone growing sheepish. He shifts uncomfortably, looking away towards the bard that begins to play, but his eyes go past her. "I'm extremely childish I think. I was seen as the one lacking. I was the slackjawed runt of my family"

"Well, if you ask me, and I don't know if you did, I'd say there are worse things to be vain about." The makari points out, returning to tapping one finger against her chin. "After all, if you didn't care, you would just, leave. Leave them behind and do what you wanted to do. But obviously you care about them, so that isn't an option."

"And sometimes things don't work out the way we want them to, but all you can do is make the best of it. Seems like you're doing a bang up job, even if it's not how you intended it to, huh? Most of those desires seem ticked off, outside of any heir or heiress things." She continues.

*Summary: While it seemed the giant worm creature the last party discovered in the mines of the fortress was adequately contained by the magma moat at its depths, recent tremors have given rise to concern with the archaeologists still cataloguing the ruins. A party of seasoned adventurers are requested to track the creature to its lair at the deepest reaches of the fortress, and slay the beast.</div>

The party have scant minutes to catch their breath and lick their wounds after dispatching the last of the young worms. Even as they do, the distant rumbling grows and grows. A prickling of the soles of the feet that becomes a hum, growing in timbre and volume until it begins to shake dust from the cave ceiling and rattle pebbles on the ground. One almost expects the worm to come crashing through a nearby wall at any moment, but the noise fails to reach its explosive crescendo- and instead begins to fade again, changing in tone slightly as the worm recedes through the earth.

Only for the sound to begin swelling once again after a few moments. The repetition causes the hair to stand on end on the backs of ones neck, or whatever the scaled equivalent is for two of the party members. It instils a feeling of being circled by vultures. Vultures large enough to swallow a carriage and its horses in one gulp.

"Okay, something big is coming. It seems we made the parent - or parents - angry." Harkashan rumbles, as he shifts his feet and gets into a broader stance. "Parent." He then adds, after sniffing at the air. "Circling us. Let's see if we can find a wider area to deal with it. Because we're at a disadvantage in these narrow halls." He remarks to Rune and Eztli.

He then draws a quick spell over Rune, in order to further protect her. "Let's move."

Eztli flinches, looking around the tunnel, which doesn't really help at all in this situation. "Guess they're still around too. I like that Idea, maybe back to where we fell down? I could get us all back up the tunnel in a hurry if we need to, unless there's a bigger clearing somewhere else."

"I'm good with that idea." Harkashan answers Eztli, stepping back towards her and moving to her sid.

The sound of something larger rumbling in the distance is enough to have Rune cursing under her breath. "Knew it couldn't be that easy." She stows one sword and takes out a wand, muttering an activation word before a shadowy effect takes hold around her, making her form look as if it were protected by a veil of smoke. "Whatever you need to do to get ready, now is the time." She tucks the wand away and pulls her sword back out.

Rune's ears twitch, and her posture suggests she's ready to dart if she feels like the worm(s) might come up from underneath her. At the idea of moving back a bit, she gives a quick nod. "Let's move, then."

The Worm continues to circle the group as they retrace their steps- drawing near and then receeding again. Until suddenly a loud crash thunders through the cavern- it seems to be coming from above them, back on the 'surface' level of this deep underground chasm.

"We need to go, now. Better to head it off up there than let it tear up the foundation looking for us." Eztli growls, positioning herself in between the three of them. One hand is placed on Hark, another on Rune, and the sorceress hisses something in Draconic, before the ground erupts in flames, converging in a circle beneath them that the three drop through, depositing them a few feet above the ground in the upper cavern where they drop safely down.

Safely for the teleport, at least. What may be up there already certainly wasn't safe in the slightest.

No sooner have they arrived upon the surface than a terrible bellowing roar shakes them to their very core. Rearing up, halfway emerged from the stone at the shore of the lava lake is the worm- massive beyond their wildest fears, maw- which splits like an insect's mandibles halfway through its chin- is easily fifteen feet across, and lined with row upon row upon row of inward facing, undulating needle-like teeth. It has no visible eyes, and its purple carapace is scarred and ancient. It's saliva drips in thick globs which spatter the ground, and where it lands the stone begins to bubble and smoke and dissolve.

With the spell depositing them where it did, Eztli is at least given some time to react to, a much, much larger threat than the young worms they had seen earlier. "Glad we got rid of the others before they became this." Eztli growls, conjuring a bead of fire in one hand as they dart away from the tunnel and edge of the lava, hurling the bead in the direction of the worm, where it explodes into a torrent of fire over the creature. "Might be able to drop the gate on it, but I'm not sure if even that would kill something this size."

As they appear on the surface, Harkashan remarks "That's some heavy acid that thing is using. And I haven't prepared anything to deal with that kind of element." He warns the others.

"I'll try to set us up for success with my magics. Divine celerity is on its way. Eztli, Rune. I'm counting on you. We've got this." He tries to cheer up the others two, before a pulse of light ripples out from him, touching his allies as he moves forward with purpose and begins a dirge once more. This one, singing to the end of this ancient beast.

Rune's eyes pan upwards, following the sound within the earth around them. "Where the fuck is it going?" She asks, having assumed that it would try to deal with whomever had become a threat to the brood. However, that doesn't seem to be the case. "Above us?" Then, with the touch of the sorceress on her arm, she blinks as they emerge on the upper level.

Looking across, she spots the massive creature and the sweat that forms on her brow is both from the heat, and from the obvious danger. "Fuck that thing is huge." She moves a bit closer, trying to get into a better position, but there's still a lot of distance between herself and the worm.

The fireball explodes against the worms flesh and it reals back, head crashing into the cavern wall and breaking loose several large stones which tumble to the ground with a series of crashes before splashing into the lake of magma.

The worm lunges forwards, rearing up and then diving through the air, landing face first against the ground and burrowing into it. It's body forms a coil emerging from one hole and plunging into another for several long seconds as segment after segment of the worm's enormous mass appears and then dissapears once more from view.

"Yeah, you aren't kidding, I know the small ones burned, but this thing has way more goop to burn with." The small makari grumbled. The sorceress flapped their wings a few times to leap off the ground, gliding over to where Rune had moved to. "Burn away this beast's attacks!" <draconic> the makari hisses, reaching to pat Rune on the head, where the rogue now felt almost uncomfortably hot. Still, it was better for the ward to burn away the worst of the acid before it hit her skin, than let the saliva do much worse.

Harkashan is quick to touch his chest and let out a roar, as the massive creature dives beneath the earth. Ashen light springs up from him, as a set of wings burst up from his back. Strange feather-scaled wings that spread out in a protective manner. "We'll have to learn its tactics on the fly. Telling by the markings on that thing, it has experience fighting other beings. So let's assume it's at least somewhat intelligent in its tactics." He calls out.

The fact that the worm seems to have quite powerful acid isn't lost on Rune. "One of my weapons is enchanted with an acid effect. That one might not be as useful in this fight, but I don't really have another option." Thankfully, the enchantment is relatively weak and shouldn't work against them too terribly. At least, so she hopes.

With a nod of appreciation to Eztli, Rune moves away from her yet again, "Try to spread out, so that it doesn't catch us all." She braces herself, readying to attack if the creature emerges.

THe massive worm bursts out of the ground pretty much directly beneath Rune's feet- she's ready for it, but even being ready for it its massive maw practically envelopes her. Its teeth latch on, thousands of two inch daggers biting into her from all sides and trying to drag her down towards the creature's gullet. Harkashan's magic thwarts the creatures barbed throat, though, and it looses its grip on Rune quickly- spilling her bloodied but intact onto the ground as it rears out of the earth.

"Rune, you okay?" Eztli attempts to shout over the sheer din made just by this beast moving around. "BURN TO ASH AND NEVER THREATEN THIS PLACE AGAIN!" The sorceress roars, conjuring a trio of flaming spears that streat towards the worm, impacting it hard and searing the armored plates of the beast badly.

"Alright! The magic is working." Harkashan calls out. "Rune, how are you holding up?" Knowing that at this point, between the various magics, she's probably doing better than she might have been months ago. His wings shift, as a dark aura of death envelops his hand for a moment, before he pushes off!

His wings carry him, flapping rapidly. Leaving behind a sweeping array of red embers. Avoiding its stinger by cleanly maneuvering, letting it come into its Archon's Aura before calling out to the Deathsinger with a quick prayer.

Landing behind it, positioning itself with Rune, he then reaches out. "YOU SHALL NOT HARM MY ALLIES! FEEL YOUR WEAKNESS BEFORE MY SONG!" As his darkened hand reaches out. Touching against its jagged body, and Cursing the beast with one of his strongest combat curses yet!

Fear spikes in Rune's system as the creature emerges from beneath her, taking out the ground and nearly swollowing her whole. Between Harkashan's spell and the equipment she wears which makes her less than tasty, the rogue ends up escaping being swallowed and falls to the ground in a pile of spittle and blood. "Ow..." She mutters as she gets to her feet, hands still white-knuckling her blades.

"I'm fine. Just a little... chewed on." Rune mutters to herself. She looks over her shoulder, giving a nod to Harkashan, waiting for him to get into position before she uses the distraction to her advantage. With the creature focusing on him, she makes for it.

What follows is a quick series of blows that seems to hit at a number of places along the creature's spine. Places which seem to be calculated in order to do the most damage and weaken the worm in the process.

The creature rears in agony at the rapid blows from Rune, writhing and flailing as the thick pale green ichor that it has in lieu of blood erupts in great gushes. The creature topples sideways- still only halfway extended from the ground, with an allmighty crash as it slams into and through the walls over the gatehouse in its death throes.

It seems, for all its bellowing and it's massive size, it was no match for Rune's deadly blades.

Harkashan blinks wildly as the creature roars. Rune's strikes are so fast, he has trouble following them. He knows his magics are fast, but with the shadows interfering with even seeing Rune, as well as its massive size... all he knows is that within just a few moments, the massive creature falls.

"..."

He doesn't know what to say. Just kind of slackjawed, staring at what Rune just wrought.

Before idly noting, as the other two adjust their positions; "It's not quite dead yet. It's just... unconscious."

Eztli couldn't help but blink as the worm was summarily cut down by Rune. "That was, impressive, wait, shit!" The sorceress cuts herself off, cursing as the worm smashes the bottom of the gatehouse on its way down. The small makari waves one hand, causing a flash of light as flames flicker over the bottom of the roof. They vanish, but the stone doesn't seem to be crumbling down further, at least for the time being. "We need to let the stoneshapers know. I can keep this up for, maybe 5 minutes?"

For a few perciosu seconds, Rune stands there as if she were a little shocked at just how well her series of attacks had worked. Over time, she has become better and better at picking out vital points which serve as targets for her attacks. "That... that was intense."

Stepping back, the rogue listens, as if she were keeping an ear out for any additional worms that might be seeking to follow up on the attack. "I don't... hear any others. It's... possible the mate isn't here anymore." Where it might be, is another question entirely.

Rune looks a little sheepish as she wipes the blood and spittle off of herself, not realizing that the creature may just be about to awaken.

Even as Rune begins to step away from the creature and listen out for any more incoming threats, its tail suddenly lashes out towards her- but she is not so easily caught off guard and the heavy blow slams into the ground, kicking up dirt and gravel like an explosion but failing to strike the nimble rogue.

It turns out the beast still wasn't dead, and Eztli flinches. With a few flaps of their wings, the makari dives to the other side of the cavern, stopping as they skid across the ground a few feet. "Burn and stay down!" The sorceress growls, hurling another bead of flame where she came from, which explodes into another ball of flames, which finally cease the beasts movements.

GAME: Culix removes the timestop.

Timestop by Culix has left.

As it finally does fall fully, Harkashan confirms it is indeed down. "Stay here. I will get the Stoneshapers. With my wings, I'm likely going to be fastest up those stairs!" He calls out, before his wings leave a heavy gust of wind, and he goes retrieve them.

Rune gives a yelp of surprise sa the creature lashes out at her, darting back just out of range of the roiling body as she stumbles backwards, neatly landing on her rear to stare at the worm. A moment later, it becomes a barbeque at the hands of Eztli, which only adds to the heat.

Sweating and pushing herself to her feet, the rogue tries to shake off the momentary shock. She moves to wipe her brow, but it just smears drool and blood across her forehead and spikes her hair up unnaturally. "Thanks for the save."

With Harkashan calling for them to stay put, Rune does so with a nod, turning her attention out towards the darkness. "I'll... keep an ear out." Because her vision sucks down in these caves.

Harkashan makes it back up to the mineshaft where the stoneshapers were stationed. There's a brand new passageway that wasn't there on their way down- it's edges dripping with semi-dissolved rock and thick, viscous acid. On the other side of it, one of the dwarven Earthshapers is pale faced and shell-shocked, sitting just a couple of feet from the edge of the worm hole.

Harkashan stares at the new passageway, then back to the Earthshapers. "Everyone, you can be calm now. We took care of the Purple worm. But we need your help down below at haste. There's a structural integrity breach." He remarks, motioning downstairs. Pause...

Frown.

"Are you all okay?"

"It... got Druggni and Azzilin..." the Shaper says, shakily. "I- we were... talking, and it just..." he makes a vague gesture, swiping his hand from one edge to the other. "Swallowed them up. Didn't even slow down. Don't think it even noticed us, or didn't care anyway."

Harkashan frowns. "I can ask Rune to see if she can cut them out in time. But with the kind of acid that creature holds..." He bows his head down. "If you will permit it, I can execute any death rites you may favor." He adds. Realizing that there is little chance they would have survived. "My deepest condolences for your loss. It was a grave and vile beast of great strength. With a whole brood down below we had to eliminate first."

A few hundred feet below, where the others still stand near the corpse near the gatehouse, there is a muffled thumping noise that catches Rune's attention. It's coming from the worm. It's skin is pulsing and flexing- is it waking up again?

"I should be the one thanking you for saving, well, all of us." Eztli shrugs. "Seriously, it would have gone a lot differently if not for you."

The small makari takes a glance at the worm, and her eyes squint. "I hope that worm didn't have more young, Rune. Your call on this one."

With little way of knowing the conversation going on above, Rune's brow furrows at the sight of movement inside the worm. She looks over towards the smaller Makari, "Not sure what we've got here, but... be ready."

She gives a little wave, "Just doing my job. Killing shit is about all I'm good at, but I'm glad I could keep it from doing more damage."

Despite the risk, Rune moves to cut into the flesh of the creature, aiming nearby the movement so she can get an idea of what it - friend or more foes.

The shocked Stoneworker nods his head once then, and pulls himself to his feet. Setting his jaw in grim determination he says, "You slew it, then? That's good." he grunts, and carefully crosses the acid-spattered cavern to follow Harkashan down to the depths where he can assist with stabilizing the structure.

Meanwhile, as Rune approaches the pulsing patch of flesh and begins cutting, suddenly a stony hand springs out of the flesh- still soaked in ichor and digestive juices. The stone is pitted and smoking, but definitely a hand- a stout, dwarven hand, gripping hard around RUne's wrist- it stings, but the acid seems to be rapidly losing its potency with the creature dead.

Rune lets out a surprised sound, and then quickly reacts to grab onto the hand gripping her wrist. "Unless worms have grown hands, I think we've got a survivor." She calls out to Eztli. "Help me pull!" She calls, trying to help get the owner of the hand free from the creature.

Harkashan puts a hand on the Stoneworker's shoulder as he speaks. His head down. Rather unaware of the survivors within the worm being pulled out by Rune right that moment. "We did. It was hard-fought. It seems like it had a mate, but it left for a different region entirely. We didn't find any other creatures. But we did spot signs of the various struggles this Fortress stood against throughout the ages. So it may be wise to get some scouts stationed down there, in case you get any other... 'interested creatures' showing up. Now that the Purple Worm no longer has this territory claimed."

It takes some effort, with Rune and Eztli hauling, but eventually something begins to give in the fallen creature's insides. The small wound opens up and spills thick coils of foul smelling offal as well as a pair of dwarven figures, one of them is immobile, stone, and partially dissolved. The other is still mobile, and stone skinned, but completely butt naked- any gear they had been wearing or carrying clearly hasn't survived its encounter with the worm's digestive tract. All of them, the statue, the stones fleshed nudist, Eztli and Rune collapse into a pile of spilled worm guts.

"Mate? Oh, they don't mate. Or maybe they do, not sure, but every purple worm is born ready to lay eggs." He says to Harkashan as they head back towards the stairs.

"I see. I did not know that. Most interesting." Harkashan remarks back to the Stoneshaper. And when they finally make it down the stairs, they are soon approaching the fallen body of the worm. Where he sees Eztli and Rune frantically working on something. "Oh! Did the two survive after all?" He goes into a bit of a quicker pace at seeing this.

Eztli helps pull the people out, one hand ready on a potion they were carrying, just in case it was needed immediately. Which meant that they didn't have the most stable grip, and the worm guts didn't help. "Damned thing might be even more unpleasant dead." Eztli grumbles, regaining her composure quickly. "Hark! One of them is alive, but badly injured, and, not sure about the other. We need your help!" She shouts over to the gatehouse.

This is not the first time, nor the last, that Rune ends up covered in monster guts. However, she does look suitably displeased at her current situation. The rogue lifts her arms, and then splats them back down again onto the ground. "It's going to take weeks to get this stench out of my armor..."

She looks over at those that are pulled out, one looking like a statue and the other... all kinds of naked. Thankfully, Harkashan arrives and she looks away, scrambling to her feet, still dripping monster bile. "Can you help them? I'm afraid I don't know much about ... this effect."

The stoneskinned one coughs and heaves and gasps for air after clearing his lungs of worm goop, and then grumbles, "Aye she's still alive. Probably." looking back towards the statue of a female dwarf. He grumbles, before rolling over and collapsing onto his back.

With the one healthy stoneshaper, the collapsed wall is shored up at least temporarily with a mound of stone and earth to support the gatehouse. The nudist manages to procure a cloak from someone before the stoneskin wears off, thankfully- meanwhile the statue is fairly damaged and so the stoneshapers insist they'll carry her back to the surface and do what they can to restore her before she's returned to flesh. Right now the statue is pockmarked and missing ears and fingertips and other extremities.

Harkashan is quick to run up to them. "Where's the second..." And there is the statue. Harkashan draws her back up and notes; "I have the ability to regenerate limbs and other bodyparts if anything goes wrong, so I can certainly help with that." He notes, and will join upstairs to assist on the healing. "I'm just glad I do not have to do any Deathrites today."

Eztli maintains the wall of force until the wall is shored up enough, and she hesitates for a moment as the barrier falls, until she sees that the stone isn't shifting anymore. "I'm glad to. Any job like this where everyone gets out alive is a good one. Let's get them all out of here though, back to a safer spot. We'll regroup there. And see about getting a half decent bath."

Though there is at least one confirmed survivor, Rune has a look of worry for the statue. The fact that the other stoneshapers don't seem worried should set her mind at ease, but she doesn't like to see collateral damage to fights like these. It leads to questions about how things could have been done differently to avoid such things.

Eztli's words catch her attention, though. "Yes. A bath, definitely. As soon as possible." She flaps her arms once, making a splattering sound as worm goo still drips from her clothing.
